What determines a red resource in resource usage view?
I have several resources that are showing "red" for overallocated in the
Resource Usage view. The standard calendar and working time show a 40 hour
work week. However, the resources in question only show work allocated to
them in the 18 to 25 hours per week. But they still show as overallocated.
Compounding my concern is that other resources with similar -or less - work
assignments do not show as overallocated.
All resources are 100% to all tasks.

Previous Version of Project or restore from archive
One of the project managers accidently deleted all resources from the project
and checked it into the project server. that project had 360 tasks and around
30 respources with actuals. Task are there but no resources.
How can I go back to a previous version of that project as i have heard
project server has versioning capability. OR How can we restore that project
back from our backup, we do backup every night here.
Any help will be appreciated.

Task is shown starting on a non workind day
I have a task with a task calander assigned to it, with work days
specified from Oct. 31 to Dec. 31st. But the early start for this task
is listed as June 8; which is defined as a non working day for the task
calander. Is there any way to make the early start date and Gnatt

working/non working days in its calculations of finish dates, but it
shows a start date that is defined as a non working day. Can anyone

Changing Start & Finish dates and automatically adjusting Due date
I am new to microsoft Project ($400 training-worthless). I am working on a
project. I have finished one job. Most of my jobs are the exact same all
the way through, but with different ship dates. I want the same durations,
but when I change the Start and finish dates the duration dates do not
automatically adjust. Instead it just shows me being done with the next
project well in advance as it is using the previous projects dates. Is there
any way of NOT entering each start date manually? Tag: View Order in Viewbar Tag: 107769
Changing UNC file/path names in linked projects
I have a set of project files with links to several other files, including a
master project file that contains all of the files and a resource pool file.
They are currently stored on a single directory on a file server.
I would like to move the files to another locations, but the UNC path names
are embeded in the (predecessor and successors) links. I've tried to use
relative path names, but Project converts these to UNC names, including the
server and full directory path.
Is there a quick way I can update all of the links in all of the files so
that I can move them? I know how to do this manually by updating every link
in every file, but there are a couple of hundred all togther.
A related qustion ... I would like to be able to store a "snapshot" archive
of the set of files at a point in time and look at them. I can copy all of
the files into a different directory, but since they all have UNC path names,
when I open the moved files, they link back to the ones in the original
directory. I would like to be able to open them relative to the current
directory. This does not appear to be possible without changing all of the
UNC link file names.

Is there an automatic marking of % complete for milestones?
In my project plan, i have milestones with predecessors. Once those
predecessors are 100% complete, should Project be marking the specific
milestone they are tied with as 100% complete?
I noticed in this user group in late Oct 2005, that Jan you shared
macro code to mark milestones complete based upon previous tasks. I am
asking for a slight twist upon that - i.e., will Project update a '%
complete' field for a specific milestone whose predecessors are 100%
complete?

How can I display link lines for rolled up tasks?
If I choose Format > Layout > "Always roll up Gantt bars" and "Hide rollup
bars when summary expanded," the link lines disappear when the task is rolled
up. I can bring them back by unchecking "Hide rollup bars when summary
expanded," but this results in too much clutter on the screen (i.e. the
duplicate bars get a big confusing).
Is there any way I can either (a) display the link lines for rolled up tasks
while still hiding the rollup bars when the summary is expanded or (b) modify
the formatting of how rolled up bars appear when their summary is expanded
(e.g. making it look just like a standard summary task)? Tag: View Order in Viewbar Tag: 107756
Levelling again
I search in the forum for solution and can't find anwers !
Here is the setup of my project :
- All fixed work
- Lots of links
- MSProject doesn't give me warning of overallocation, so each task is
100% or less
- When auditing, I checked the option - Audit can ajust task
individualy
- Audit is done hour by hour
I execute the project audit and the result is that almost all
resources are overallocating.
I want the tasks to be postpone in the futur.
Can somebody suggest something ?
Thanks in advance

Linking issue when part of a shell?
I have 10 different schedule files, and all of them have links to at least
one other schedule file, and some have links to more than one schedule file.
When I open all of them at once to get the latest date info between the
input/output milestones, everything updates fine. I even verified this by
hitting F9.
If I use what I call a "shell", a standalone project file that has each
schedule linked into it (so as to view all of them in one project file), MS
Project kind of hangs up/keeps calculating as if there is circular logic, but
no error message appears. I have tried isolating the issue by only opening
up no more than 2 schedule files in the shell (I usually collapse all
schedules files, but when expanding more than 1 file, that's when the
calculation starts) to see where I get hang ups, but haven't had much luck.
Any suggestions? Tag: View Order in Viewbar Tag: 107739
Inserting Multiple Projects into a Master -
When I insert two projects into a master Project A & Project B, when the
master is closed and saved and then the project A is opened, it shows project
B inside of it.
This is not the results I was hoping for. Am I doing something wrong?
I tired two ways, the first was inserting the two projects and when i did
this, it appeared that Project A was correct until Project B was inserted
then it appeared tha Project was a indented under Project A which explains
why the project A original file had the project B info on it.
Aince this did not work I tried merely copying and pasting the data from the
indivdual projects intot he master but this looked liek they were not linked
together meaning changes in either dod not report to the other.
I want to be able to "link" Project A & B into the Master so updates of each
project are reported to the master, but I also want the individual projects
to remain indivisual i.e. project A should update if I move a date of project
A in the master, but it should not have any of project B info in project A.

Surpressing task updates when processing timesheets
When processing timesheet updates in PWA, on clicking 'Update All', relevant
schedules are opened in MS Project and the changes are applied. What also
happens is that any pending task updates get automatically sent out (the same
effect as a 'Publish New and Changed Assignments'). Is there any way of
stopping these updates being auto-sent? What I'd like to do issue these
updates selectively (much as you can when choosing 'Publish New and Changed
etc'); not being able to, means a lot of unnecessary updates get sent to
resources - net result being they take less notice of them.
Any clues?
Thanks in advance.

Confused about total slack
I can't figure out how MS Project calculates Total Slack. For most
cases, it's
LS - ES. However, that doesn't always hold. Have googled on this for
hours but can't
find an asnwer.
Here's a simple example:
- add two tasks to a new project, "a", "b"
- make "b" a predecessor of "a"
- add constraint MSO 6/1/06 on "b"
- schedule forward with start date 6/12/06
MS Project 2003 calulcates the following (TS=total slack, FS=free
slack, SS=start slack)
(1) task a: ES=6/12 EF=6/12 LS=5/31 LF=5/31 TS=-8 FS=0 SS=-8
(2) task b: ES=6/1 EF=6/1 LS=6/1 LF=6/1 TS=-8 FS=0 SS=-8
Both tasks have the same slack, even though they have different values
for
LS-ES or LF-EF. Task b has the same dates for ES/EF/LS/LF yet the TS is
not 0.
This shows that TS cannot be computed from just ES/EF/LS/LF.
How does MS Project exactly calculate Total Slack? Anybody have a
formula (the
english explanation in Microsoft Project Help isn't very complete)
Thank's very much! Tag: View Order in Viewbar Tag: 107695

underallocation
i am not sure about naming my subject as underallocation.
i have task = 3h work
it is fixed work
also, only 1 resource is allocated for it
the allocation unit is 100%
and the plan is distributing this work between 2 days as 1.5 h in one day
and 1.5 in the following day.
also, there is no other task assigned in this day to my resource and working
hours are 6.5 h/day
my 1st question is why do the MS project distributed like this instead of
putting the whole 3 h in one day??
the 2nd question when i change the unit of this resource to 200% it is
marked red as overallocated, why is this happening?
please, advise.

I have then adjusted the calendar to reflect the standard working time for

Can't manually move tasks (rearrange)
I did this frequently with no problems up until just now. I suddenly
can't manually move a task. I usually would click the row ID (grey
block) to select the task in the entry table and then release the
mouse, and position the mouse back onto the same row ID block. I would
then get a different cursor shape which allowed me to click and drag
the block up or down and so would move the task higher or lower in the
table.
Suddenly the cursor remains a selection arrow after I initially click
the row ID block. Even after I release the mouse and reposition the
cursor, it stays a selection arrow. Clicking a dragging the row ID
block just selects more rows instead of moving the row.
Did I break something?

How to automatically level resolve under-allocations ?
Hi all,
I'm new here but have been a (periodically frustrated) MSP user for some
time now... One thing that we've always tried to do but never managed to
achieve cleanly is schedule a background task (for example maintenance or
support activity for a software project) that can sweep up resource
availability across the project automatically.
For example if we are a team of 4 developing an iteration of a software
product, and we are also expecting 1 FTE worth of effort across the team to
be dedicated to fixing bugs that come through, I'd like to set up a
background task, assign it 4 resources, and have it 'soak up' any spare
availability from the team.
Or to put it another way, automatic resource levelling would allocate
maximum units to formally planned tasks and any spare units to the 'bug
fixing'. The amount of unti allocation would change as I change the formally
planned tasks. Naturally if there were not enough spare units from the formal
plan to support the desired effort required in the bug fixing task, I'd
expect the schedule to expand accordingly.
The reason we need this is that day to day, developers activities change,
and the only way I can see of achieving the above is to block out one
resource to do the bug fixing at 100% allocation. This makes day to day
tracking enourmously fiddly as a day not spent on bug fixing by this resource
has to be manually re-allocated.
I spotted the use of 'Maintenance and Operations Work' here
http://blogs.msdn.com/dieterz/ but this looks like it's in the enterprise web
based interface for server 2007 - not in project itself...

Non working weekends not working
Folks,
I'm a newbie to Project and I have some challenges using the application. I
have tried and read documentation but nothing seems to be working. That is
why I am sending this.
Scenario: I have tasks that bridge over weekends and instead of the system
to treat them as non working days, it takes them as working days. For
example, I have a task that is for 10 days and starts on 20th, Project tells
me it ends on 28th. That is even 9 days and it counts the weekend days.
All the tasks are using Project Standard calendar.
