    - Exporting to XML Greetings, I'm trying to export to XML format and I'm running into some problems. First I tried using the XML Reporting Wizard add-on, but Project got hung up in the middle of the export and I had to kill the process. Next I tried simply "Save as..." XML and I achieved the same result. Is my project too big? The initial part of the save/export process seems to run fine, and then all of a sudden it runs into trouble and gobbles up CPU usage with no progress. I've even given it around 10-15 minutes and still nothing. My project is around 1500 tasks long and only about a hundred resources. Is there a general reason for this sort of problem? Thanks.     - Resource I have set up my resources into a separate project plan. (1) When appointing resources to share a task, and one of the resources has non-work time scheduled, MS Project (resource leveling) appears to split the task to be continued only when that resource has returned to their work time. Is there any way for project consider leveling the task with the balance of resources asigned to the task, instead of me manually inserting those times? (2) The resource sheet is extrememly helpful. However is there any way to view from the calander or any other view, resource non work times for all resources? This would allow for a snap shot of who (or how many) resournces may not be working for a particular day/week/month. thanks and sorry if these are obvious questions..     - Different utilisation %s at different times wtihin same task I have a task which carries on over a long-ish period. During that time, a resource will spend some time working on it, and some time not working on it. I can show that by splitting the task. But can I show the resource utilisation at different % at different times? EG: week 1 - 100%, week 2 - off, week 3 - 50%. The problem I have is that if there is a single utilisation % throughout, then the resource is overallocated on the Resource Graph when it is allocated to other tasks. And I'm trying to avoid having separate tasks for every time the resource stops and starts the job, though this may be the only solution? Any help will be appreciated!     - Roll up baseline I have insertet four subprojects into a master project. I open every one of them from the masterproject (outline level) and values in the row representing the inserted subproject are updated accordingly - except for "Baseline Work". This value is rolled up to the top level in each subproject, but it is not rolled up/reflected in the line representing the subproject in the masterproject. Why?     - Export map or Analyze Timescaled data I would like to draw an S-curve to track the progress for my project. I am going to export data to excel and draw the curve there. I need to export the task/summary task names and timescaled data for at least Actual Work and Basline Work. As far as I can see I have three possibilities and attached questions 1. Use File - Save As - MS Excel: Is it possible to include timescaled data using the MS Project Export wizard? The advantage by using this method is to create and "export map" so that it is easier to do the operation over again "next week" 2. Use Analyze Timescaled Data in Excel wizard: Is it possible to make a "map" from this wizard so that I don't have to go through the whole wizard each time 3. Copy and Paste directly from a customized view in Project (probably the easiest and best) to Excel: Is it possible to get "Baseline Work" in the right part of the Project view; timescaled values in the same way as Actual Work and Work etc. I will greatly appreciate your response!     - Resource Leveling question Hi everybody I'm stuck at the Resource Leveling while preparing a plan for about 18 projects each having almost similar 10 to 15 tasks and the whole duration extending to about 10 months After allocation of resources, I find that there are quite a few overallocation and under allocations.To level them I'm referring to the Resource Usage sheet and then manually reallocating the resources. After doing this for some of the tasks, when I level resources for some new task I find that many a times, this results in over/under allocation at places where I had already levelled the resources. Is there a way to avoid this?     - exporting data to excel In project I'm using a status field with graphical indicators (red, green etc) to indicate status. I'm exporting this data to excel. In excel the field is represented by the numerical value of the indicator (0,1,2,3). Are the same graphical indicators (red, green circles) available in excel as well. I saw the conditional formating which allowed color to be added to text but could not find similar graphical indicators as in project.     - Predecessors not working I entered about 30 tasks in a row, some subtasks and some tasks. All started and ended on the same day. Now that I have them entered, I wanted to go back and link in predecessor tasks but the start date doesn't adjust. Task 1 starts 1/5/04 Ends 1/10/04 Task 10 Starts 1/5/04 Ends 1/6/04 I wanted Task 10 to be dependent on Task 1 ending, so I linked 1 to 10, but the start date for 10 did not change.     - creating a graphical indicator I would like to create a graphic indicator for the "status" field that is different than the one provide by the "status indicator field. Since I do not have access to the "status indicator" field to edit it can someone help me create the formula and the test condition for the graphical indicator.     - Problems printing to pdf using Adobe Distiller On Win2000 using MS Project 2002, when I attempt to print to the Acrobat Distille (I have Adobe 5.0), then MS Project asks me where to save the new pdf file. Afte designating a folder and filename, I get an error message from MS Project whil it is apparently trying to "print" the file into ...\Desktop\*.pdf (regardless of wha folder I try to send it to).     - Link a prject to excel If I cut out all activities in Project and then paste them into Excel as a link I will get a dynamic picture of the project in Excel. However I do not get the complete project if i wish to show it on a day-by-day basis. It works OK if I use a smaller scale.     - Resource Leveling Question Hello everyone What a nice place to learn and use new features for Project I am using MS Project 2000, and I have this situation: I create a list of activities having all the same start date, but with various durations. I assign resources to each of them, and I level the activities. Somehow, for the busiest resource, the leveling won't extend towards the longest single activity, but several conflicts will be generated.     - Project 2003 files saving as 98 We are upgrading all existing Project 98 installs with Project 2003. The 98 was a network install, and we are installing 2003 using group policies. When a user opens 2003 and goes to save the document, it automatically saves it in 98 file format. They get a box "Saving to Microsoft Project 98 format" with no option of saving it as 2003. When opening the file from explorer, it defaults opening to 98 (from the network share) and you can only open the file with 2003 if you open Project 2003 first.     - Uncontrolled change of Work When Actual Work is inserted at specific days, Project might change the Work. It does not matter for me that Project rearranges the work to fit those days where the actual work was inserted. My problem is that the overall sum changes! When I try to fix the problem by reinserting my original Work, it seems like Project sometimes will not let me. If I insert 23, Project writes 23,13! The second or third time though, Project lets me write 23, getting closer for each time. My problem is that I would like a solution nicer than just repeating the insertion until the right value is inserted! This seems very strange to me.     - MS-EPM in a distributed architecture - does it work? Does anyone have any experience using MS-EPM in a distributed architecture? MS-EPM works great on a 100Mbps LAN, but we have a WAN architecture. We are experiencing terrible performance problems when we centralize the server in a WAN architecture, but MS-EPM doesn't seem to support database replication between servers. We have used database replication between ORACLE servers for many years and have been very happy with that type of solution. Can database replication be made to work with MS-EPM? Any suggestions?     - creating timeline in something other than Project or Visio We use Visio - only for timelines. I know Microsoft Project allows you to create a file that'll be read by Visio but we don't do that. Visio works great but we have problems getting everybody to make timelines that look the same. Same length, width, font, noe more than 10 milestone instead of 50. What I'd like to do is give people a web page that lets them type in a date and some milestone text and then have the timeline be generated automatically. The timeline doesnot's need to be in Visio but I do like the way they look in Visio. Does anybody know of a way to get what I need?     - Cost Loading MS Project Hello (using version 2002 I am attempting to do some very basic cost loading in MS Project. I have a projects as tasks and I just want to generate a very simple cumulative cost curve using the Resource Graph. I want the cost to just spread across the timeline of the project (task). So far I am using the fixed cost field to load costs onto each project(task) and I have tried to get the Resource Graph to display a cumulative cost curve without using any resources. Is this possible? I don't want to use the "Analyze Timescaled Data in Excel" because I want to be able to print out the resource graph and the Gantt on the same page.     - Need help on resource availabilities and scheduling MSP 2002 My project contains a no of linked tasks (FtoS), all tasks are Fixed work, effort driven. No constraints whatsoever. The same three part-time resources are assigned to all tasks. Today one of the resources announced he will be home sick for one week, he is not necessary for the tasks, ie the other two may do his job. The sick guy's assignment is 90% on all tasks. I enter his abscence in either of two ways: non-working time in his personal calender or Resource availability set to 0 in the Resource Information dialog. The result is that the other two resources stop working on the task until the "sick guy" returns. This seems a little odd, I feel they should continue on the current and coming tasks and do as much work as possible until all resurces are back. When levelling, the "Levelling can adjust individual assignments" is checked. I've searched the newsgroups but can't find any similar problem description.     - Work fields - ODBC Hi... I have tried to use MSProject 2000 by ODBC, because I need to integrate another system to it. When I fill, in msp_tasks, duration fields (task_dur, task_act_dur,...), it works well and shows the values correctly.     - COM Automation / Updating Hierarchy I'm exporting data from an external application in to MS Project using com automation. I have successfully taken tasks from the the external app and built a hierarchy in Project, including adding the dependencies. Where I am stuck, is when I want to update MS Project from the external application. I can update fields like name and predecessors. But, I can't figure out how to update the hierarchy. As a simple example, suppose my first export resulted in: Task 1 Task 2 Task 3 The second export should result in: Task 1 Task 3 Task 2 I could do this, if all I need to do was change the outline level of Task 2, but in this case I need to move task 3 up one row and then change it's ouline level.
