    - Project 2003 vs. 2007 - Can I still train them on 2003? Hi everybody. Hope you are all having a good day. Quick question - I have a group of users that currently have Project 2007 installed (they just got it installed). Unfortunately, my lab and curriculum is for 2003. Now, they are just going to be using the most basic elements of project - nothing too, too fancy. Working with tasks, creating resources, printing stuff, views, that's it. They don't have project server or anything of that question. I'm only going to be training them for 3 hours. So, the big question is this - Can I just go ahead and train them on my Project 2003 machines? Or should they wait until I upgrade to 2007.     - VBA type mismatch on GetField Method Hi. I've run into a VBA issue I can't seem to resolve. I'm trying to use the 'GetField' method against a resource object but for various reasons I can't provide the FieldID as a pjField type variable. I do however have a string variable (strPjFieldName) which has the FieldID name I need. Is there a way to typecast from a String variable to a pjField variable? I do not want to code the link between each form field and its respective data field in the resource object individually.     - Customized Unit on Task Duration Hello, I work in an international Enterprise and we use MsProject 2003. We have projects in several countrys so we need to show our clients Gantt charts with the duration units using their local language. We use the english version, so MsP gives me the possibility to show the duration of a task using "d" "dy" ou "day", but I need to be able to show it in, for example, Portuguese "dia". When talking about weeks it's even more diferent, in Portuguese you say "semana" in french "semaine". How can I change this? MsP Options don't allow me to change the text of the units, so I think I'll have to use a custom fielsd. Using a Text custom field and the following formula: [Duration]/480 & " dia", I've managed to show me a customized field where the duration comes with "dia" unit, but I need it to show me the plural of days ("dias") when the durations is bigger than one day, and when the durantion reaaly big, weeks ("semanas").     - Hightlighting when there are multiple milestones on the same day Firstly, forgive me, I'm not very expert at using Project 2007! I have put together a master project from sub projects. Each of the sub projects have milestones which are 'Getting senior management approval' My master project then has each of these sub projects listed in turn, with the relevant tasks and miletones. I have been trying to create different views for the information so that the tasks can be sorted by date and by resosrce. The problem is, how do you do it so that the different outline levels are kept?     - Special Formatting to values in Project 07 Hi all, I'm curious if there's a way to format individual cells in Project 2007 based upon values? For example, I'm doing a calculation in a custom field that shows me the variance difference in last week's remaining work and this week's remaining work. If the variance difference is zero, then I really don't care to pay attention. If the variance is > 1 but < 8 hours, I'd like to highlight the cell background yellow. While if the variance is > 8 hours, then it needs to be red. As close as I've seen is the "text styles" where I could highlight based on "cell changes".     - Copy Picture to Office Wizard in Project sorts resources Hi, I am using Project 2003, trying to generate a PowerPoint slide of my Gantt chart. When I use the Copy Picture to Office Wizard, it re-sorts the rows in my Gantt chart by resource name, which messes up the links between dependent tasks. The re-sort occurs immediately upon clicking the wizard button, and it even modifies the Project itself (once I'm through generating the slide, I go back to the Project and the rows have been rearranged as well). Is there a way to force the wizard to leave things alone and generate EXACTLY my layout and ordering? In the mean time I am using the Copy Picture to generate GIF images.     - Summary task % complete I have a project with about 700 tasks in it. SOME of the summary/rollup tasks do NOT show 100% even though all subtasks are 100% complete I have tried changing the % complete to 100% but it automatically changes back to 99% complete when I click on okay. There are no special constraints and some of the tasks update correctly. I have the options set to calculate automatically and I have no outside dependencies.     - Secured Global.mpt for MSP2007std Hello All, I have several independent installations of MSP2007std. They will be sharing plans and resources, and viewing a master(consolidated) schedule file comprising inserted projects. I want the option settings for each installation to be universal, and that views table etc are common throughout. I also need to take control of the master settings to prevent damage and enforce standards. I think I need to do this to prevent incorrect alendar and resource changes. As far as I can tell some settings are in global.mpt (Options menu items), some are saved in each project file (eg view print settings), and some can be replaced in the file via organizer. I have have noted Rod Gill's suggestion to place global.mpt in a central location and have the MSP shortcuts setting redirect "Start in" to that location. However, that allows the user to modify the original file (some have admin rights). As an alternative, I was considering a batch file that overwrites the local global.mpt with a standardised version, retrieved from a central location. This batch file would be placed in all users' Windows Startup so it would occur each time Windows was started. Any inadvertant changes would then be remedied each startup. Does the location of the local global.mpt vary with updates etc? Does this seem a feasible solution? Is there a better way? Server version is not an option for us. Extra est AUD11000 for three users. I can't seem to get summary taks to display correct durations, and yes, I know it's supposed to be from the start date of the first task to the end date of the last task.     - Page Formatting I have tried a number of suggestions to stretch a schedule's timescale over the full page width of an 11 x 17. As others have found, the font can get incredibly small if the duration of the schedule is excessive. I have been able to overcome this to an extent by changing the font size using Format:Text Style. However, I always seem to get to a point where Project decides to adjust the duration rather than the font size. For instance, my duration is 440 days and my print out is looking pretty good, covering the whole page. I decide to enlarge the font for the column headers and when I next do a print preview, the displayed duration has increasaed to 880 days.     - Project Management Tasks (to be excluded from the critical path) As part of my project, most of the tasks are sequential and inter-linked (as normal). However, I want to have some tasks sit separate from these tasks because they are Project Management (PM) tasks. These tasks exists as "support tasks" to the other tasks. For example, for every week that the project runs, I will need 2 hours a week assigned to the "Project controls and reporting" task. Currently I've got it set up in a basic way. I've budgeted for a 6-week project so my PM tasks are sitting at the top of the Gantt chart as 6-week tasks. However, there are two obvious problems: 1. These tasks are set at 6 weeks, and the total duration of the rest of the project is only about 5.5 weeks at the moment. This means that I am planning to do 0.5 weeks of PM tasks after the project has already finished! How can I restrict the end of this task? I've tried setting up a finish-finish relationship with a "project complete" milestone task (one that is complete once all the functional tasks are complete) but this moves the whole PM task along. This seems strange to me since the task is not "fixed-duration". 2. Because these projects have the latest finish date and start on the project start date, they all make up the critical path. However this doesn't make sense, since they only are running while other tasks are running. How can I exclude them from the critical path calculation? How can I set up Project like this?     - automatic resource assignment I have what I believe to be an extremely common situation. I have a dozen programmers. For the purpose of this question, assume them to be interchangeable. Each has his own availability (due to hiring dates, other projects, ramp-up times) which I think I know how to represent in the resource information. Each also has assorted other obligations (support, review participation, meetings, etc) that I also think I know how to represent as tasks. All of these people are capable of a reasonable degree of multi-tasking. I also have a bunch of new development tasks that need doing, and to a first approximation it doesn't matter who does which of them. I would love to be able to tease Project into assigning tasks to resources, based on the available time that each resource has. I haven't seen a way to do this. I can make my own assignments, but I have to specify how much each person will work on the task. This is not a fixed number ... as each person has a different number of available hours each week (due to availability dates, ramp-ups, and other responsibilities). I would at least like to get Project to apply "the available hours" to a task ... but I cannot find a way to do this either. Essentially, it seems that I have to decide who will work, how much, on each task, starting when ... after which Project will be happy to print beautiful reports. Figuring out who should work, on which task, starting when, seems to be my problem. This seems a pretty common problem (it is one I've had continuously for the last thirty years) and yet I can't find discussions of it, nor have I seen sample projects that seem to address these issues. In a (surely different, but) related problem, I have deliberately assigned only a small fraction of a person to a task (knowing that they will have at least that much time available). Whether the task is fixed unit or fixed work, I often find that applying someone 10% time to a 25 day task, results in them doing four hours per week of work for five weeks after which the task is shown as completed ... Hello Chama,

As you have discovered, tasks (Gantt chart view) and Resources each
have a set of custom fields and a data entered into one side, does not
display in the other field.

See FAQs 37 & 51 at http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm for some
additional information. FAQ # 37 also has two sample macros to copy
data from one field to another.
