    - predecessors I am making a master project sheet that summarizes many similar sub projects. Every sub project has internal predecessors. The sub projects use the same recourse pool. I need to create external predecessors to some tasks of the successor project to its predecessor project (for example the 2nd project is related to the 1st and the 3rd project is related to the 2nd and the 4th to the 3rd etc). This is easy if it is done manually but who can it be done when you want to use a macro? THE BIG PROBLEM IS THAT EVERY TIME YOU USE THE MACRO IT DESTROYS THE INTERNAL PREDECESSORS BECAUSE IT DOSE NOT ADD THE EXTERNAL PREDECESSORS TO THE INTERNALS.     - Calculating end of project profit margin Using Custom fields I have set up my project to calculate the estimated and actual profit margin. The Task Cost field uses the billing rate and the Custom Field that calculates the Estimated Internal Cost uses the formula: [Work]*avaerage rate for resource (salary + average overheads). Subtract one from the other in another Custom Field and you have the margin. Actual Internal Cost uses the formula [Actual Work]*average rate. Subtract that from Cost and you have the Actual Margin. This is fine but I really want to see what the Profit Margin will be at the end of the project. Using Actual Work lets me see the margin decreasing or incresasing on a daily basis but I can't see where it is likely to end up, based on the current trend. To make it easy to see I'd also like to be able to graph this somehow. Any ideas how to do this? After this is achieved the next step is to role it out across the enterprise so we can see the overall picture across multiple projects....but one thing at a time.     - Catching new filename after save as Usually the save as will fall into BeforeSave and ProjectAfterSave event after the file is saved. From there, I can retrieve the new file name. However, when I create a new project and close the project, the MSProject will ask to save or not, next I click yes and give a new name. Only BeforeSave will rise up. Unfortunately, Project retains the original max units in each task and does not change them even though they were changed in the Resource.     - Task Name Format When I create a new project the name in the task cell does NOT have WBS information with it.     - Printing Range - Gannt Chart I'm trying to print a project created by a colleague... When I go to print preview, the columns show up fine, but on the chart side of the page, the dates start almost 12 months before they should and I only get a tiny bit of the blue bars showing up.     - Resource Management Hi We are using Project 2000 with a Windows 2000 desktop. I have been tasked with looking at a way to improve resource mgmt for our IT area. Project 2000 is already widely used by the staff to manage their projects. However, there is no central resource pool for people to access - they have just been creating new resources within the project file each time a project is created. I have created a resource pool project file for the area(approx 20 people) which will be used in the future by the staff for planning their projects. There will probably be a maximum of 20-25 projects at a time 'attached' to this resource pool. After that long buildup my question is what is everyone's opinion regarding a way to show staff absense from work (ie unavailable)? I know that I can go into the actual resource pool and mark dates as being "nonworking time" for staff holidays/training/sick etc but is there a way to create an actual project file that shows this info? From a resource mgmt point of view we would like a way to not only see if a resource is just unavailable but also why it is unavailable - holidays/sick etc. I would welcome any advice.     - Custom fields in the .mpt My predecessor, within the global .mpt, updated a text field so that it had a value list and the field is limited to that list. We no longer need this setting, but no matter what I do, I can't get rid of it. I go into the organizer and try to delete it. I insert a project and it automatically has a finsih date for 1/24/06 (which is the finish date of the master project assigned automatically by MSProject) I have to expand the subtask in order for the correct date to show up for that particular project, and this happens for every new project I enter on my Master project. may go something like - "You can have Joe 50% in Jan and 75% Feb - April".
What is the best way to set this up in project so it will schedule properly
and I can use automatic leveling?

Hi,

IMHO if you want to use leveling it is best to reflect these availabilities
in the calendar (make them work so many hours and minutes per day during the
period) and always use 100% as assignment units as well as max units.
That way you never have to change units on any task and leveling does a
perfect job.
After all, whenever they are there for you, you want them to work 100% of
their brain, isn't it? :-))
