If I am sent Publisher files made in the newer versions of Publisher, why
wont they open in Publisher 2000? Is there a converter available as there is
for Word file conversions?
This incompatiblity between versions is a major irritation. Why does
Microsoft FORCE people into costly upgrades when previous versions are
working well?? Later versions of MS programs are sometimes worse containing
more annoying features than the more straightforward previous ones. The
change of layout etc is also disconcerting.

Holy CRAP!

You're happy with Pub 2000?

I saw a friend's Pub 2002 and immediately knew I needed a newer
version.

I bought Pub 2007. When the friend saw it, she had to have it too 8-)

Tell whoever it is that is sending you such files to first save them
in a compatible mode.

Or bite the bullet and spend the $90 to upgrade to the latest version.

This happens in many programs when it is required to change file formats to
accomodate new features.
Microsoft and Publisher are not alone here.
Afterall Pub 2000 is several versions and many years old now.

Your sender can convert the file to 2000, it will bloat if there are many images
involved. The sender could also send as a PDF. There are many free PDF
converters around.
