    - Start asap but with one resource when available Hi I know it's possible but can't find the answer: Resource 1 does task 1 and it ends 19.03.2008 Resource 2 does task 2 and it ends 21.03.2008 Task 3 can only be started, when at least one resource is available and shall be done by both.     - Project Server features Hi, I have a requirement: My users had multiple projects going on with different project schedule. What they want is to dump all the different project schedule in the MS Project Server, and this server:- is able to consolidate all the project schedule like Project 1, Project 2, Project 3 and from there, all the engineer will go to the MS Project Server to see their schedule milestones, and the Server will also be able to send them alert that certain project is going to be behind the schedule soon.     - Add resources to a running task take 2 ;-) Hi, I am putting together a production plan for our shipyard. Currently there are two 40m+ projects running. One has just started, the other one is half way completed. I have made two project plans and then combined them into a masterplan. Now I am assigning resources from a seperate file which I use only as resource pool. Within this resource pool, I have, for example, a resource called laminators. At the start of the task of laminating my hullshell I have 5 guys working. So I have set the max number of units for this resource to 500%. 3 weeks into this task I may employ another 8 guys to speed things up on this task running. First question is, within the resource pool, to what do I set the max resource units? To the maximum of laminators I will eventually have (=1300%)? This way I will not get a resource overallocation once I assign up to 13 workers, BUT, I would equally not get an overallocation warning if I accidentally assign more then the 5 laminators which I actually have at the start to other tasks. The latter can easily happen on aproject with several hundred tasks. Second question is, within my project masterplan, how do I best show the increase of people over the running task? Currently I have worked around it by splitting the task in two, assigning 500% of the resource laminators to this first part of the task and then assigning 1300% to the second task of the task. Probably there is amore elegant way to do this?     - Disconnection of TFS from Project 2007 - Work Item ids get blank in Project 2007 File Hi, I am facing a problem in integration of TFS with Microsoft Project 2007. Let me explain first what we did, we have assigned task in TFS to respective resource and Import all the Task in MPP by available option "Get Work Item" against Team system Project. Then I did proper alignment of task and Set predecessors and finally publish the project plan on Project Web Access. Project Plan shows Values of TFS in its custom columns. Column mapping can be defined in MappingFile.xml, Work Item id is mapped in TEXT10 field of Project 2007. Initially Plan shows all the mapping correctly and get Published successfully on Project web Access(Project Server), but since few days When i open a MPP file the Work Item field is blank although other TFS columns are populated correctly. I am unable to figure out the problem with the Work Item ids. Keep in mind that my plan is still connected with Team System Project because Option for "Choose Team system project" is grayed out.     - Best pratice to setup task loops This is a general question on best pratices that I am just looking for some insight on. I am in the process of redoing several Project task lists/templates and I am coming across lots of approval, QC and rework loops. I am trying to determine the best way to handle these loops. So far my two choices are to insert a new task and call it rework. Or to just not allow the user to close the prior task but that seem to have problems too. What is the recomended way to do this? I can't seem to find a column that will allow me to enter such data, link the data to the task name, and then display it in the Resource View Sheet. Most of the times the resource assigned to a task is the task owner itself, but when I change the owner to be someone else, the notifications after I publish the project are sent only to this person.     - Max units in Resource Pool vs. Sharer Files Hello, I am setting up some projects to share resources from a resource pool. My original plan was to have the max units set at 90% in the Resource Pool (allowing resources to spend 90% of their time on projects in general), and then to set the max units lower in the sharer files, if necessary. This was done so that scheduling for an individual project could be controlled by how much time was allocated to each project, but the resource pool would not show over allocations unless someone was above the 90% threshold. I set the conflict option to Sharer takes precedence. I have two observations: 1. For my first project, I set the max units to 50% within the project. This appeared to work but when I reopened the project, only resources that had been assigned to tasks retained the 50%, the remaining resources defaulted back to the 90% max units from the resource pool. 2. When I introduced an additional project, and wanted to set max units at 25%, it became more confusing... the first project changed to the 25% defined in the second project. So my question is - is there a way to do what I am describing at the max units level, or is there a better way to do this? Thank you in advance for any suggestions!     - Removing Resource from multi-resource task I have a task that has 4 people allocated at 25% each. Planned work is 100 hours for each resource and they have all tracked 25 hours of actual work on the task. Resource-a got moved to a special assignment on another project and needs to be removed from this task.     - How do I remove a 'Progress Line'? I just started looking over the different features of MS Project and while viewing with the 'Tracking Gantt' option checked, I am trying different buttons just to see what they do and, for instance, when I click the 'Add Progress Line' and click in the schedule somewhere, I can't remove it; 'Can't Undo' is what is displayed under the 'Edit' drop down menu. I typed in 'remove progress line' in the help 'Search for:' dialog box and didn't get any 'help' from that either. The only relevant search result that comes close the subject of 'remove progress line' is 'About progress lines', which doesn't address how to 'remove' them. My only way around this will be to save after each successful task and close without saving and open the file back up if I use the wrong function - and this is ludicrous at best.     - MS Project professional 2003 and Server 2003 I am new the MS Project and Have the professional version installed. I am running Vista Business 2007. Does the Professional version include Project Server in the installation? I see references to it but it is unclear to me if I need to purchase a separate CD. The version I have was uninstalled by me, from another computer in my office and installed on my computer. Another computer in the office has a shortcut to MS Project Server that seems to open up Project documents but I cannot figure out how it is doing it.     - Can't See New Task on Tracking Gantt? Hi all, hoping someone can help me with a problem I'm having with project for work. Currently I am in the process of tweeking and changing little things like durations and dates within Project in relation to my works overall programme of projects, before rebase-lining the whole thing in April. One thing that we're doing is adding another task in each project ( a Maintenance phase after our Construction phase), now I can see this maintenance phase in the Gantt view but when I switch to the Tracking Gantt view the phase is gone/not there and there's only the construction phase with a linking arrow to nothing.     - Changing Hours per day causes error in Finish date Hi, I'm using MS Project 2003. I've a requirement in my work that requires me to change the working hours for the resources to 9 hours. Once I do this change and add new tasks, the duration of the task is reflected properly by taking into account 9 hrs per day instead of the default 8 hrs per day. BUt the Finish date for the task is still calculated using 8 hrs per day. This is leading to lot of Schedule Variance, which is actually not there. Any help in this regard is greatly appreciated.     - Keeping Task Schedule Intact Just wondering if people generally apply dependencies to tasks after resource levelling the schedule? My problem is that if I donâ??t apply dependencies to all tasks I constantly have to resource level future tasks that have shifted due to an earlier schedule slippage, but perhaps there is a better/easier solution? E.g. Phase 1 and 2 have 100 tasks each and are due to last a year. Phase 2 cannot start until Phase 1 finishes. Phase 1 gets delayed by one month, so as a consequence all tasks in Phase 2 should shift out a further month. If I donâ??t put dependencies between all tasks, they will not shift uniformly and I will therefore loose the resource levelling. I generally do the resource levelling manually.     - Add resources to a running project. Add resources to a running project. I use MS Project 2003 to plan the work of a team of developers and predict when projects will be ready. Each team member is a single resource. Before starting a project some resources are assigned to it. Let's say I start a project on march 1st, with 4 people (resources) assigned on it. March 8th is decided to speed things up by assigning 2 more resources to the project. Now MS Project recalculates the whole project, based on start date march 1st, with 6 resources assigned to it. That, of course, gives me an incorrect project length and end date. Also, the other way around, when a resource is removed from a project, the whole project is recalculated as if it's done without that resource. Imagine what will happen if you have a project with 2 resources working on it for several months, and you decide the last week of the job can be done by just one... In short: is there any way to specify a date on which a single resource starts/stops working on a running project? I've done a lot of 'googling' but couldn't find a solution. Perhaps because of that english isn't my native language (as if you didn't notice that...) so I don't know the right keywords to look for exactly.     - Allocating Resources Between Two Different Projects I am currently working on 2 separate projects using Project 2003. They both are using the same resources at the same time. I have shared the resource pool between the 2 projects but, I am confused about how to appropriately leverage overallocated time between the projects. I am afraid that if I try to leverage time I will create problems for the entire projects by creating delays. I have printed out the "Who Does What" report and the "Overallocated Resources" which shows the tasks for each resource for each project on the same page, but I do not understand them.     - Cannot login to PWA from a computer other than the install server I cannot login to PWA from my desktop computer however I can login when I access PWA on the server where I installed Project Server. BTW, I am using integrated authentication which works fine on the server. I am having the same problem accessing the shared service provider I created.     - Resources - How to - Recalibrate shared resourses Hello, When I assign 2 engineers to a task of 4 days, that task gets reduced to 2 days, this assumes that 2 people are able to do a job twice as fast, but I know that those 2 engineers working together produce as 1.7 men instead of 2. How do you guys take this into account? Is Project able to recalibrate those resources in the way I want? Let me explain the way I do it and you guys can correct me... I have my resources added through the Resource Sheet, in there, a resource has a Max Units of 100%. However, on the Task Information, under the Resources tab, I add the 2 resources I want to work on that task and I change their Units to 85%, this will do that task at 1.7 rate, so the 4 days task will be done on 2.35 days instead of 2 days.     - PWA 2007 Error on Page Problems My department recently migrated to Project 2007. We have been having many problems using PWA. When the initial page is loaded for PWA, many people in my department get an error on page - '_spBodyOnLoadFunctionNames' is undefined. I have added a Standard Cost and an Overtime Cost for my resources, but also
want to add an Average Cost, but I can't find another column to add to the
Gantt that seems to be usable for this. Hoping someone may know a way.

Hi Nerimo,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

There is no Average Cost field. However, you could insert a Cost field eg
Cost1 and put a formula in it like Cost + Overtime Cost / Work.
