    - Start vs. Actual Start??? I'm a relatively new user to MS Project 2007, but have created a nice Gantt Chart for my project complete with Start and Finish dates. I've inserted Actual Start and Actual Finish columns into my chart, but whenever I try to updated the Actual Start date for a task, it changes the Start date. For example, if my Start date for a task was April 1, but I enter the Actual Start date as April 2, my Start date changes to April 2. Note: The Start date is actually more like a scheduled start date, and it seems like tracking my progress would be difficult if the Start and Actual Start dates match up. What am I missing? Thanks.     - Baselining specific tasks DECREASES overall summary costs I am baselining a specific task which should increase the baseline cost of the project. When I baseline the task, Project is decreasing the overall cost by a considerable amount (more than I'm adding). I am using the "Selected Tasks" -> "To all summary tasks" option.     - Help with understanding leveling... MS Project 2003 Hi I am sure there is something very simple here but I am unable to find it. In essence I have created a project with a number of start-finish tasks and these are allocated to resources (people). I have allocated (on the resource details window) 20% and 25% availability as these guiys have to work on other things concurrently. I didn't add any date constraints such as "must complete before" and thought that MS project would simply extend the duration of tasks to enable the required resources to work on them. But oh no - instead the tool seems intent on overcommitting all the resources by 300 even 400%. So I must be doing something fundamentally wrong - why won't project just extend the duration of the tasks? I entered my estimates for the work to be done in the "Work" column.     - Remove filter from "Build Team Dialog" and Ressource Overallocatio Hey people, I really didn't know where to post this since the Build Team from Enterprise-Dialog exists only in connection with Project Server, but anyway. I've been asked whether it's possible to add filters in the Build Team-Dialog (which is naturally possible as it turned out) and to remove unused ones. Is this possible or not to be done using standard methods? Second question relates to ressource assignments and possible overallocations. Is there a way to let Project calculate the minimum amount of days required for a certain amount of work manhours having assigned a specific resource (might be generic) with set units? So I want to evaluate the duration required for a certain task, given work manhours and a resource units. This can be done manually, but can it be done automatically (which would make things a lot easier)? Sounds complicated, but I'm confident you'll get it. I'm looking forward to your answers.     - Macro to import Resource Cost Data - again I know the question "How do I import resource costs into MS Project" has been asked multiple times in this group but I keep seeing people say you'll have to write a macro. Which doesn't really help me that much to be honest because I'm not good enough in VBA to do that. Does anyone actually have a macro, add-in, application or know of a website that has one that does this? At a previous company I worked for they had a home made application that would take the latest forward pricing rates by resource and import them into the selected schedule but that was developed by the IT group.     - New to MS Project Hi All, I am just after a little advice re MS Project. In fact I have 2 issues. The first is that I would like to add a custom cost field on the resource sheet. I currently have a standard rate field, and an overtime field. I have inserted a column and selected various different one, but to no avail. What I want to do is use the standard rate as the resource cost to my company, and have a second rate at which I charge a customer. For example in a consultancy role, my internal cost may be £100, but I may sell a days consultancy at £400. Another issue I am currently having is that I have recently attended a training course (I was obvioulsy not aware of these issue prior to the course!!!), and one of the instruction step by step sheets ask me to open a new project, click the Project Guide toolbar, and click the tasks button (which I CAN find), but it then asks me to select 'Define the Project' link, which I do not have avaialble. I am wondering whether I have some defualt settings set incorrectly. The next step it asks for is to select a date, then at the bottom of the 'SAVE YOUR PROJECT SIDE PANE' click SAVE AND GOTO STEP 2.     - summary projects in a top level paln Hope someone can help with this problem. I have created a new file gantt chart which I have inserted several other projects ( which have rolled up summary detail) This shows the top level summary bar with the rolled up detail for each project.     - How do I get rid of the available hours for the "unassigned" resou I have several projects and small tasks in corporate master project plan that do not have resources assigned (they are for information only). When I go to the Resource Usage tab, the items show up under the Unassigned. And it shows 40 hours of remaining availability for this "unassigned" resource. I've tried to edit "unassigned" to not be available, but MSP 2007 does not allow me to edit the availability. How do I remove this availability so those hours are not counted when I run Resource availability reports? It can add up to hundreds of hours when I run a report for a rolling three-month period.     - Earned Schedule I'm trying to identify metrics that the PMO can use to control this project and I'm having difficulty because the planning team decided to not input cost or resource information. They have simply assigned responsibilities via a text field and manage the cost aspect somewhere else. The PMO is looking for "EVM" type metrics but without cost and resource info I'm sort of at a loss. Is it possible and or does it even make sense to jimmy the EVM metrics to use only duration? I.e. Instead of using BCWP - BCWS, use # of Activities completed - # of Activities scheduled to be completed.... Another example I considered was a modified Earned Schedule (*we started the project in Feb): (# of months complete) + {[(# of tasks completed)-(# of tasks scheduled through April)] / [(# of tasks scheduled in May)-((# of tasks scheduled through April)]} Using the data from the above formula, I would then be able to arrive at SPI(t) & SV(t) QUESTION - Does this make any sense (considering the limited amount of data I have to work with) or am I crazy?     - Publishing a Master Project. Is this a BUG ? Hi, We created a Master Project in PS2007 and inserted sub-projects in it as read-only. But when we publish the Master Project it also publishes assignments updates of the sub-projects although these projects are read-only. We would like to avoid it.     - Slightly off topic but: Resource management Dear all, I asked many questions in the past and some aimed to solve my resource management desires. As you stated rightly and as it looks to me right now, project is not ideally suited to manage resources. When you run bigger projects etc it might be fine but with the juggling here it is some kind of hazzle when I only want to see my resource utilitsation. Often my guys are not working in projects but do single tasks. Can you recommend a good resource management tool? Ideally it could read the resource usage from MSP and then I can add the other tasks. I need to do forecasting and see when my resources are utilised how much and how much person days are not utilised and I can offer to my customers for additional tasks.     - %Complete I am in table tracking on the task sheet. My total duration is 57 days. I have 25 tasks all of them are incomplete. On task 4 I have completed the task 100%. The task was 4 days. Now my %complete is 8%, the actual duration is 4.3 days and the remaining duration is 52.7. Where are these decimals coming from? I entered 100% in the %complete cell.     - Breaking the duration - start date /end date relationship I'm trying to define a task that can occur in a wide time window relative to the work effort involved. Let's say that I have a design spec that's drafted and then sent out for review. The review period is 30 days and I want to assign tasks for people to read the spec and approve or deny it. There's 3 people and I want to assign them each a task with a 1/2 day duration to do this action, but I don't care when they do so in the 30 day review period.     - Remaing work not going forward In MS Project 2003 Professional, for a task that had no hours charged to it since the last time hours were accepted by the PM (that is, the resource did not "touch" this task on his tasksheet in WebAccess for the current reporting period), the remaining work that was scheduled for this time period does not get moved forward. It stays in the last time period (I can see this in the Task Usage view on the client). I don't think it should work like this. If no work was done, the remaining hours should move forward, right? If the resource enters hours, even "0" hours, and updates, then the remaining work DOES move forward, which is how I think it should work. What's going on?     - cannot logon to Project Server 2007 I've read several FAQs, Blogs, etc... I posted to the Project Newsgroup with no luck. A user gets this message when trying to connect from a Office Project 2007 client: "Login failed. Project could not connect to the server. Please check username and password and try again". The same user can login just fine using Internet Explorer. The interesting part is that the user with which I installed Project server has no trouble login in from Office Project or the PWA.     - User cannot logon from project client to server 2007 I installed and configured Project Server 2007 (PS2007). Through internet explorer I'm able to access PWA as _any_ user with http://pserver/pwa. Through MS Office Project 2007 (MSOP2007) client pc I'm able to login with the main admin account used to install PS2007. But not with any other user account. The error is simply that the username and password are rejected. I have search this quite a bit without sucess. I looked here http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm and there are no helpful tips. In order to keep track of initial planned dates, you first need to save a
Baseline (Tools, Tracking, Save Baseline).
