I am running Pub 2002 on XP Pro. I just reformatted my system and installed
XP Pro so I'm starting at step one again. To add to the mess I just bought a
new printer and this is the first I've tried printing a Publisher file with
it.

I just inserted a .jpg file in my newsletter. It looks fine on the screen
but when I print it, I get one large black rectangle instead of the picture.
Could it be because it was a .pdf that I've saved as a .jpg? I have Acrobat
Standard and it seemed like the easiest way to insert the file. If not, I'm
open to suggestions.

JoAnn a clean install like you have done is the only way to go. Will all
fall neatly and tidily into place after a couple days after these hiccups.

Have you download and installed the updates for Windows XP and Pub 2002.

The Windows XP updates can be around 40Mb to 50Mb depending on when your
version of XP was manufactured.

Did you install the driver from the CD that came with the printer, or did
you go to the website of the printer manufacture and download the latest
version of the printer driver. I always through away the CD's that come
with hardware and go to the manufacturers website and download the latest
drivers.

A PDF saved as a JPG should not be an issue.

It was really my only choice. I didn't want to upgrade my OS but my back was
against the proverbial wall.

Oh yeah - every last one of them. Even did the same with 98. I'm one of
those people who understand why it's important to makesure you are running
all of the relevent patches.

Tell me about it. I still had dial-up when I had 98. When we got my
husband's computer last year, I took it into work where we had a shared T-1
line. Still took some time but XP had scads of updates and I knew it was
going to take a while.

The printer is a new one so I had to use the drivers that came on the CD.

> A PDF saved as a JPG should not be an issue.

I didn't think so either. I was able to save the file as a .tif and it
printed fine. Now I just have to figure out what setting is wrong. Thank you
for the help.

JoAnn what model Canon did you buy?

Ahh............nice try. Our very first printer was a Canon and I swore
never again. If I tell you the brand I bought, you'll make derogatory
comments and since you've been so nice this time, I'd rather not set you
off.

Well, if you did not buy a Canon you must expect problems.

Canon today are the most reliable quality no trouble inkjet printers on the
market.

Canon constantly supply updated drivers if needed, and for way back in the
past.

Canon drivers install flawlessly and give *NO* problems.

If you bought an HP lemon, enjoy the problems and troubles you will have,
and in six months time there will be NO driver updates.

Now see what I mean. I didn't want to tell you because I knew you'd go all
negative and make nasty anti-HP comments.

We had a crappy Canon back in 96. It was awful and I swore never again. I
had my HP932 for over 3 years and it worked just fine. I was using it under
XP Pro but then I screwed something up in the drivers. I needed to print
ASAP and opted to buy a new one and give the older one to my husband to use
on his XP Pro system. Instead a friend is now using it on her many-times
tweaked 586 with Win95. It works just fine for her and she needed it more
than my husband.

Even if you don't agree, I personally have had no issues with HP printers.
If, in the future, they let me down, then I will find another brand that
meets my demands. Until then.....................

JoAnn, JoAnn, 1996 was when you and I were still in our early teens.

Every brand has had their disasters at times, but Canon fixed theirs way
before 2000.

HP now are the biggest disaster computer equipment manufacturer in the
world.

HP will not fix current model printer or scanner drivers,
HP will not update their drivers once a printer has reached 6 months of age
HP will not update printer drivers for XP which every other manufacturer has
done
HP are a nIgHtMAre

But Joann, have you checked for newer printer drivers? It doesn't matter if
it is a new printer in a new box with a new cd. Drivers are always updated
daily at the HP website.

I "think" I'm running the latest. I will certainly double check. Could it
cause the original problem? (A .jpg inserted in a Pub 2002 file was just one
big black blob. Tifs are fine.)

JoAnn return the rotten lemon HP printer for a refund, and get yourself a
beautiful ripe cherry Canon that will give you no issues whatsoever.

Canon also update drivers and fix them for all models, unlike HP which leave
you high and dry after six months.

HP today is faulty sub-standard garbage.

Like I said, I had a Canon and it sucked. I prefer not to do that agian.
I've always had a very positive experience with HP's printers.

JoAnn you had a Canon in the deep dark ages ago that was a problem, now you
have a lemon HP that is a problem and will always be. HP is the lemon brand
of the world. HP may be able to find some customers in Iraq, there are
probably still a few sucker customers to be had there.

Joann, your item printed perfectly on my HP P1000. Do you have another
printer to try it with?
