    - Summary task % complete I have a project with about 700 tasks in it. SOME of the summary/rollup tasks do NOT show 100% even though all subtasks are 100% complete I have tried changing the % complete to 100% but it automatically changes back to 99% complete when I click on okay. There are no special constraints and some of the tasks update correctly. I have the options set to calculate automatically and I have no outside dependencies.     - Muliple Instances of Project I have a dual monitor setup on my desktop computer. I want to open two instances of MS Project 2007 side-by-side so that I work on them.     - Secured Global.mpt for MSP2007std Hello All, I have several independent installations of MSP2007std. They will be sharing plans and resources, and viewing a master(consolidated) schedule file comprising inserted projects. I want the option settings for each installation to be universal, and that views table etc are common throughout. I also need to take control of the master settings to prevent damage and enforce standards. I think I need to do this to prevent incorrect alendar and resource changes. As far as I can tell some settings are in global.mpt (Options menu items), some are saved in each project file (eg view print settings), and some can be replaced in the file via organizer. I have have noted Rod Gill's suggestion to place global.mpt in a central location and have the MSP shortcuts setting redirect "Start in" to that location. However, that allows the user to modify the original file (some have admin rights). As an alternative, I was considering a batch file that overwrites the local global.mpt with a standardised version, retrieved from a central location. This batch file would be placed in all users' Windows Startup so it would occur each time Windows was started. Any inadvertant changes would then be remedied each startup. Does the location of the local global.mpt vary with updates etc? Does this seem a feasible solution? Is there a better way? Server version is not an option for us. Extra est AUD11000 for three users.     - Why Do Summary Tasks Show Incorrect Totals? I can't seem to get summary taks to display correct durations, and yes, I know it's supposed to be from the start date of the first task to the end date of the last task. Here's an example from adding a recurring task (Monday update meeting) to a project. The span is 35 days. The summary task shows a duration of 105.13 days.     - Page Formatting I have tried a number of suggestions to stretch a schedule's timescale over the full page width of an 11 x 17. As others have found, the font can get incredibly small if the duration of the schedule is excessive. I have been able to overcome this to an extent by changing the font size using Format:Text Style. However, I always seem to get to a point where Project decides to adjust the duration rather than the font size. For instance, my duration is 440 days and my print out is looking pretty good, covering the whole page. I decide to enlarge the font for the column headers and when I next do a print preview, the displayed duration has increasaed to 880 days. Neither my timescale scaling factor in page setup or my print range have changed, but my preview shows a lot of white space on the right half of the page and my scheduel scrunched into infinitessimally small fonts on the left side Is there anyway to lock the time scale so it covers the full page width? -- Paul Tag: Project Pro 2003 and 2007 on same PC Tag: 136692

    - using a formula in a customized field...syntax problem? I have created a formula in a customized field to collect costs in the Task table. I want to be able to apply a factor to the cost of a â??laborâ?? resource and not to a â??materialâ?? resource. I thought I could get it to work by using one or the other of the following syntax statements: IIf([Resource Type]="Work",[Cost]*(1+1.64),0) IIf([Type]="Work",[Cost]*(1+1.64),0) The above syntax statements did not work. The way I got it to work was to insert a name in the Resource table in the Resource Group field called â??Supplierâ?? for material.     - Project Management Tasks (to be excluded from the critical path) As part of my project, most of the tasks are sequential and inter-linked (as normal). However, I want to have some tasks sit separate from these tasks because they are Project Management (PM) tasks. These tasks exists as "support tasks" to the other tasks. For example, for every week that the project runs, I will need 2 hours a week assigned to the "Project controls and reporting" task. Currently I've got it set up in a basic way. I've budgeted for a 6-week project so my PM tasks are sitting at the top of the Gantt chart as 6-week tasks. However, there are two obvious problems: 1. These tasks are set at 6 weeks, and the total duration of the rest of the project is only about 5.5 weeks at the moment. This means that I am planning to do 0.5 weeks of PM tasks after the project has already finished! How can I restrict the end of this task? I've tried setting up a finish-finish relationship with a "project complete" milestone task (one that is complete once all the functional tasks are complete) but this moves the whole PM task along. This seems strange to me since the task is not "fixed-duration". 2. Because these projects have the latest finish date and start on the project start date, they all make up the critical path. However this doesn't make sense, since they only are running while other tasks are running. How can I exclude them from the critical path calculation? How can I set up Project like this?     - automatic resource assignment I have what I believe to be an extremely common situation. I have a dozen programmers. For the purpose of this question, assume them to be interchangeable. Each has his own availability (due to hiring dates, other projects, ramp-up times) which I think I know how to represent in the resource information. Each also has assorted other obligations (support, review participation, meetings, etc) that I also think I know how to represent as tasks. All of these people are capable of a reasonable degree of multi-tasking. I also have a bunch of new development tasks that need doing, and to a first approximation it doesn't matter who does which of them. I would love to be able to tease Project into assigning tasks to resources, based on the available time that each resource has. I haven't seen a way to do this. I can make my own assignments, but I have to specify how much each person will work on the task. This is not a fixed number ... as each person has a different number of available hours each week (due to availability dates, ramp-ups, and other responsibilities). I would at least like to get Project to apply "the available hours" to a task ... but I cannot find a way to do this either. Essentially, it seems that I have to decide who will work, how much, on each task, starting when ... after which Project will be happy to print beautiful reports. Figuring out who should work, on which task, starting when, seems to be my problem. This seems a pretty common problem (it is one I've had continuously for the last thirty years) and yet I can't find discussions of it, nor have I seen sample projects that seem to address these issues. In a (surely different, but) related problem, I have deliberately assigned only a small fraction of a person to a task (knowing that they will have at least that much time available). Whether the task is fixed unit or fixed work, I often find that applying someone 10% time to a 25 day task, results in them doing four hours per week of work for five weeks after which the task is shown as completed ... (in only 20 hours of work). Apparently I don't understand when a duration is a start-to-end day count, and when duration is a number of staff-days.     - "Operation failed" when mapping fields from Excel data When importing Excel data into Project 2003, I click Finish on the field mapping wizard. I then get an "Operation failed" message. This action has worked fine for many months, but recently began to fail. This concided with a the recent round of security patches pushed down from Microsoft. Both files are on the local machine, and are both from Excel and Project 2003 versions. The error will appear whether I use existing or create new maps.     - TINA - Different calendars in one project Hi ... I have a project where I am using 2 different calendars ... one is 7 days a week from 8 to 6 1/2 hour lunch and the other is 5 days a week 7 to 5 1 hour lunch ... I put the 'most common' calendar in as the 'project calendar' and then for any individual tasks that required the 2nd calendar, I applied it as a 'task calendar' ... and yet when you turn on time on the start and end columns, you do not see the time change ... the durations go into decimals (and I have the tools/options/calendar tab in sync with the project calendar) ... am I doing something wrong or is there a sequence of events? The other alternative was to break the project down into 2 small projects and let them have their own calendars as project calendars and then bring them together in a consolidated project?     - Mobilise/Demobilise indentifier Say i have an activity which is mobilising five days for three men. I can clearly add resources to that task, so that i can totalise based on any number of activities being worked, however what i am struggling to do is to flag up that on the day they mobilise they will take up three seats on a helicopter, and likewise when they demob, as any coding i input into MSP will apply to the entire duration of the task. Is there a clever way that i can apply a specific resource code to the first and last day, or is there another better way of doing this?     - Physical%Complete on Gantt Bar I am attempting to show Physical%Complete shading on the Gantt Bar. I assigned costed resources, set a baseline, task EV Type is Physical%Complete, I have properly set a status date. Format/Bar Styles... I changed all the progress indicators from "Complete Through" to "Physical%Complete" I have the text to the right of the tasks showing Physical%Complete. However, the progress line on the Gantt Bar does not shade even though the Physical%Complete shows properly on the Gantt chart. BCWP and BCWS are calculating properly. Is it possible to install Project Pro 2003 and 2007 side by side on the same
machine without any disturbance or mixture between the GLOBAL.MPT files?
How can we do that ?

Hi Robert,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

I have 2003 and 2007 (both the Standard versions) on my PC for test purposes
without harm, installed in separate folders. If I were using them in a real
life way, I think I would play safer by putting them on separate partitions.
However, I have heard of no instances where interference between globals has
been a problem. Go ahead an give it a try - make certain you have the
latest updates installed.
