    - connection failure to microsft project server 2003 Hi, I try to connect from a workstation running microsoft project pro 2003 to a server running microsoft project server 2003 but it fails everytime. I've tried connecting using both a windows account and a project account. The error reads: "unexpected server response, project server has received an unexpected response. Does the server and workstation both have to be in the same windows domain or can the workstation be a member of the domain and the server a standalone server in a workgroup?     - "Must Start On " tasks Critical? I have a project and I have formatted the Gantt so the critical path is visible (with red bars).     - Resource Usage view: The summary value of work for resource can't be right. OK, I'm stumped on this one. I've got a project that is contains months worth of work. When I look at at it in the Resource Usage view, it's summarized as follows: Joe 72h New Year Kickoff Meeting 1d Usability Testing - Round 2 1d Database Class Design 3d Database Class Implementation 5d Design and Code Encryption 1d 256 Color Toolbar 1d Fix Icons/Masks 1d Monitor UI Design 1d Monitor Research Issues 5d [etc etc etc... I've got about 3 times as many tasks than are shown here.] How can the summary for Joe add up to 72 hours when clearly there is so much more here listed in terms of work on the tasks.     - New tasks defaulting to unexpected dates Usually (depending on configuration) new tasks default to the start date of the project. I have a MS2002 plan where (apparently out of the blue) new tasks have started defaulting to a different future date which is neither the start or end of the project (actually 12-feb-04). Because the date is in the future the task doesn't react as required to dependencies on other tasks i.e. a new task which is made dependant on another task in the plan with a completion date in advance of say end January will have a start date of 12-feb-04. The task properties appear ok i.e. there are no dependencies and the constraint type is 'as soon as possible'. Also the scheduling options haven't changed i.e. new tasks start date is set to project start date. The task can be forced to start on an earlier date by use of task constraints (e.g. must start on) but that isn't a solution. The problem also seems to depend upon the location of the new task within the plan. If entered towards the top of the plan, the default dates are as expected, but if inserted further down the plan the behaviour described above is exhibited. The problem may be related to constraint dates. In testing I have observed that the problem appears to start happening following the display of a scheduling conflict message.     - resource over allocation between projects I have multiple individual projects inserted into a main "Current" work load project. With-in each individual project, over allocation hours are flagged in red. However, in the "Current" project, I can't seem to get over allocation to be identified between individual projects if I happen to schedule two or more projects with the same resource concurrently.     - Starting date How can I change the starting date for a complete project? I have built-up a project chart, starting on Feb 2004, the last activity being in september. The chart contains several linked activities. I hope it should be possible to easily shift the whole project, e.g. move the start date to april 2004.     - COM+ Error I'm a newbie to Project Server 2003 and WSS v2.0 and have been running into a few problems. I've read thru many threads and tried many different solutions with no luck. I'm currently trying to get PSCOMPlus.exe to work again so I can fix another problem I'm having with Project server sites being created in WSS. Two days ago everything worked great, and the only thing I can think of that would of caused this mess was synchronizing admin and normal users thru PWA. I've used PSCOMPlus before without problem and have double checked that my OLAP & WSS accounts & passwords & domain are setup correctly. OLAPAdmin is a member of Administrators, Users & OLAP Admin & WSSAdmin(sts) account is a member of Administrators & Users. When I try to run COM+ I get "A General com administration error has occurred. Check the provided usernames and passwords". When I look into the event viewer I see errors about DTC Transaction Manager but when I try to restart it doesn't allow me too. One thing that I did that may have screwed things up was in the SharePoint Central Admin I "Set SharePoint Administration Group" to my domain and user.     - Project 2003 - global.mpt I just installed Project 2003. First time I open it I get an error stating - Project cannot find global.mpt. Run set-up and click on fix installation. I did that but I still get the same error up when I open Project. When I click pass the error, Project opens so I created a schedule and saved it. Delete the task - then all planning information is lost 2. Leave the task alone - then it continues to appear in filters of uncompleted tasks 3.     - WBS Code Changes When Successor Tasks Added I have Microsoft Project 2000 SR-1. I have a master project with several sub-projects. In one of the sub-projects I have linked one of its tasks to two successor tasks that are in the main project. When I did that the WBS code of the predecessor task (the one in the subproject) was incremented by one for each successor dependency. That is, it was 4 to begin with and is now 6.     - Determining Slack Time Available Is there any way to determine the Slack Time available by resource? For example, I have a Software Development project plan with about 12 resources. Some are assigned multiple task items. The critical path is the task that must be done on time or the project will be late. But some of the other resources that may have multiple task items will be done with all of their assigned task 7 days before the code phase due date. Everyday, I provide management with a report that shows how much slack time each developer has left during the coding phase.     - MS Project Problem! Hi there - Has anyone ever come across an error in a MS Project schedule like this one: I have tons of tasks and resources, etc. Schedule is baselined and I have been statusing fine for the past few months. I want to enter some additional tasks at say task ID line 212. I hit Insert and enter one new task line just fine. When I tried to enter the next one - it tells me "No calculations can be completed at this time due to circular reference". Circular link relates to task 99 (not task ID 212 or even close to that task ID number ) because a successor is creating the circular link. To solve I am supposed to click on task 99 and and to unlink predecessors and successors". When I look at task ID 99, there is no successor or predecessor ID listed AT ALL for that task! I even went to those columns and hit backspace to get rid of anything I may not be seeing for some reason. So now because it won't calculate, if I try to link task ID 213, 214 etc Finish-Start to 212, it shows a link but the start date is the start date of the project, not following the end date of 212!     - Can You Improve on this Date Calc? Hello: I have created a custom date field with the formula below to calculate the cycle in which a task finishes. The Date8 column contains a date which indicates the start of the first cycle. I have a companion formula to calculate in which cycle a task starts. The problem is this. Every other cycle, the results are inaccurate IF the task starts or finishes on a Sunday which is the last day of the cycle. The results of the calculation will push that day into the next cycle, not its current cycle. Cycles are 2 weeks long, From Monday to Sunday. The "+.99" was added to get the calculation to become even this accurate. Without it, the results are wrong much more often. I want the formula to calc 100% accuracy 100% of the time. Can you help?     - Flat vs. Contouring Hello: we are experiencing the problem of task dates overlapping by one day. It occurs seemingly unpredictably. I have even manually made the corrections in the shared resource pool resource usage view. I have recently analyzed the "Contouring" that project has apparently applied. Now I'm wondering if after making the manual changes, I must change all the contoured tasks to "flat" assignment type. THis is of course for those we are not contouring (using as soon as possible, single resource, fixed units, et al). Can you offer a solution to these? Also, please lend some insight as to how the contouring works. When does Project automatically add it? (I haven't manually added any contouring to these tasks.) Is changing these to "flat" assignment type the answer to solving the overlapping tasks? (Task2 starts on same day Task1 finishes, when Task2 is pred, and work is denoted in full day units.)     - PSMIGRAT error Hi, I am currently upgrading a MSP 2002 instal to 2003, the MSP server and SQL server will remain in Window 2k while the WSS will be placed on a new 03 Server. When I run the PSMIGRATE on the Win 2K server I get the following error message - File or assembly name Microsoft.Sharepoint, or one of its dependencies, was not found. We have made sure we have Office XP SP2 and OWS1002.exe installed as well as the .Net framework. I have run the upgrade script on the Project Server, uninstalled MSP 2002 but not touch STS. I have installed WSS on the 03 Server and run the WSSWIZ.exe. I notice that in the .Net Configuration that Microsoft.Sharepoint is not listsed!
