    - How to FTP via VPN to sites with real adresses on different IP's ? Hi, I am using Windows 2003 Server. The VPN works fine, but I want to FTP through the VPN so the connection is encrypted. The problem is each of my IIS sites has a real Internet address specified, w.x.y.z. So when the VPN comes up using a private IP, I can't connect to any of the FTP sites using the VPN server's IP, 10.10.10.2. Could you give me specific directions how to deal with this?     - Viewing Reports over the internet This is a continuation of a previous question I asked, I've made progress but still not quite there! To simplify testing and remove as many variables as possible I have prepared a very simple report based on the Northwind database and deployed it to a Windows 2003 server. If I access //servername/reportserver I can veiw and run the report. However if I try to access http://www.domain.co.uk/reportserver I can see the report listing directory and run it but it always hangs on the 'Report is being generated' screen. The final goal is to have a C# developed asp.net application producing reports over the intranet and when necessary the internet but this is showing the same symptoms. I'm presuming there must be a permissions issue somewhere and once solved on the simple northwind report the asp one should follow suit. We have installed Reporting Services evaluation edition along with RS Service pack 1 on a Windows 2003 server - per cpu licensing and no ssl security was selected. Sql server standard edition is installed on the same server. The report's data component connection has been set to use a user with enough permissions on the database (briefly tried sa, again with the same result). So far I have:- Tried every combination of <ReportServerUrl>, <ReportServerExternalUrl> and <ReportServerVirtualDirectory> settling on the latter. Tried many folder permissions on the physical ReportServer directory. Also, although we are behind a hardware firewall the server was briefly set as a DMZ with no success.     - conditionally execute a subreport I have a report that contains several subreports, one of which is meant to be displayed only when the subject of the report has a particular job title. The data source for this subreport is a stored procedure, and in that procedure I examine the job title and execute the code only for the specified job title, but SQL Server goes ahead and opens all of the tables anyway, increasing overhead on a report that already takes several hours to run.     - Nested report? I want to create a report that retrieves data when I click on different items on the same report page. What I want to do is to first get an employee, and the hours registered for this person at this period. When I click on the person's name, I want to show a new report, that shows all the clients that this person has registered hours working with this period. When I click on a client, I want to show a new report, that shows all the projects that this person has worked on for this client during this period. The projects should preferably be showed inside the table showing the clients, so you can see what client the projects are connected to. I've managed to create this with 3 different datasets in one report. Unfortunately, the report will get all the data at once, but I want it to get the project data when you click on a client, not when you load the report. Is this possible? All help appreciated!     - problem with images on the report Hello All, I am using Image control with database sourced images on my reports. The images are stored in WMF format. There is no problem when the report is viewed in web browser but when I export it as a PDF or TIFF, the images are not shown and a cross (X) is shown instead of the image. Downloading files one by one makes it too time consuming.     - installation problems with W2003/WSS I have not been able to install SRS onto a W2003 server that hosts Windows Sharepoint, and (briefly) had the .NET 2.0 beta framework installed. I believe this is due to the "unclean" removal of 2.0 (the aspnet_admin and aspnet_state services still seem to point at the 2.0 directory, which has no remaining executables). The "ReportingService" is not installed / instantiated, although according to BOL it should be. I have attempted to use the command-line tool as suggested in the readme.htm file with the installation, but again, no luck. I haven't been able to ascertain where the install log might be parked. Funny, this installation went pretty smoothly on my XP box. I guess I may have to rebaseline this puppy at some point, due to mistakenly attempting to run the 2.0 fx with WSS. Running this report from the reporting service interface or via the web is fine. However, we have a requirement for running this report via some very speciifc schedules. To achieve this we are programatically rendering this report. We supply three paramters for this to run. The report runs a stored procedure to obtain a list of valid periodIds. We pass it a valid period id (can be found in the list) however, we get the error message below. Any pointers greatly appreciated.     - Reporting Services - String parameter problems We have noticed that SQL Reporting Services uses the 'nvarchar' data type for all report parameters of type 'string'. If the actual datatype of the column is 'varchar' this causes (serious) performance problems as SQL Server must convert the 'varchar' column to match the 'nvarchar' parameter. Is there any way to control the data type that is chosen for 'string' parameters? And why does SQL Reporting Services choose 'nvarchar' when the column is of type 'varchar'? For example, if I have a table defined as: CREATE TABLE [TestTable] ( [TheKey] [int] NOT NULL , [Name] [varchar] (50) NULL , CONSTRAINT [PK_TestTable] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED ( [TheKey] ) ) ... and I write a simple report to display this data with a query of : SELECT Name FROM TestTable WHERE (Name = @NameParam) .. I notice that the query sent to SQL Server (from Profiler) is: exec sp_executesql N'SELECT Name FROM TestTable WHERE (Name = @NameParam)', N'@NameParam nvarchar(4000)', @NameParam = N'Name0' ... notice that the parameter type is 'nvarchar(4000)' but the actual column data type is 'varchar'. If you create an execution plan for this query you can see that SQL Server must perform alot more work than if the parameter was defined as 'varchar(4000)'. Thanks, Scott. The whole process is as follow: Application generates dataset, saves that to XML file, then it calls the report that uses custom data processing extension to read XML file and construct dataset used by reporting services to generate report. Because this is the way my report access dataset it is not possible to use dynamic designer. I am designing a report knowing dataset schema in advance. (Data schema and schema in XML file are matching).     - List subscriptions method on forms authentication Hi, I am using forms authentication for Reporting services. I was trying to call the method ListSubscriptions(string name, string owner). This method returns a valid list when I supply null for both name and owner. It also supplies valid result when I supply the name. However, it throws UnknownUserNameException when the owner value is supplied. The owner is valid because, when I retrieve the subscription, I see the owner value for the subscription.     - Frustrated with Parameters Automatically Reloading the Report Hello. Here's the scenario: I have two report parameters, both with default values. As I would expect, the report loads automatically in Preview mode. But why, when I try to change either parameter value, it seems to automatically reload the report on simply setting focus to the text box for the other parameter. I can't seem to stop this from happening, and it actually prevents me from being able to run the report with any other values than the default values. Am I missing something?     - Using Cascading Parameters with SP I have an report which uses an SP. When i run it in the data window and manually pass it parameters it runs fine and returns the correct result set. I wanted to set up cascading parameters in rep services for this. However when i try and use them it does not return any records. I am using differnet datasets for the cascading parameters as per the books advice. i am also setting them up using the same parameter names.     - How to pass a relative URL in "Jump to URL"? I am generating reports using the SOAP Render API and serving the reports on a Web server separate from Reporting Services. I am using "Jump to URL" as a mechanism to implement hyperlinked (drill-through) reports. I would like to specify the report URL's as relative URL's (such as MyDrillThroughHandler.jsp?myreportname="SomeReport"). The problem is that when I render the report, the hyperlink gets mangled, and prepended with the Reporting Services Web server as an absolute URL The only way I can get the URL that I specify in "Jump to URL" to pass through unaltered is to make it absolute (it must start with "http:"). I don't want to use absolute URL's because I am deploying the reports into multiple environments, and I don't want to change the URL's for each deployment.     - Report Description Overwrite Issue When I deploy a report from MSDE, the description from within the report properties is displayed under the report name/link within the Report Manager. When I modify the report description in MSDE and then re-deploy the report it doesn't update the one I see in Report Manager? I can delete the report in Report Manager and then redeploying creates the modified description; but I don't really want to have to delete reports everytime I modify the description.     - Refresh Report from Browser I post a report on report server. I open the report from IE browser, after I updated the database and I click REFRESH button on toolbar, report was not refreshed. The only way is that I have to close browser and launch it again and open the report to display refreshed data.     - Data in Table not showing I am just starting with Report Services, so this may be an easy or dumb problem but here goes: I am working in Visual Studio with a simple report based on a sproc with several parameters that returns a result set. In the report I have set up a table and the dataset for it, as well as the parameters. Everything works great until I test the report, the report renders but the table shows as having no data. I can go to the data tab and run the sproc and enter the same parameters and I get data back. I have checked all the places I could think of that might hide the data, but nothing.
