    - Custom Assemblies and accessing report connection parameters I am trying to access the datasource connection properties (connection string etc) from a report -I will be accessing the information via a custom assembly, or passing it to a custom assembly with a view to firing a stored procedure at the end of the report in order to update a number of status flags including the last page number of a report. The custom assmbly's done, but has a hard coded connection string - I need to get at the reports connection string so I fire the sp in the same db as the report's bound to.     - Cant connect to Report Server Database Hello All, I have my Reportservices installed at a windows 2000 box (RSBox) and a reportserver Database at a windows 2000 box (DBbox). I am using Windows authentication. I have been successully Deploying and viewing MS enterprise Reports .. but suddenly i got a issue... When ever I try to deploy or view the deployed reports I get an error message "The report server cannot open a connection to the report server database. A connection to the database is required for all requests and processing. (rsReportServerDatabaseUnavailable) Get Online Help Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection. " I have checked my Report server database which is running and Reporting services are also running also I am able to browse to reports level but when I try to view it I get this error. Any Idea how I can track this issue. There are other people too who are owner of these production boxes. I need to trace where the issue is... any Idea wil be highly appreciated..     - Reporting services fail to return large report I have a huge report (approx. 120MB) needs to be returned from reporting services. However, most of the time the request die before the report is returned. While I am debugging this problem, I realize that an exception is thrown between the BeginRender() and EndRender() methods of Reporting Service. Exception: Unable to read data from the transport connection. I am not sure if there is any limit in report size that can be generated/transported from reporting service. Reporting service is called from another ASP.Net web service. This web service also resides in the same box as reporting service and SQL server 2000. This box is running Win 2003 and IIS 6(IIS 5 isolation mode).     - Select data using User Defined Functions Can I use a SQL udf as a datasource for a report? E.G. ISQL query Declare @MyID VARCHAR(5) SET @MyID = 'AC001' Select * from dbo.udf_ReturnData(@MyID) data is returned okay in ISQL when I use the select stmt. However in my data source I get an error message telling me to declare the variable (@MyID) that I am passing into the function. I have entered this as the parameter value and defined a report parameter of the same. So can you use SQL udf's in SQL Server Reporting Services with a dynamic paramter?     - Deploying a report to a remote server How do I deploy are report that is not on my network? I need to deploy my report to the production server. I have FTP access, and I usually Remote Desktop to the machine, but its not on my network. When I try to deploy to the remote server, I get an error saying that that server can't be accessed.     - DPE throws object error if dataset returns 0 rows I have a custom Data Processing Extension that implements the IDataReader, using a .net DataSet as the backend datasource. The dataset obtains its data from an Oracle db and the IDataReader successfully reads through the data when the dataset contains at least one row. My issue is that if the query to Oracle yields 0 rows, the report throws an "Object reference not set to an instance of an object error." I stepped through in the debugger, and it appears that the report engine disposes of the IDataReader before the report tries to use it. I say this because a breakpoint in the Dispose() method is hit before a breakpoint in the Read() is hit. If the dataset has at least one row, then the Read() method is hit prior to the Dispose(). Does the report engine think it can toss the object because there are no rows? It does not appear that a "regular" datasource (ODBC connection) behaves this way. I want to be able to test in the report -- IIF(CountRows..... and conditionally hide objects if there are no rows -- or use the "NoRows" property of dataregions, but I get this object error before any thing else happens. As a final test, I deleted everything from the RDL design side (a blank report with no report objects). Then I just defined the dataset using my DPE on the Data tab of the designer. I then ran the report and again got the object error. So it would appear that it is the dataset itself that has the issue and not anything in regard to the report layout or use of the dataset.     - subscription error messages I found a strange behaviour of SQL Reporting service. Due to bad login one of my subscription was failed to write the pdf file to the network share. After that I changed the username /password to run the file for next schedule. When I looked at the my subscription page where I can see all the subscriptions, the report was generated successfully. I also checked the network drive for the said report and it was there. However when I went to subcription page for the individual report the message was saying that the subscription was failed.     - security issues Hi, I am stuck with trying to get my users to be able to properly access reports. Does anybody have a link, or diagram, to the proper steps I need to take to ensure that someone can access a report? I am pulling my hair out between SQL, IIS, Windows and Reporting Services. I am trying to make windows authentication work and sometimes it does and sometimes not. I am using Windows 2003 server to store reports and trying to connect to another box with sql on it.     - Rectangles that touch causes render problems I am currently on SP1. How can I build rectangles in a report that touch and have it render correctly. Our client wants the new report (reporting services) to look "EXACTLY" like their previous report. I was able to use the rectangle to mimic their previous report but it does not render properly. If I print the report from the IExplorer, it prints it as it appears on the screen with the scroll bar, the area above the report (where I choose the parameters) and so on.     - Difference between dates... Hi All... What I would like to achieve: Calculate the amount of time spent on a job (JDEID) per day.     - Passing a parameter from a query in a link to another report Hi, I am trying to link to reports together, I want to be able to pass a ID number returned from a query in this link.     - Custom web user control in Report Is there somebody with expirience in using a custom web user control in a report? I've seen that the toolbox contains a "My User Controls" tab. I like to implement a parameter interface that will be displayed in the main area of a report. Belowe this parameter intervace will be a link "View Report". So the user have one site for spedify a filter and afterwards he can view the report in a new page. The reason for this is, that the parameters in reporting services are unreliable and they can not be localized at runtime. Furthermore the don't allowe navigation in a drop down list by enter several characters of the search term. Can I implement a user control which expose properties for the selected parameters so I can refer to this properties in the navigation tab of a textbox.     - Grouping/Sum Question Hi there I'm pulling out my hair with what I suspect is actually something silly. I have a report with the following structure. --[TABLE]---- --[table1_group1]---- --[table1_group2]---- --[detail]---- My data source has a field, "minutes", which is displayed in table1_group2. This field is repeated for each time in the detail, but is not displayed there. I wish to display a sum of "minutes" which is displayed in [table1_group2] in [table1_group1], and not a sum of "minutes" which is in repeated for each detail record. If I place a textbox in [table1_group1] and specify a value of "=sum(fields!minutes.value)", the result is not what I'm looking for. If I specify a value for the textbox of "=sum(fields!minutes.value,"table1_group2"), I get an error: --- "c:\work\reports\session detail\Session Detail.rdl The value expression for the textbox ?textbox22' has a scope parameter that is not valid for an aggregate function. The scope parameter must be set to a string constant that is equal to either the name of a containing group, the name of a containing data region, or the name of a data set." --- It also won't let me do a sum of a textbox from the inner group - is there a way to do this?     - Command button behaviour in RS Manager Apologies right away if this is a dumb question - I've cast about t'internet looking for any references and, not finding them, wound up here looking for assistance. Working in RS Manager, having uploaded report files, when trying to set a shared data source, clicking the Browse button results in nothing happening - no status bar action, no spinning IE globe, just button down, button up, no actions firing. Seems to be the same with the Change Location button when creating a linked report too, if that shows any consistency. If I edit a folder and click Move, I get the tree view of my folders and am able to move a folder, which I'm guessing is using the same kind of action. Any thoughts, greatly appreciated. -- Paul.     - Capacity Planning Guidelines for databses : ReportServer, ReportServerTempDB Is there any guidelines for capacity planning on the two report services databases? All source of information from Microsoft seems to indicate we can only monitor and increase the capacity as and when we see there is a under capacity issues. I would assume based on certain crtieria we should be able to estimate (won't be exact for capacity planning purposes), such as: Number of concurrent users Number of reports Assume caching is on and hit rate is zero (for tempDB sizing) Any advice is very much appreciated.     - reading files Since there was no answer on my first post and I'm in a hurry and I have no clue on what to do I'm gonna post again. I have code in a report like the following: Function Translate(key as String, language as String) as String Dim mgr as System.Resources.ResourceManager Dim asm as System.Reflection.Assembly Dim ci as System.Globalization.CultureInfo asm = System.Reflection.Assembly.Load("translate") mgr = new System.Resources.ResourceManager("translate", asm) Translate = mgr.GetString(key, new System.Globalization.CultureInfo(language)) End Function Assembly.Load("translate") loads a satellite assembly (a resource dll) and mgr.GetString retrieves a string based on the passed in CultureInfo. When I pass in "en" as CultureInfo, resource.dll loads the .\en\translate.resources.dll and gets the string from there. When I pass in "nl" it looks in .\nl\translate.resources.dll and gets the string from there. If the dll cannot be found the string is retrieved from the default language which is just translate.dll. So, a textbox has the following expression =Code.Translate("SomeLabel", Parameters!Language.Value) and the textbox is localized. This works perfectly in the reportdesigner, but after deploying to the reportserver the textbox ALWAYS falls back to the default assembly. Neither an exception is thrown nor an error is returned, but GetString just returns english text. I get a feeling that the dll's in the subdirectories can't be loaded and that the dll falls back to the original because it doesnt have permissions. I tried lots and lots without success, I'm really out of ideas. Could it be that? That I need to give reportserver permissions to subfolders of the bin folder?     - Image Display - localhost and machine name in url The embedded images display fine when machine name is used in the url to view the reports. However they do not display when localhost is used in the url. They simply show up as red x boxes. What could be the reason for this? Both url addresses are used in the IE instance on the same box on which report services deployed. Interestingly if you follow this order in the url, you will see the image in the end. localhost (image not visible) -> machine name (image is visible) -> localhost (image visible) Can any one throw some light on this behavior?     - Is this possible About the report viewer sample provided with the installation of reporting services; this is a pretty neat control. Unfortunately it does not allow me to capitalize on the RS Webservice (i.e.Credentials ) which i desperately need in order to allow outside users access to the reports. Is there a way that both of these features can be combined? Can this be considered as a feature for the future (toolbar viewer with credentials passed) ?     - Pagination Control Hi Ppl I have alot of headache with pagination control on reporting services. Is there a way to control how many groups/items/rows in one page? Is there a way to show all items on 1 big page, instead of paging them? I've try to set the report hieght, but that doesn't help at all. If pagination must happen, then is there a way to search through all pages for a perticular string? Lastly is there a way to stop a group being seperated into 2 pages, (I know you can have 1 group per page, but thats not what i want).     - domain account validation error on install I'm trying to install the reporting services on windows server 2003 that is attached to a domain network. When using a valid domain user account to connect to the report server database, I get the error "The domain account that you specified cannot be validated. Verify that the user name and password are correct, and the account has permission to log on to this couputer". I know the account is valid because I am using it to stop and start services on the machine. Does anyone have any clue. I believe that this is a installshield validation error. Please help!!!!!!     - Deploy a sql report to production I created a SQL Report with background images in Visual Studio . It looks good in development environment. After I deployed it to the report server and open it from web application, the format changed. One page in development became one and half page.     - Forms Authentication from Portal Web App Hi, We successfully setup forms authentication on Reporting Services SP1. We used the Microsoft sample, CustomSecurity.dll. When you access Report Manager directly, everything works great. The only sample I could find regarding how to do this was by Teo Lachev: http://www.devx.com/dotnet/Article/26759/0/page/5 Unfortunately, when we deployed this app, it seems as if the cookie never gets saved, since the user gets prompted for the credentials once when they log in and again when they try to retrieve a report.     - Subreport using DataSet DPE that could return 0 rows throws errors I have a custom DPE that implements the IDataReader interface, setting the internal source data as a DataSet. The dataset contains a single table which could potentially contain 0 rows, depending upon the report parameters. My particular problem is with subreports. If the subreport's dataset has 0 rows, I get a "Error: Subreport could not be shown" error. I suspect that any dataregion that is bound to the custom DPE that returns 0 rows will have trouble as I see #Error in other places in the main report as well when the dataset it is bound to has 0 rows. I have tried hiding the dataregion by checking with CountRows(), but the error seems to get thrown before this.     - exporting a sum formula to excel Hello, I appreciate anyone's help with this issue. I have three columns, Cost, Quantity and ExtendedCost. ExtendedCost is a calculated column that exports to Excel as a formula (=ReportItems!Cost.Value*ReportItems!Quantity.Value). What I need is a field that sums all values of ExtendedCost and exports as a formula to Excel - =sum(ReportItems!ExtCost.Value). If I put =sum(ReportItems!ExtCost.Value) into a textbox in the body of the report, I get an error because I can only put an aggregate function on a Report Item in the Header or Footer. When I put =sum(ReportItems!ExtCost.Value) into a textbox, only the value is exported to Excel, not the formula. Also, when in the header or footer, the textbox only contains a sum for the values on the current page of the report. I'm getting an "An unexepected error occurred in Report Processing" when
trying to navigate to the next page in a report. The main report uses a
subreport in the group footer. All works well if I take out the subreport.
Are there issues with using subreports in group footers?
