I am trying to split a task that has 12 hours so far split over several days.
I am trying to show that 4.5hrs were put on the task the first day, 6.5 the
second day and 2 hrs the 3rd day plus there are a few more hours of work
remaining. How do I split the task this way?

You do not need to spilt the task. Just go to the views menu. select the
"task usage" view or "resource usage" view and enter the work directly in
the cells for those days.

Hi Jen,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

In the Task Usage view, right click in the yellow cells and select Actual
Work. Enter the hours as you wish.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)
