    - Baseline Revision We use our MS project plan to compare the progress of the project relative to the original plan, the baseline. We need to make a modification to the original plan. We need to change the sequence of tasks but the individual tasks and durations for the baseline we want to keep the same. We have already started the project, but the tasks that we are going to "re-sequence" have not started yet. I just modified the predecessors and successors but the dates did not change. I though MS Project would calculate the new dates, I even manually did a "Calculate Now". No change. I set a new baseline but the duration of the tasks already worked on changed therefore my overall schedule and completion date changed. I want to set a new baseline using the original durations not taking into consideration the progress on the project. How do I do this?     - master project changes do not effect sub projects I made a master project by inserting 134 small projects. When I change data on the master project line it will not transfer down to the sub project.. I can go the other way but it makes several hrs more work to updat the sub projects.     - linked tasks to be finished before another task Hi, I have a series of linked tasks, say 101 to 105 with 1 day durations, and I want to set the dependancies such that the last one finishes 2 days before a separate milestone task, task 106. How do I do it so that task 1 automatically starts on the correct day, i.e. 7 days before 106. I don't want to set 101 to start specifically 7 days before 106 as I want to be able to change the durations for 101 to 105 and have the dates corrected automatically.     - Bloated / Slow global.mpt It takes far too long for my projects to open - approx 30 seconds. It takes the same amount of time regardless of whether the project file is brand new or old and large. I decided to pull an old version of my global.mpt from sourcesafe and all the project files open quickly. Figuring it was some sloppy code in the bad global, I piece-by-piece removed all forms and code but the project files still took 30 seconds and I noticed the size of the global didn't change. My thought now is that the response time is due to global.mpt bloat. The bad version is 1.8k and the good version is 1.5k. I'd love to gain some insights into this situation and the remedy.     - Rolling up small plans and dependencies into one big plan Hi, I wonder if someone has an answer to a query I have. I have a group of managers each managing their own piece of work and each producing a project plan. I aim to create one overall plan by importing each plan in to it. Now as the each managers work evolves so will the plan and it will be updated and controlled through version numbers e.g. V1, V2 and so on. My idea is to take each plan and rename it â??plan 1 sourceâ??, â??plan 2 sourceâ?? etc. then import them into my big plan. So when later versions come along with new activities or new dates, when I rename them, my big plan will pick up the new information automatically. I have tested this and it seems to work ok. Now I also want to link dependencies between the individual plans which I can do and which get picked up by the big plan. But the problem is that when the new plans come in to me from the individual managers, the dependencies wonâ??t be there so when I rename the plan, from Vx to â??plan 1 sourceâ?? for example, I will lose that information. Is there a way of retaining the dependencies information in the big plan so it gets fed back to the individual plans?     - Removing a resource from a task? Hi, I'm fairly (really) new to MS Project, and am using the "by guess and by gosh" method of figuring things out when colleagues can't seem to help. I've run into a problem/question that my colleagues don't seem to think is fixable, so I wanted to post it here. First a short overview of what I do with MS Project - I use MS Project as a glorified time sheet at the moment. We have line projects with tasks that last all year, have no time limit, etc. Everyone is just thrown under all the tasks they do, so they can fill in how much time they spend on each task. My problem is, some colleagues are complaining that their task sheet (in EPM for a web environment) is too full, with old or incorrect projects and tasks still visible. These are often old projects that can be closed, but occasionally there are tasks from current projects that the project manager thought these colleagues might do. It turns out that they don't, so they don't want to see them anymore. I know they can do "hide", but I was trying to come up with a way to clean it up and have them removed from the task altogether. It doesn't seem possible. Everywhere I look, I see ways to add people, but no way to say, "oops, that was a mistake, I need to remove them". Does anyone have a suggestion? Thank you in advance.     - Linking tasks Suppose that I have 3 tasks: task 1, task 2 and task 3 that all can start after task 0 is completed. They can be done in parallel. but same resources are working on all 3 tasks. each task by itself has let's say 8 hr works and let's assume 1 day duration. Now task 4 can start after these 3 tasks are completed. How should I define predecessors? i tried to define predecessors of task 1,2,3 as task 0 and predecessor of task for as tasks 1,2,3. But the start and finish date of all 3 tasks stayed the same. They all started and finished in the same day. But I have the same resources working on alll 3 tasks. so in reality they can not start and finish on the same date.     - Reporting with SQL Reporting Services Hello. We are looking to create reports using SQL Reporting Services. We want to report similar tasks in different project files cumulatively. We have SQL Reporting Services, and according to our IT person, one of the first steps is to create queries in SQL that will query the tables to get the information we need to go into the reporting module. However, this has been a very hard process. Mainly because: 1 - We have about 33 different project files 2 - The data in the "actual work" fields in the tables are recorded as some kind of seconds that we are unsure of (i.e. 1 hour shows in the database as 160000 or some other number like that).     - Dead time in a large project Hi all. I am in desperate need for help!! I have a MS Project file that has over 3000 activities. It is built in such a way that all tasks that have no predecessor start at the beginning of the project, so MS Project can level them later. There are no resources allocated on tasks for more than the maximum allowed in the resource sheet, so this is not the cause of the delays. The project was created by inserting the WBS and activities first, then dependencies, then work and resources. Tasks are all Fixed Work, so that the duration can be determined by MS Project. Basically, the question I am asked to answer is "When is this project going to finish?" An example of the problem I am getting is that Suzanne, Robert & Steve are assigned 85% on a task. They maximum is 95% and they are also assigned at 10% on another task that goes from project start to its very end (concurrent to the task on which they are assigned 85%). After the levelling, the task on which they are assigned is suddenly broken (split) and then there is a 3 month delay. I thought it was due to the fact that one of them was assigned on another task, thus delaying other resources, but it is not the case apparently. They are all halted for 3 months. Of course, I checked all dependencies and calendars. So, these are also not the source of the problem. 1. How can I unsplit all tasks all at once? Don't want to do thousands of tasks manually... 2. Why am I getting this kind of delay (3 month in the example)? 3. I still have sometimes residual data of the levelling. MS Project and Alzeimer seems to have things in common. How do you COMPLETELY delete levelling data, so that you start from a fresh set of data, as entered initially. BTW, I am clearing the levelling every time and deleting the colomn (audit delay).     - Publishing Tasks with Unwanted Email Notifications Hi, I would like to publish tasks in Project Professional 2007 that were approved in Project Web Access 2007 without sending an email notification to the assigned resources every time. Currently, a resouce will receive an email notifying him/her of a published task every time my fellow Project Manager or I publish a task. We receive several task updates a day for multiple projects and want to ensure we approve and apply these updates to the plan as soon as possible.     - Trying to understand how the numbers add up in Resource Usage view Hello, I am relatively new to Project and am trying to understand how the numbers add up in the Resource Usage View. I have read several posts on how resources can appear overallocated at the day level when it does not seem that they should be (because they are overallocated at the hour or minute level). To fully understand, I changed the timescale for the view to be days/hours/minutes. My confusion is due to the fact that I see most minutes with work of .02h. Sometimes they appear as overallocated and sometimes they do not. In addition, the row that contains the totals per minute for a given resource never seems to go above .02h, even if there is more than one task below it assigned .02h for that one minute. I think I understand that the .02 is approximatley 1/60, but am confused about why it is sometimes overallocated and sometimes the sheet itself does not seem to add up. However, when running the program, the Project begins to make the initial settings, then gives an error saying: "Not enough memory to complete the operation. To release the memory available, close programs, projects or windows that not using and try again." My machine has 2GB and 250GB of HD, runs Vista Home Premium and other applications of Office 2007.     - Resource Usage Report I am using MS Project 2003 and have a need for a Resource Usage Report which is to be generated from a Resource Pool where I roll up the tasks each resource is assigned to into each resource then instead of the hours per period showing in cells in the report I get a horizontal bar graph showing the overall duration for each resource. The resulting chart should look like a simplified Gantt Chart showing each resource's allocation as a bar. Oh, we want to see all resources on a page and not one at a time. We want to use this simplified report to just show when a resource is working on a project and when they will be available for their next assignment. Some of our staff prefer this to seeing the number of hours which is the default. Of course, the next thing we will want after we can get this report is which projects they are working on. I have inserted a column in the Resource Usage view of the Resource Pool file that shows the path and name of the project files that use the pool so maybe there is a way to also show the project number either to the right of each bar or in the bar.     - Default Start Time I have created a new calendar and change the working times to 07:30-16:30. I have allocated this as the project calendar and assigned to to the Gantt chart.     - Graphical Indicators not working? I am attempting to setup Enterprise Custom Fields in PS 2007, displaying the data with a graphical indicator based on a formula. After a few reloads of Project Professional, I am able to find the field in the Insert>Column list, and add it to a new project. The fields all calculate without difficulty. The problem occurs when I add it to an existing project. I add the column fine, but for some reason, values only report for some of the rows. Some rows show no data at all - they are entirely blank. Others do. This occurss randomly, both on rows with actuals and those without! Also.... when I publish the project, PWA does not always show the indicator.... Am I doing something wrong? I am using a Project Schedule from another employee and I am unable to do
three things I am normally able to do. (1) I cannot click on the task number
and select the entire line. (2) I cannot adjust the height of the task line.
And (3) I cannot wrap the text within a cell.
Is there someway in which the previous owner may have locked the Gantt Chart?

Hello scrufnut,

You cannot lock the Gantt chart but by modifying the table you can
disable the ability to select a row and thereby change row height. It's
done by unlocking the first column in the table.

Try View > Table: current table name > More tables. The table applied
should be selected in the More Tables dialog box. Click the Edit
button, and in the Table Definition dialog box, enable (check) the "Lock
first column" checkbox.
