I've created a publisher document and now need to add some advertisements
which have been sent as pdfs. Without access to Adobe (only reader), can
this be done?

I would suggest getting GhostScripit and GSView from
http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/, and converting the PDF to an image or
PostScript format.

Thanks Ed. But when I tried that I get and adobe thumbnail inserted in the
document, not the image. The thumbnail also prints (rather than the image).
Am I missing a print driver or something?

If you are getting advertisements, that usually means money. Take part
of it and buy the full version of Acrobat. It will make dealing with ads
way easier.

What?!
Did you just go to Insert > Object and select your file?
That's the only way I can think of in which you could have got the Adobe
icon.

You need to install GhostScript, followed by GSView - both are available
from the link I mentioned earlier. You then need to load up your PDF in
GSView, and select the option to convert to either EPS, PS, PNG, or TIFF.

Suggest open it (as image) in either Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, then
save av JPEG or EPS to import in your Publisher document. Wolud mean bying
either of them, but PS Elements is worth the money.
