    - String Parameter Maximum Length I have a simple report, it has one parameter(string type) that the user types in named description. They type their description in the parameter box, then click view report and the description is in a textbox on the report. The problem is when the description is over 2000 characters long it does not work when the report is deployed to the webserver. But it works fine in the development preview window.     - Adventureworks sample report problem Every time I go to preview the sample reports (within Visual Studio) that come with Reporting Services (AdventureWorks), I get the error message below. I have built a simple report from scratch and uploaded it to the report server and it was OK. I only get the error with the sample reports. Anyone have a fix for this.I can't figure it out.     - Login failed I'm having trouble getting my report to run on the reporting services server. I can run it fine from my machine, but when I deploy it, I get a Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection. I've set the datasource to use a shared datasource, with a specific username and password(which is the username and password for the reporting services server, going after an external sql server with permissions to the reporting services user.     - Test multi-value parameter for <select all> in rs2005 Is there a way to test whether a user chose the <select all> option from a multi-value user parameter prompt? I would like to evaluate what the user selected in order to display what the user selected but not print out every entry in the selection list if the user chose the <select all>. I've used the parameters!Myparam.Count as a work around where I use an expression like iif(parameters!myparam.count < 10, true, false). The 10 is some arbitrary number I've chosen.     - Rendering error in RS SP2? I am installing reporting services on a Windows 2003, SP 1 box and SQL Server, SP4. If I install RS, or RS SP1, I can view the sample reports without a problem. If I install RS SP2, I can not view the reports. I get the following error: Could not load the type Microsoft.ReportingServices.Interfaces.IRenderStream. I have been searching everywhere for a resolution to this problem. At this point I am re-installing RS but not SP2 so I can proceed with some development. Has anyone else experienced this problem?     - Custom Data Extension - Query String Hi, --Question I have a created a custom data extension and I want to populate the query string with some default text, how can I do this? I've initialised the command text property to my desired default but it always shows an empty string in the designer? I've included the background as to why I want to do this below. Any help would be much appreciated --Background info I have created a custom data extension which works just fine when I hard code the 3 parameters required. These parameters are actually instruction for my DAL to work with so they are essential to know up front, rather than typical parameters that would be passed to a SP to filter data. My parameters are XmlConfigFile and DataProviderID, my DAL then creates an object using info from the config file for the specified DataProviderID. Since these params are essential to return any data I want them to be passed via the query string, I also want the default query string to have them populated with empty strings e.g. @XmlConfigFile='' ; @DataProviderId='' This way the report designer just needs to add the values an not remember the parameter names.     - mdx question Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me with a bit of mdx. We want to display something like this: Year + Month Company Num of Cases Num of Cases that haven't been paid We want to show the number of cases for a company that were created in certain year/month time slices but we also want to show the number of cases that haven't been paid. We find if the the case has not been paid or not from child table so we have following situation: Fact Table: Case - Measure is id (Count) Dimension Tables: Case Company - Level is name Case - level is created date Case further details - paid date We have tried many possibilities but can't seem to get the number of cases for when the paid date is empty. I suppose our best try is: Count( Filter( CrossJoin([Measures].members, [PaidDate].Members), not IsEmpty([PaidDate].CurrentMember ) ) ) but this gives the wrong value.     - Secure access of in Reports in ASP.NET Hi, My requirement is that I want users to be able to view a parameterised report without exposing a query string that can be tampered with. Users of our application are only allowed to view one particular report and none other than the one they have permission to. I want to expose some kind of button on an ASP.NET website that will display a pop-up window of the Reporting Service screen without the toolbar, without displaying the URL and without displaying the parameter input list.     - AJAX Renderer I'm in the process of writing a new renderer for Reporting Services to get around some of the problems it's main HTML renderer has - fixed headers, screen flash, losing scroll position on refresh, customisable refresh rate etc. Although it's been fun trying to do this with almost no documentation at all, the project is almost at an end. However, there is one last thing I'd like to implement to make life a little more efficient. That is to only send the changes to the client once the original page has been rendered. Something like Gmail does with it's JavaScript arrays. My request is for ideas on how I can create diffs from within the renderer. Do I need to cache the entire report object model until the next update request or is there some easy field in the model to say "it's changed"? Does anyone have any other ideas about how I might do this? What is the best way of identifying an individual client from within the renderer (my only current idea is to generate a guid or similar and embed that in the initial rendering)? You should be able to do this by creating a custom stylesheet for these reports. By default, these are located in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Reporting Services\ReportServer\styles. Create a copy of htmlviewer.css, (i.e. noexport.css), and change the .ToolbarExport display from "inline" to "none.     - How to Connect to an Access Database!! Hello, After struggling with the errors encountered by many users on this board, I think I have finally figured out how to make a successful connection between MS Reporting Services on one server and an Access file stored on a shared drive elsewhere in the network domain. Here is our setup: Server A: SQL Server and MS Reporting Services installed Server B: Another server on the network Client: Any desktop computer Both servers are located within the same domain and access is controlled by Windows NT integrated security. The data source for the report had to be built using a DSNless ODBC connection string. For example: "Driver={Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)};Dbq=\\ServerB\SharedDirectory\SomeDatabase.mdb" So far this has worked both in a shared data source and for a data source built into the report. The Access database is using the default Admin userid with blank password. Once the data source and report were deployed I went into the Properties screen for the shared data source (or report custom data source) and selected the "Credentials stored securely in the report server" option. After that I provided a username and password (my own for testing) that has access to the shared files server. Finally I had to select "Use as Windows credentials when connecting to the data source". (Be sure to click the apply button ;-) After that setup the report worked wonderfully! It makes sense now that I think about it, but it is confusing at first. To have access to the mdb file on ServerB, Reporting Services has to be able to provide valid user credentials. Without proper credentials, the report server will be denied to the shared files just as a user would if they provided the wrong password. If the Access database required a password, that would have to be provided separately by the connection string and not by Reporting Services directly. I don't know what service packs are on ServerB or even if that makes a difference. Hopefully this information will help save some of you out there a few grey hairs. No guarantees that it will work on every server/domain setup, but at least it can be done! Anyone else have some insights to share on this? Since these are blocked from the public internet none of my users can see images.     - RE: Passing complex parameters Deepak- "Failed to execute web request" can be due to several issues. I would suggest starting with a simple xml document on a virtual directory and working up from there. Things to check when working with a web service as a data source: (1) Permissions (The data provider is probably using integrated security) (2) Element Path in the XML query (this depends on the structure of the xml returned by the web service) (3) Encoding (RS web services Base64 encode responses, you will need to specify the proper decoding in the ElementPath in the query) (4) Set IgnoreNamespaces="true" in the query Hope this helps.     - How to change location of log files Hey all, Can somebody please give me some guidance on how to change the location of the LogFiles after the server has been working for quite some time? We have the RSS running everything from C:\ and we're running out of space there, primarily because of the RS logs. Where would I change this so that the files could go to somewhere else on my server that has plenty of space? Further, are there any other logs or other constantly growing file that I might also want to relocate?     - Upgrade to ctp sept fails with wrong version error I tried upgrading SQL Server 2000 RS Dev to 2005. After setup when I got to RS Configuration Manager Initialization marked as not configured. When I click on Initialization I get this error. "The version of the Report Server database is either in a format that is not valid or cannot be read. The found version is C.0.8.38. Expected version C.0.8.39. To continue upgrade version.." I tried upgrading the database on the Database Setup Panel but the version does not change to C.0.8.39. Does anyone know who to fix this? Thank you. The setup for RS fails with this error. "Cannot find object "dbo.PersistedStream" because it does not exist or you do not have permissions..." However when I go into RS Configuration Manager everything looks ok except for Initialization which is Not Configured. When I click on it I gt an error that inidcates that ther version of the Report Server database and Reporting services is out of sync. I tried upgrading the database on the Database Setup Panel.     - Known assembly FileIOPermission error, still no solution I'm trying to write to a text file from my custom assembly and I keep getting FileIOPermission. The only way I can get it to work is by changing the PermissionSetName of the whole CodeGroup from Nothing to FullTrust. The assembly itself is very simple and all it does is it writes one line to a text file. Here is what I did so far: 1. I asserted the permission in my code. 2. I put the text file and my assembly into ReportSevrer bin folder and changed the text file's security to allow "NETWORK SECURITY" (it is IIS6) and just in case "Everyone" to write to it. 3. I added CodeGroup just after the code group with Url="$CodeGen$/*" to the rssrvpolicy.config file with PermissionSetName="FullTrust". I even installed Visual Studio 2005 to get access to PermCalc tool. All it showed me was that my dll needs FileIOPermission with Unrestricted="true" and SecurityPermission with Flags="Assertion" in the CodeGroup which I also tried by creating a seperate PermissionSet. What else can I possibly try?     - queueing and submitting reports i am just wondering if anybody knows of any third party software, or a good way to implement the following using the webservice. in our current reporting engine (inhouse designed) users can select a report, select the parameters and submit it to be run, when its complete it shows up in a sort of inbox, and then can select one or more and click PRINT .. i'm wanting to implement the same sort of workflow in reporting services because reportmanager just doesn't have good workflow for such circumstances. any ideas, hints, systems out there that already do this would be appreciated. whether rs 2000 or rs 2005 in implementing it manually i see a problem with the fact that the 'prequery' i.e getting parameters from lookups is done at the same time that the reprot is run.. is there a way to intercept just the parameter gathering GUI and gather the parameters from that (so that we can make our own queueing and rendering via the webservice engine?)     - Color inconsistent on each slice of Pie Hello all!! I have created a pie chart that is embedded in a matrix report, therefore creating a new pie for every row. The problem I am having is the pie slice for the same series is changing each time there is a new pie. For example, in the first pie Cars may be designated as green but in the second pie it may be red. I would like the colors to be consistent; all cars are represented as green slices. Oh and if there are no cars don't use the color green for another slice. I think this can be done using a nested expression but I am unsure how to write it....I either need an example of an expression that can handle multiple slices or another way to handle the issue.     - Multiple Values on Point Labels Hellow all, Is there a way to show multiple point labels on a pie chart? I have the pie showing the percentage using the following format : =Sum(Fields!YTD.Value)/Sum(Fields!YTD.Value, "chart1") format code: %.0 I want to add the YTD value on a separate line so I will need to add a return then add some code like Sum(Fields!YTD.Value). I can get the two values to join by using a + sign but the number run together with the same format code. I need the first line to show as a percent and the second on a new line as a whole number.     - Implementing custom forms authentication in RS 2000 Hi, I am a trying to implement a custom authentication for RS 2000. The report server piece works well with that. But whenever I try to run Report Manager it is failing to authenticate. that run is passed to a child report which uses the id from that run to
generate a list of possible values to generate the drill through report. My
problem is that I seem to have to set both values from the top level report
and then the second report does not show the parameters. If I browse
directly to the second report then I have the option of entering parameters.

Should I be able to see parameters when drill into a report

I forgot to mention that when I am in the designer the parameters are always
visible, but when I deploy to website and try to browse the report, that is
when they ar not visible.

I have the same problem but only with the latest CTP (Sept), it worked fine
in the June version.
