I my project the task numbers (left-hand most column, shown in grey) run from
1 to 263, then the numbering restarts all over again at 1 through 360. How
do i renumber the tasks so they run consecutively from 1 through 623 (the
end).

I inserted a column to display the WBS numbers. Interestingly, the WBS
numbering restarts at the very same task.

I did a sort by WBS number and selected "permanently renumberthe tasks". It
did not renumber these tasks.

Did you perhaps instert a project file within this file (underneath your
original)?
You can check by inserting the indicators column and looking for something
that appears similar to the project icon on the second line 1.

You can correct this by opening the source of the second project, copying
all the tasks and then pasting them back into the other file. You will also
need to delete the second project from the first file.

Jim,
I think you are right about the inserted project idea. However there is
an easier way to either create a static master from the onset or convert
a dynamic master to a static master than to use copy & paste. In the
former, select the insertion point summary line and go to Project/Task
Information/Advanced tab. Uncheck the "link to project" box and hit
"OK". If the goal is to create a new static master, before hitting the
"insert" button on the Insert Project window, uncheck the "link to
project" option in the lower right hand corner.
