Hi Kay,
I'm not sure from your post what "resource view" you are working with that
you think is "okay." You can show the non-working time from individual
resource calendars as the background of the Resource Usage view through
Format > Timescale, and select the calendar from the Non-working time tab.
This is best done after filtering the view to remove all but a single
resource.
Fellow MVP, Jan De Messemaeker had an article on his website about
converting non-working time into tasks that you may also find useful. See

and select the link "Microsoft Project: an Abstract" under the English
heading.
