Can I generate a network diagram and export it to VIsio?

No. There is a visio WBS chart wizard
(http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=02D8A587-3ED7-4649
-A1B1-EA10D25BCCC2&displaylang=en) for Visio 2002. Things in 2003 changed
and now there is a new method of data import called the import project data
wizard. The resulting data comes in as a timeline or gantt chart, not as a
network diagram though.

All this functionality is in Visio, not project. Project only supplies the
data. So look at the visio help to find out more.

What Jack said.

But take a look at PERT Chart Expert from Critical Tools.
www.criticaltools.com

VERY cool stuff. All the things you wish Project's Network Diagram did,
but doesn't.

To clarify - you can easily generate a network diagram, it's right there on
the View menu. The part you can't do is the export to Visio.

Why do you need it in Visio? Perhaps we can help figure out another way to
skin that cat.

It really is pretty messy - what were your thoughts? I'd like to do it on
11x17 in as few pages as possible. I am looking at close to 650 activities.
(This is an enterprise level project).

650 activities at approximately 8 in square each (includes room to draw the
lines and have some separation) would be be approximately 36 square feet.
That would be pretty densely packed. I'd see if I could find a plotter so
you could print it on large paper.
And consider summarizing.

If you can print it to 11x17 in your printer in Visio, you can just as
easily do so directly in Project. The page sizes you can print in any
application are determined more by the printer and its driver than the
application doing the printing. Even if you could export the view to Visio
and set the drawing page to anything you like, it would still actually print
as a number of panels the size of your printer output that you'd have to
paste up. Remember Visio has a drawing page size setting and a printer page
setting - the printer page is the same as you'd see in the print dialog in
Project and printing in Project itself will give exactly the same output you
could get in Visio.

Jack's suggestion to look into a plotter might be an option to consider - if
you do this a lot it makes a perfect business case to justify the purchase
of a spiffy new toy to your CFO <grin>.
