    - Error updating assignments imported from Excel I'm importing tasks, resources and assignements from Excel, using a map and following the great information from various other posts. I'm having a problem when importing updated assignments. I have a resource assigned to a task and it imports just fine the first time. I change the Work value in the assignment record in Excel and then import it again. When I do, I get an error dialog with this message, "You cannot have the same resource assigned twice to the same task. To have the same person work at different times on the same task use resource contouring." I am importing Unique_ID, Task_ID (Text 1), Task_Name, Resource_Name, and Work.     - Project 2007: Save as 2003 format, and password protect? This may be a newbie quesiton, but here goes... I have a project created in MS Project 2007. I'd like to save it in a 2003 file format, and password protect it at the same time. When I select "Microsoft Project 2000-2003" as the "Save as type", then all of the password fields are disabled when I select tools->general options on the "Save As" dialogue box. The "Protection Password" box is enabled if I try to save it as a Project 2007 file type. Does anyone know why this is? Thanks!     - Proj 2003. Adjusting task duration according to Resource Availabil I am using Microsoft Office Project Professional 2003. I have defined my project, added all the tasks with expected durations, and organised all these tasks into phases. All the durations were calculated at the planning stage based on a single resource working 100% of their time on the task. All the task are 'Fixed Unit' type and 'Effort Driven'. I am now at the stage where I want to setup and assign the available resources, and I have run into a couple of problems. I am anticipating that a proportion of the resources assigned to the project will be working at about 80% productivity. It seemed that the easiest way to represent this information in Project was to open up the Resource Information for the pertinent resources and change their 'Resource Availability' to 80%. However, when I assign a resource with a lower than 100% availability to a task, it does not adjust the duration accordingly. It seems to be making the assumption that the duration was initially calculated with the lower availability in mind. If you then change the resource to someone with a different 'Resource Availability' it does change the duration. I had a read through the help - and although I couldn't ascertain for certain, I believe this is the intended behaviour? I made the assumption this was the case, and tried an alternative approach. I changed the Resource Availability back to 100% via the Resource Information dialogue. On the Gantt Chart I then assigned this resource to the relevant tasks. I then went back to the Resource Information and changed the Resources Availability down to 80%. The task duration did not change - I had to re-assign the same resource manually to get it to update correctly. I couldn't find anyway of getting the task duration to update automatically when changing the availability of a resource. I even tried levelling - and this just reported it as an error. I would be surprised if this was the expected behaviour? Can you recommend an alternative approach, or an option I may be missing? The numbers are defined in the Value List.     - Problem with alignment of project web page Hi, I have an .mpp file I am trying to save as web. I click save as web, use existing map and the "Who does what", and the web page is created. The issue is that the "resource and assignment" column is aligned to the right instead of to the left.     - PWA activity not auto populating We recently implemented a project 07 server including project web access (PWA). I am trying to create an activity or proposal in PWA. I enter all of the required information in summary information and then begin entering information on the work details screen. When I enter a new task, it should populate with the line number 1,2,3, etc. and I cannot enter the number manually. If I try to save the work details without the number assignment, I receive the following error, "Failed to enable constraints.     - maximum lines in project??? I have a user that has a project that is around 900 to 1000 lines. sometimes when she opens it some of the lines are missing under the task name section of the project, sometimes they are not. the next time she opens it she may be missing lines under something else and the ones that were missing before are there. The project is password protected and only two users have access to it. I know with Excel there is a certain amount of lines you can have before it starts acting goofy. Is project the same? Does anyone know how many lines you can have before you start having issues? I had heard from someone that if you get a project around 1k lines, it will start to have problems, but I do not know for sure.     - work time vs. calendar time I'm using Project to manage several contracts I have - I have prepared Gantt charts for each. I want the bars in my Gantt charts to represent the general span of days I have to do a task, so I enter start date and end date accordingly. For example, I may have a task called "Research Speakers" that I have two weeks to undertake, starting June 1 through to June 14. This, of course, generates a Duration for this task of 14 days However, I've really only got a budget of 12 hours for this work, and somehow I'd like this displayed on the chart, to remind myself to not go over budget. I dont' know exactly when in the 2 weeks that I'll expend the 12 hours, and frankly don't need this displayed. I do the work on the task when I can, based on committments to other projects.     - "Actual Duration" - behavior!! I have a somewhat philosophical (or perhaps design related) question. If I spent 3 days last week working on a task, I would expect to see 3 days worth of â??Actual Durationâ?? on the task, summary task as well as at the project summary level (assuming no other work was done on the project). However, it appears that â??Actual Durationâ?? at Summary Tasks and Project Summary Task is calculated based on the â??% Completeâ?? field. While that may sound logical, it does create some odd results. For example, if I create a project with 2 summary tasks each with 2 detailed tasks. Then, track 3 days of actual duration against my first detailed task, my 3 days of actual duration on the task translates into 1.67 days at the Summary Task and 1.77 days at the Project Summary Task. In other words, someone looking at the project level would get the impression that less than 2 days of work was completed, when that is in fact not the case. To make matters worse, the numbers will change when I create dependencies on the project. While I understand the mathematical formula of â??Actual Durationâ?? = â??Durationâ?? * â??% Completeâ??, I believe itâ??s a mistake to perform this calculation on the Summary Tasks and the Project Summary Task, especially so when Iâ??ve entered â??Actual Durationâ?? and not â??% Completeâ??. In my opinion, â??Actual Durationâ?? on the Project Summary Task should roll up similar to how the â??Durationâ?? field does. Any thoughts would be appreciated. As you know: WORK VARIANCE = WORK - BASELINE WORK However, they insist that I should create a custom field that calculates: *custom field name* = ACTUAL WORK - BASELINE WORK While I have no problems creating this, it seems like a worthless metric to me, especially when you already have the work variance field. Work variance helps you see what is exceeding your work baseline, sometimes before it even happens. Bill,
As far as I know there is no simple way to force Project to open a file
at the current date, although an Open Event macro could do it.
Meanwhile, I'll offer an alternative. After opening the file go to
Edit/Go To... and enter the current date.
