project 2003 on Win98?
I have a really old machine that's running Win 98 - I'd
prefer to not upgrade the OS, but I'd like to buy MS
Project, the current version of which appears to only
support Win2K or XP. Does anyone know if it's possible to

Problems installing Project 2003
Purchased copy of project 2003. Insert CD, install
begins. Error message "Error opening installation log
file. Verify that the specified log file location exists
and is writable". Have no idea what that means. I
haven't specified anything - it's on autorun and works
fine on another machine. Online help beyond useless -
apparently, on the drop down list, I've bought something
that does't exist, and unless you can click on product
names and enter product numbers - none of which it
allowed me to do as I couldn't identify it - you end up
in a somewhat circular and very frustrating loop.

I am currently using bootvis to attempt to resolve an issue I have in XP.
When boot, I am getting a delay of 93 seconds after I log in. Bootvis
shows me that there are several processes initializing after login. How can
I identify which of thwse processes are essential, since they do not appear
in any startup program, such as Startup Cop, TweakXP Pro, or others. any

Combining Multiple Projects
Hi All
I am new to MS Project and I am using Project 2003. I have a question about
combining multiple projects. Is it possible to have the tasks from each
project (or subproject) shown in a different colour, or displayed with a
prefix (e.g.:project 1 task name, project 2 task name) when viewed in
calander mode?

Im trying to set up ms project pro 2002. It keeps asking about the path for
the project server. I found that project server spooler but cant figure out
if thats what I need. Does that allow me to share what project is showing? I
also have an Intranet for the office that I would like to share these
projects on.
Last question, Is there a way to connect ms project to another database and
have the other database update the time spent on a project? ODBC
connectivity is what Im looking for here.

Actul Work / Work - changes duration
Hi
I've noted that if I go back to a task and try to change the hours MS
Project provides a warning "The resource is assigned outside the original
dates for task 1 ... blah blah in project. The duration of the
fixed-duration task will change to accommodate the resource assigned."
In my project MS Project assigns resource automatically. Therefore, if a
fixed-duration task for a period of 1 day requires 16 hours MS Project will
assign 2.0 / 200%.
However, if I try to change the number of hours or if the actual working
time is greater, MS Project plays with the duration rather than the resource
allocation.
I'm sure this is a standard issue, and I should like (Steve suggests in my
previous post) know more about the resource on the project... But given the
task is fixed-duration, I would have assumed the resource allocation would
increase accordingly to ensure the completion date is not compromised.
I'm doing something wrong (again)?

Now the real deal, I'm trying to write a formula to generate a day calculation based on the finish date of a task and the start date of "task 1". Recurring Tasks without a set pattern
I am wanting to create a recurring task that does not have
a set pattern, like Tuesday and Thursday one week then
only Monday the next, Wednesday the next, etc. Is there a

Updating Actual Work
Hi-
I work in a software development company. We have a custom-developed
software package (called BTR) to track enhancement requests/bugs for our
software products. Our developers log the time they spent working on the
enhancement requests/bugs into this custom system. We log out time in here
because there are financial reports that this system generates for costing
purposes.
For each new release of our software, we take the list of enhancements/bugs
from BTR and create an MS Project file to manage the project. Each
enhancement/bug fix is a task in MS Project. Every week we run a report out
of BTR to get the actual values worked on the different enhancements and
hand update the actual work values in the Project file.
There has got to be a better way.
1) Can MS Project import actual work values from a text file?
2) Can you access the Project database programmatically to add the actual
work data?
Also, if option 2 is the better method, can someone recommend some good
resources on MS Project development?

Wrong Finish Dates?
I'm running project 2000. I've got a resource that I have set up as 40%
available (using Max Units on the resource sheet). I assign this resource
to a 40 hr task. Project computes the finish date as if the resource was
100% available to the project. What am I doing wrong? I've tried
levelling, but that doesn't seem to help.

Wrong work in summary tasks
I have installed Project 2000 and I have the following
problem: In summary tasks the calculation of the work
does not consider the allocation of resources to the own
task summarize (but, it does it for the calculation of
the costs). Also, the calculation of working hours for
the global of the project is erroneous (by excess, more
of the double of the real one).
I've installed the SP1 but the problem continues.
Any idea?

Ok, I am familiar with MS Project and all but I came
across an interesting problem.
I wish I could post a screen print on here to show the
problem but since I can't I'll try to describe it.
I like to keep my scedhules a flexable as possible so I
try to keep all tasks as start as soon as possible and
just link them. That way if I increase time for one task
the entire schedule moves out. Now, I have run into a
problem were I'll have to use a start on date on one task
and the program does not move the rest of the tasks out
like it should. I have the tasks linked but the dates do
not change based on the previous task that is contrainted
to start on a certain date. Has anyone else found this
problem?

I am attempting to setup MS Project Server 2003 with MS
Project Pro 2003. I followed the
configuration/installation for both Project and MS Portal
Server 2003. Both are setup on a Windows 2003 Enterprise
Server. All seemed to go well, I can hit the Project
Server web interface from a remote pc and perform admin
tasks without errors, however when I try to connect to the
server from project, I am getting the following error:
The following file(s) have been blocked by the
administrator: /isapi/pjdbcomm.dll
I checked the file permissions and all users have
read/read&execute on the file and full permissions on the
isapi directory. I tried to search the help and could not
find an error for this. Can anyone elaborate on this to
tell me what I am doing wrong?

beginner: difficulties with timeline
I have entered all my tasks into Project 2000, entered my resources and
allocated them to the tasks. I also set a few predecessors for those tasks
that rely on others to be completed first. What I expected was that Project
would start a new task "as soon as possible" without overallocating
resources. But instead of doing that, all my resources are hopelessly
overallocated. I didn't change the start-times or end-times, all I changed
was the duration of each task.
Any idea where I'm going wrong?

Dependencies between different projects
I am trying to create dependencies between differnet
projects.
This seems to work fine if the projects exist within the
same folder. However, if a project exists within a
different folder, I cannot seem to get it to work.

actual hours appearing on weekend days
Hi all
Running Project Pro 2002, Project server and PWA
I have accepted the standard working calendar of Mon - Fri, but have
made slight modifications to the hours as we work 9 - 5.30.
My chaps are entering their hours via PWA.
I have requested that they enter their hours weekly.
For some reason now the actual hours they report are appearing on
weekend days, I checked with the chaps who told me that some of their
actual hours were more than the estimated hours, so that may be the
reason.
Whatever the reason is, is there a way to stop the hours appearing on
the weekend?

task completion
Using P2003 & PWA
I am using hours logged per day on a task. As soon as the schedule (hours)
equal the (actual hours) then tasks are considered completed and gets a tick
next to the item. Is there any way that I can prevent the completion taking
place eg. for a monthly job catcher project. This task is amongs others
that do have determined hours tasks.
I put another custom column in to indicate a percentage of the work complete
to indicate to me when the task is complete but are there any other ways?

hyperlink a doc the link is displayed the normal underscored way but

I am new to MS Project and want to ensure when I set up my project it
provides the maximum scheduling / budgeting / reporting flexibility to meet
with the changing demands of the project I have a theoretical question
about the most flexible method to assign resource. I understand the
resource can be assigned as follows:

Hi,
Active in the meeting industry, I am confronted with
projects that are very intense over a few days.
Intense is , that I need to make tasks duration of only 15
min. This is possible but inserting a task with minutes as
a nessecary duration is not easy/
MS projects (at least in its stantards settings) is not
flexible for this.
Does anybody use MS project for this purpose (tasks with
minutes as duration)?
Is the user interface extentable with minutes as timeline?

when I add the actual work hours on the Task Usage View, I
have a problem of changing finish date field for the same

Microsoft Pro 2002 Client against Project Server2003
Hi,
we are trying to configure for a customer a mixed environment with
Project Pro 2002 on the client side and Project Server 2003 on the
server side.
After installing and having changed the Global Permission to allow
connection from Project 2002 we are trying to configure the clients,
when we connect from Project Pro to Project Server we get the
following message:
Cannot connect to Project Server. Project server was unable to
Microsoft Project Server was unable to process the specified
enterprise resource.

1) Populated the tasks in the resource work window below the gantt chart
(split screen)
2) Updated the tasks in the tasks usage to show an increase from the
baseline and to ensure durations did not change (as per previous post)
Question:
3) Rem. Work (does this "remaining work") in the resource work view is still
8h / 21h respectively. How or where do I input the actual physical hours
done. When I inputed the data in the Task Usage I assumed this is what I
was doing - but as there are still Rem. Work I must be incorrect. I have a
feeling I am getting confused what screens are executing which task.
Having updated the Task Usage sheet with over-runs (more hrs than scheduled)
I expected to see the '% Complete' bar activated on the Gantt Chart. I am
assuming the Task Usage is another plan of task as opposed to the executed
time on tasks.

Actual work altering task durations
Hi All,
When I populate the actual work complete there will be ocassions when it is
greater than the baseline causing a variance (over budget). The work column
increase to reflect the actual data [I understand this].
However, I do understand why the above would alter the duration / period of
the task from 5 days to 5.35 days especially as I have chosen the task type
is 'fixed duration'.
In one scenario, I have a task requiring two departments, each consumes 40
hrs across a period of 5 days. Project automatically populates the resource
requirement (this is fine as I do not know the max resource in the
department). I have tried checking / unchecking the effort driven option
when testing but it makes no difference.
I would appreciate any assist or guidance on this matter.

Basic Time Tracking for Software Dev. Projects
Microsoft Project is driving me crazy - please help.
I would like to setup MS Project for tracking time for our Software
Development Projects. This is what I want:
- I want to assign tasks to developers
- I want them to know which tasks are assigned to them.
- I want to estimate the time for each task and set this estimate in
stone.
- I want the developers to track their time on each task on a daily
basis.
For example, on monday, they worked on TaskA, 4 hours. Task B, 4
hours.
- I want them to tell me when they are done with a particular task.
- I want to see that they worked MORE or LESS than the original
estimate.
- I want to print a report at the end of each week that shows:
All of our active projects
Who worked on these projects
How many hours they worked on these projects on SUN MON TUE WED THUR
FRI SAT
THAT'S IT!!!
How do I do this!?
Here is what I tried:
We have a Project Server, Sharepoint, etc.
I open up the MS Project Fat Client and I follow the very nice wizard.
I create a project, tasks, assign resources from the server, etc. I
have time tracking set to: "Hours of work done per day or per week"
The tasks I create are effort driven. I set the duration for "4
days". I assign myself as the resources for the tasks.
I create a baseline.
I publish everything to Project Server.
I go to Project Web Access. I click on "Tasks" to see the Timesheet
view. I see that I can edit the "Remaining Work" field and the
"Actual work" for each day.
Everything is very, very confusing from here. Project Web Access
automatically "checks off" the task as complete when the developer
exceeds the time estimate. Sometimes Project automatically adjusts
the "Work" field. All of a suddent the Fat Client pops up and shows
some information that makes no sense...
I want to make this as simple as possible. I want to remove
unecessary, confusing fields and features.
BOTTOM LINE:
What are the settings I need?
On the fat client:
- What columns should I show on the "Gant Chart" View?
- What columns should I show on the "Task usage" View?
- What columns should I show on the "Tracking Gantt" View?
On Project Web Access:
- What columns should I show on the "Timesheet" View?
- What columns should I show on the "Gantt Chart" View?
- What columns should I show on the "Updates" View?
- What columns should I show on the "Project Center"
Is there a set of Views I can just download and install? This
application is crazy. We are a standard software development shop.

Row Height Issues
I couldn't agree more with Patricia - there is something here that is very fickle about MS Project
I inherited a project from another manager and I have put together a schedule for another project that I am starting, so we have two separate MS projects (Gantt)
In the project that I have put together, I can see 21 rows and it's just how I like it; in the one I inherited - 11 rows. I have tried modifying text size but it serves to make it illegible. The true variable I would like to change here (as I am sure is the case with Patricia) is the % of the cell that the text takes up. It seems that there is a vast amount of room in the cell for the text to fit, but the program somehow insists that the row height be 2.5 times the height of the text. So, ultimately, yes, changing the font size does allow a slight reduction in row height, but you suffer horribly in legibility
Does this clarify things for anyone who would be able to help

Resource Theory - Variant of previous question
If I have a project that will require 4 men onsite for 8
hours to complete a project in one day, and I enter 32
hours as the required labor at their company rate, Project
expands my timeline to appear that the task will take 4
days, when it will only take one.
I will be using this company (furniture installers)
several times during the project, each with a different
labor force that day depending on the scope for that
phase. What is the best way to enter this.

How do you set the predecessor of a task to be the task
from another sub-project in the same master project plan?
For example, I have sub project 1 and 2 both linked in

Several Questions
I teach MS Project basics (among other MS applications)
and had some questions in my class today that I am hoping
someone can help me with. Thanks in advance.
1. One of my students wants to be able to track the
changes that she makes to her project plan...and to get as
detailed as entering reasons why she has made those
changes. Any suggestions?
2. Is there a way for the project manager to define tasks
as "critical" (different from using Project's definition
of critical)? Even if is is color coding specific tasks?
3. How can I track "extra" costs incurred during the
project? For instance, I have a task in my project to set
up a cash register system in my store. I hire an outside
company to come in and do this. When they come, the
register is not there yet. They charge me a fee just for
showing up. Yet the task is not yet complete and they will
still charge me the original cost when they come back to
do the work. Where can I track this.

"Work" field in Resource Usage View
Something is happening that I really don't understand and
can't find anything written on it:
I have a large (>1000 lines) Master project - all
subprojects included unlinked - When I show the Resource
Usage View, the left panel shows Name (resource, then
task) and a column for 'Work'. The right panel shows
hours planned (by month in the case I'm working). Some of
the Resources show Work on the same line that is the sum
of work in all the tasks assigned. Some resources show
work assigned, but 0 (zero) hours in the 'Work' summed for
the resource. Some resources show some hours
in 'Work'assigned, but clearly not as much as is entered
in the tasks. I checked and Calculation is on Auto.
Any help?

Drop down box dissappeared
I created a spreadsheet and used several Validation lists with drop down boxes. I then decided to add this particular spreadsheet to another work book using Edit, Move or Copy sheet. I need to be able to combine the "Should Start By" filter with a Less than filter. How can I do this. I need to combine the 2 filters into one filter so that I can save the information into another format. Linking resource pool to Master or Sub Project?
I want to use a master project with separate sub-projects
for each development release I am managing. Since these
releases overlap, I can add new releases and drop off
releases that are now close.
I also use a common resource pool. All of the sub-
projects will use the same resource pool file. Do I link
the master project file to the resource pool? Which would
make each sub-project file automatically be linked to the
pool file. Or do I need to link each individual sub-

Schedule, while in the Resource Usage view, my column
heading of "Project" that I included in front of the

Use of hyperlinks
I am using MS Project 2002. I do not have the Proj server. I need to link multiple docs to a task. There is only one hyperlink field. Is there a way, other than inserting a task item for each document, to display multiple hyperlinks per task item? I could use the notes field, but I wanted to keep it as simple as possible. Jessica,
If you mean resource assignments per task, the specification for Project
does not say. It may vary somewhat depending on which version of Project
you are using, but for Project 2000 these are the limits with regard to
tasks and resources:
Tasks per project file: 1 million
Resource per project: 1 million
Resource units per assignment: 10,000 or 1 million percent.
