    - Project 2003 I have looked at Knowledge Base Article 329738 that refers to an issue in Project 2000 regarding 'Hide these specified drives in My Computer' and 'Prevent access to drives from My Computer'. That is, these are restricted in a Group Policy but Project allows you to view them anyway. This issue seems to be present in Project 2003 as well.     - Calculating both ends of a project I have a series of tasks that are date dependent. I would like to set dependencies so that if I set the start date of the first task, it would calculate everything in the middle and then the end date to the last task. However, if I set the end date to the last task, I would also like the same calculation to occur for all the middle tasks back to the first task. I tried doing this, but could not because the middle tasks can not be both a predecessor to the same task that it depends on. Is there anyway I can accomplish this? Thanks for the help.     - How to prevent splits I am getting a lot of splits in my projects. Project seems to calculate the tasks and put splits in without my knowledge. I am sure there's a setting that I inadvertently set that allowed this behavior. Would somone tell me what I would need to do in order to stop Project from calculating and putting splits into the tasks without me knowning? Greatly appreciate the help.     - How Does Project calculate I would like to know when and how Project does its calculations. My resources sometimes change the order of the tasks they're doing. Sometimes, a later task starts before the earlier task. When this occurs, I enter the percent complete into the later task. When I open up the project again, the end date seemed to have been recalculated based on the percent completed and the remaining duration. Unfortunately, when I try to repeat this to see how Project calculates, it doesn't. As if it only calculates when there's been some time passed since the last time the project was opened. I know that Project calculates when the acutal finish (or 100% complete) has been entered. But I am seeing that it sometime calculates on percentages as well.     - Project Compare Can someone point me to get more information on Project Compare? After I do the project compare, I would like find out what tasks has been moved from one resource to another. Unfortunately, when I filtered on the resource, it only shows me the tasks currently assigned to the resource, not the ones that have been unassigned.     - Initials and Gantt Bars I am running MS Project 2000. The default gantt bar label for resource is "Resource Name". You can manually change any bar label; in particular, you can change the resource to "Resource Initial". Is there any way to do that for all bars either as a default condition or via some "apply to all" approach?     - Using resource pools Hi, I've been experimenting with using resource pools, and am having some problems. I've got a database set up with some plans already there, and a resource pool. I've been trying to import an existing plan, and attach it to the pool, but when I do so I find that task durations change (generally getting shorter) I identified that this was partially down to different standard calendar definitions between the two files - the resource pool had a 7.5 hour day, and the plan had an 8 hour day.     - couple of rookie questions I am setting up my 1st ever project ... now I have tasks that will be done by more than two people, and I can't seem to find a way to split up the total time in the correct proportion. For example, Task 1 requires employee A to give 4 hours and employee B to give 8 for a total of 12. In the task lisT I put down 12 hrs and simply assigned A and B to it. Since A and B have different rates I need to assign the proportion of work. Secondly do you guys know of any good books I could read to get knowledge of MS Project REALLY FAST?     - Staffing gaps between activities We have a large fixed-bid project we're staffing. Because it's fixed bid, we need to account for hours spent between activities. So if I'm on Activity1 from M - Th in Week 1 and Activity 2 runs W - F in Week 3, we need to account for F in Week 1, all of Week 2, and M - T in Week 3 as I will be on the project for numerous miscellaneous tasks. Folks, The standard configuration of Project 2002 set by the IT dept of a current client did not include the VBA Help File which provides context-sentive "help" on Project's VBA and functions. Normally this is set in a selection in Project's setup program. They have developed a standardized install program that does not include this. They are unwilling to adjust this standard install program to include this file, and they are unwilling to provide access to the Project setup disk for those who need/want this file installed. (Apparently the thousands of people who have installed Project without this file haven't yet noticed). I can't spot the actual file which provides this functionality.     - Gantt chart disappeared This is very bizzare, but as I was working in one of my project plans in Gantt view the gantt charts disappeared along with all the date headings. Gone!     - Can't view consolidated (sub) project task bars in overall calenda I have been creating consolidated projects where the parent project has several sub-projects inserted into the parent. I can obviously expand and view all project task that include sub-project tasks in the Gantt view. BUT...I can find no way to get the consolidated parent project calendar view to show the sub project task bars with the parent projects task bars that DO show in the calendar view.     - Task Assignments Hi I am using project xp trying to get to grips with the e- mailing options. I have set my project file for e-mail collaboration. I am running through the feature of Task assignments. I selected my task assigned my resource collaborate - publish - new and changed assignments selected to send only changed assignment modified the message text ok to send the mail the e-mail has been received by the correct resource with my modified text in as well as an attachment of mspj.mtm but i cannot open it as the le type os not recognised. In the project file i sent it from the task is showing that my task request has not been a response to the publish assignment message. Can anyone please advise on what to do next??     - Summary Fields not Re-calculating correctly. Is there ANY way to re-calculate the Summary tasks?!! They work at first, then after subseuqent changes are made, they quit summarizing. I know there are posts here about this issue, but surely there is a fix somewhere. I'm using MSP 2000, but the same issue arises in 2002. I've tried changing the rollup options, turning calculation to auto and manual and vice versa and no luck. This is a true show stopper for any kind of real functionality when using custom fields.     - View Resource Assignments When I try to "View Resource Assignments", specific to a particular job, I have a resource showing up that was removed from that job. There is an "X" in the indicator field that shows that he was removed. The problem is that when I export the grid to Excel that information does not translate and I am left with, what amounts to, incorrect resource information.     - synching predecessor and successor dates based on F-S link Hi folks, I'm working with MSP2003 and PS2003. I have a project with afew tasks that have predecessor - successor relationships. They are F-S. Some have a lag, some have a lead time, some have neither. The issue I have is that when the finish date changes for a predecessor task, the start date for the successor remains unchanged. I've checked the calculation settings and it is set to recalculate automatically. For example Task 115 is a predecessor for task 117. T115's end date is June 28. T117's start date is June 30.     - looping task relationship I have a client who does development work. They have a number of tasks with what I call "looping" relationships. Like Develop/Test. Development starts on a certain day. Test starts a day or 2 later (SS+2). But Development and test essentially end the same day, however long that may take (that's another issue, estimating such durations). In older versions of Project, I could cut and paste start dates and end dates to create more complex links between tasks, such as this loop. I haven't done this in several years, and was surprised to find I can't do it in Project 2003. I do remember that doing this could cause instability at times. Maybe that's why it's not allowed now. Does anyone have a good way to create this kind of relationship? I also used this same technique to create hammock tasks. Is there a way to do this in P2003? Thanks for the help. David G.     - Template When starting Project, I get window that says Project is unable to use the page gbui://mainpage.htm/ to display the Project Guide for this project. You can either open this project using our default Project Guide, or you can retry using the page gbui://mainpage.htm/. And it has a button to Retry or Use Default. When I click on Retry, the message just comes back, when I click on Use Default, it goes into Project, but when ever I try to open a file, I get the same message. Any idea's?     - Poor performance during tasks adding Hi to all, I'm using the COM Project from my application to add a large number of tasks to a project in which I created many custom fields and outline codes. I create an MSProject.Application instance (called i.e. myproj1) when I load my application and after I loop for each task I need to add calculating the fields of the current task and adding it to the myproj1.Tasks collection at the botton of the loop. This approach has very poor performances when I add a thousand of tasks and causes the crach of my application! I think that the problem could be the call of the add method thousand times..     - Extracting MSP_TIMEPHASED_DATA via ODBC connection to SQL Server Our requirement is to extract the timephased data from the MSP_TIMEPHASED_DATA table stored in SQL Server. After reviewing the ProjDB.HTM project database tables information and examining the actual storage or data in this table it looks like an near impossible job to extract/interpret the data for a DAY by DAY view. Has anyone done this? I have already developed a method to extract the timephased data using the OLEDB provider for MS Project which presents task, assignment and resource views of data at all time levels (i.e. minute, hour, day, etc..) This works really well and we have developed a solution that meets our requirements perfectly from this data source. However, this method requires the MS Project be installed on the Workstation/PC (i.e. the OLEDB provider is installed by MS Project). The problem with this is that ALL users(clients) or our application software will require MS Project to be installed to be able to view this data. Whilst it is NOT MANDATORY to have MS project installed to run our software there will be certain aspects of our software which cannot be used unless MS Project is installed. We use the autofilter on the Client Name column to show just the activities for particular clients. This is great until we save it as a web page and it ignores the filter and shows everything.     - % Complete, etc. ok, I've inserted a custom field that is just a number field for Physical % Complete. The reason I'm not using the Project provided field for this is because of the way that actual hours and remaining hours are directly affected by Phys. % complete. Here's the idea (then I'll tell you the problem): This allows resources to say that they are %50 complete for example, when they have used either less or more than %50 of the planned hours. They can also say that even though they are %50 percent complete they have more than % 50 of the planned hours remaining in order to finish the task (let's say the last half of the work is more complex than the first half or they realize it's going to take longer because of some other issue). We like this flexibility and it tells us everything we need to know about a given task. problem: Since it's a custom number field, the percentages don't "roll up" so you can't see how much complete the overall project is. And also, if a resource does not consume all of the hours estimated for the task, I believe that the resource allocations will continue to show that resource allocated against the task even though it is actually completed. It seems to me that we either have to get the PMO Physical Complete % to update in a similar way as the % Complete or we may have to use the standard % Complete instead. Anybody have any ideas??? added a task to another PM's project, assigned a resource
to this task, as well as published it. The task shows up
in the Proejct 2003 Client version, but NOT on the server
(PWA)- I have respublished it and still nothing?

What am I doing wrong?
