    - Late Dates incorrect after indenting under Summary Task Many of you know there is a "bug" in MS Project that affects the late dates and backward pass. If you indent a group of tasks under the summary task the late dates for that group are changed by the summary task. A weird problem that only surfaces when calculating total slack and the backward pass. I've heard of some people using MSO/MFO anchors at the end of thier network to solve this. Does anybody else have a solution. My company (a rather large one) has submitted this to Microsoft and they acknowledge that it is a bug, but aren't planning on fixing it anytime soon. Please advise.     - Task Reporting by Resource - All Projects We just completed an implementation of Project Pro Server 2003. After one month of time reporting we're finding it increasingly difficult to extract the level of detail our IT management desires. The holy grail would be a report (via Portfolio Analyzer, Crystal, MS Reporting Services, whatever) that allows us to extract how much time was reported by each resource against all tasks (and owning project) for any date range. In digging through the ERD, I can't find the right table relationships that link resources to tasks and projects in such a way that I can did out time reported by day. I can't even find values that I can interpret in attributes labled as 'ACT_WORK', etc. How have others resolved this? We've got the technical expertise on staff to accomplish this if we had the information that defines where the data is stored and how it's encoded.     - Can I insert predecessor tasks as ranges in the Gantt Chart view I have a final milestone task of zero duration that is the successor of set of tasks, let's say tasks 10, 11, ..., 50. Task "milestone" is done when all task 10-50 are done (just an example). Can I somehow state that the predecessors for "milestone" are tasks 10-50 or 10:50 rather than 10, 11, 12, ..., 48, 49, 50? If I must enumerate the tasks with commas, let me ask a variant question. Each of the tasks are identified with an integer. Is there a way to state predecessors as tags, like 'doX', 'doY' and 'doZ'?     - Project could not open Global.mpt This is the error message I get upon opening Project Standard 2003: "Project could not open Global.mpt" I have done as the error insisted, that I rerun setup and repair the installation. I have copied the file from the disk overtop the actual Global.mpt. I have copied it from other working stations. I have reinstalled numerous times and versions, including 2003 Pro. I have upgraded the rest of Office from 97 (I know...weird) to 2000. And yet I still receive that same error message. This is the only machine of rough 10 giving me any issue. Of course, having just removed a virus may ba an issue. However... a clean install of the program should repair the issue. However, upon uninstalling, deleting the program directory manually, reinstalling and trying again I get the same error.     - Missing Text when printing Gantt Chart I'm priting the 'Resource Names' field on the right side of the taskbars in my Gantt Chart. It seems that every now and then, MSP gets in a rut where the resource names of the last task in the list (at the bottom) are missing. When this starts to occur, it occurs consistently, each time I PrintPreview (or just Print) a Gantt Chart. If I close my project and reopen, the problem goes away, for about 3-5 PrintPreviews of the Gantt Chart, then the problem returns. Close and Reopen, and the cycle continues. Any suggestions?     - Macro for printing Gantt Charts I'm interested in a macro that will print out a Gantt Chart for each of the resources - by this I mean that the macro will filter the table for "Resource Names contains etc.", then print setup and change the header to include the resource name currently being filtered for, then print. I set up a filter that queries for the resource name each time "Resource Name:"?, however, when I record the macro, it does not recognize my keystrokes. So if I ran the macro, it would just keep popping up the input box and I'd have to key the resource name each time. The macro should be able to cycle through the names in the resource sheet. (I've got 45 resources, so printing each individually is a PITA.) I've programmed in Excel and Access before, but not Project.     - Overallocation warning stuck I've got two resources that are showing in red and their Overallocation field is yes, however, they do not show an overallocation in the Resource Usage view. I go back to the start of my project and click 'Next Overallocation' and get a message that there are not overallocation.     - Times not calculating - Urgent! Project 2003, new user to MS Project I have built a project plan and put in some task and subtasks and it does not seem to be calculating properly. For example, a main task heading is "Create Speadsheets", where the total should calculate beside as it is in bold, then the 3 subtasks below which have the following times, .25h, .25h, and .5h. This should total 1 hour, but the main task shows .5 hours. I have checked the rest of the project and it also seems to be doing the same thing. It is not calculating the .25h properly.     - Filtering deliverable by dates At present, I have deliverables that can be filtered by this week, next week, this month and so on. Would that be possible to set up the filter that uses from the current calender date. For example if today is Feb 28 and I filter by "this month" I would like to see all deliverables for one month starting today not just the deliverables for the remining of the month which is Feb. 28 in this case.     - Start versus Actual Start... Here's where I stand... 1) Tasks entered (all fixed units/non-effort driven), tasks linked, time estimated, resources assigned at 100%, resources leveled 2) File has been baselined 3) Project has begun TRACKING IS MY PROBLEM: My approach is simply to ask each resource to let me know on a weekly basis the date they start (on each task), the # of hours per week for that task, and the date they finish. Of course some of my tasks have multiple resources assigned - still, they each report separately and when they are ALL done, the WHOLE task is complete. THEN THINGS DON'T GO AS PLANNED (as they do in any project)... Still, all I want to do is enter the above info as it is provided to me but many, many times the dates start playing "tricks" on me. I had assumed that my baseline would tell me the story of how things didn't go as planned as compared to actuals. So, my question is what is the difference between "Start" and "Actual Start"?     - Changing a task's duration I am adapting a Project Professional plan that someone else created. Tasks, durations and start/finish times were already entered, but resources were not. I have now specified resources and working times. When I try to add resource names to a task, however, it changes the start and/or finish date. Even when I open the task information and delete the duration, adding a resource alters the start/finish date. I have increased the resource's working hours to 1000% just to see if that is what is causing the task dates to change, but it doesn't help.     - MP Best Practices Iâ??m currently on the hunt for some best practices information that can help direct me down the right path. I am currently in a small-medium size organization that utilizes Microsoft Project to assist in managing projects. We use Project Server as a central point to manage the resource pool. Each Project Manager is responsible for managing there own resources. Our resources are often shared across multiple projects, so to ensure that we are not over allocating any one person at a corporate level, we use the levelling function. Understanding that levelling only ensures that resources are not over allocated, we need to then ensure that at each levelling point we â??clear levellingâ?? to maximize resource utilization or else MP will just push tasks to the next available point and ultimately blow out the project plan. However, by using the â??clear levellingâ?? function we are effectively freeing up time previously utilized which could be taken by another project if they are levelling at the same time you are and with the same resource needs (if that makes any sense). This could be a common scenario when auto-levelling; something we are currently grappling with. This is really a timing issue but a very likely one unless MP has safe guards in place to protect from such a thing. I have also noticed that the clear levelling/levelling combination does not maximize resource utilization to its full potential. Iâ??m guessing itâ??s probably not the right tool for this but would appreciate some direction on how best to do this. What Iâ??m looking for is some industry best practices to address: ï?? Shared resource management and the industry standard on controlling over allocation. Assuming levelling is the only answer then that leads to the next bullet. o Auto-levelling vs. manual levelling and maintaining resource control in a shared environment. ï??     - Resource Availability Setting vs. Leveling I'm having a bit of trouble using the Resource Availability setting for personnel in a project. I have people who will be available 100% then 50% of the time. I set the parameters for each person then leveled my project. Any tasks that were set to resource usage of 100% were not scheduled while the person was at 50% on the schedule. If I make the person available only 50% of the time using their calendar it levels just fine. It does appear that if I change the resource usage on the task from 100% to 50% it will level properly. however, that sort of defeats the purpose since I would like Project to figure what tasks can be done during the time the people will be 50%. Is there a way to set their availability to 50% and have the tasks schedule properly without having to change the settings on the task?     - Project Links With Excel Hi, I have a strange problem - I copy and paste special - paste link dates from Microsoft Project to Microsoft Excel. This has worked fine until recently when any new links I try and paste just return #N/A. Is there a way that I can remove all link references from the original project and start again?     - 24 hour working I'm presently trying to set up a normal shift-working pattern to include dayshift and nightshift how do you do this.     - Showing % complete on baselines We are trying to update progress in MS Project. What we want to do is have both the task bar and the baseline for the task visible. We have done this successfully, and our baseline is a hollow block. We want to be able to fill in the baseline according to the percentage completion of the task, regardless of any changes we may make to the actual task duration, start, or finish dates. This requires another bar style and originally this was done, with the bar starting at the baseline start and ending at the physical percentage completion. This only works correctly if the baseline and the task bar have the same start and end dates. As soon as dates, or durations are altered, it no longer does what we want it to. If we have 25% of the work complete for a task, we want 25% of the baseline to be filled in, regardless of whether the durations, or dates are of baseline and current plan are the same. The only way we seem to be able to this, is by customising fields to calculate the percentage complete as a duration of the baseline and then adding it to the baseline start date.     - Recurring Tasks I am wondering what is the best way to use 2003 to schedule recurring meeting where the dates of the meetings may change. I have a project which stretches about 3yrs. I used the recurring task to preliminarily schedule the meetings which occur bi-weekly. I then altered the dates for a few of the meetings. Now I want to add additional meetings to the reccurrence list, but every time I try it resets all my existing meeting dates back to the preset default reccurrance.     - Simple Gantt Chart In MS Project - Newbie Please excuse what may be an incredibly stupid question. I'm a database developer, and well versed in my apps, but Project has me stumped. Perhaps I'm trying to kill a fly with a F22. I'm importing into MS Project from Filemaker Pro via ODBC a database of about 150 seperate projects that we track. Pretty basic fields in the database for each project: Job Location, Job Description, Project Manger, Planning Start Date, Planning End Date, Bid Start Date, Bid End Date, Construction Start Date, Construction End Date, Project Manager Comment. All I want MS Project to do is import the data of all the fields above, and plot them on a big Gantt Chart (we have BIG plotters to print).     - MS Project - Master/sub-Project dates Hello, I am having the same problem as Camille, who posted a question regarding the project dates for inserted projects (see 11/17/2004 message MS Project). I find that if I "Select All", then select "Show All Tasks", all the inserted projects will revert to their correct dates. But this isn't a practical solution for making sure someone opening the master project file will see the correct dates. Any suggestions? Hi,

The simplest solution is to insert all the projects in a master plan, then
filter fro milestones.
