    - Dates withink project don't agree with Actual calender days since moving onto MPP 2003 I have been experience problems with task start and end dates. for expample I create a task which starts on 29/09 (as a start as soon as possible/no Lag days) is is a 30 day task , MPP calculates it finish as 04/11. I caluclate it finsh as being 07/11. I have checked all my resource calenders and have non working weekends with no resource non availability during this time. Task are se tto Fixed duration.     - Hiding cost data Is there a way to hide resource cost data? My management wants the ability to look at the data, but they don't necessarily want others to have access to the data. For example: Jim's billable cost is 10.00/hour, on a Project Schedule, his total cost for the task he's assigned to is 100.00 Bill is Jim's team lead, and he needs access to the schedule to update, but does NOT require access to the billable cost.     - How does one forecast completion date based on current progress? Is there a way that MS Project can forecast a new completion(finish) date, based on the % complete progress update? In other words if the % complete makes the project with a "LATE" status, the forecast completion(finish) date will move out, and vice versa. If so, please explain the process to me.     - Progressing tasks & retaining logic Using MSP2003. When I progress my plan, MSP shows me retained logic + progress whereas, what I would like to see is the progressed parts of activities before the Status date and parts of activities that have not been started behind the status date (with the option to either retain, or not, the logic) I've tried the options under Tools/Options an the Calculation tab but to no avail.     - Machine timing in seconds / minutes I have found Project 2003 very useful for analysing and balancing timing of automated production machines, but MS in thier wisdom never envisioned projects needing seconds or fractions of a second as a time unit. All my times need to be shown in minutes and hours, and this is ok for me but awkward in management presentations. Can someone tell me if Project 2007 now supports seconds?     - Projects/tasks cancelled I have a program in MS 2003 with 50 individual projects all in the same file as they share resources. One of the projects has been cancelled but some of the tasks were already completed. This cancelled project has no dependencies with other projects and I want to know what is the best way to reflect this situation in MS Project. I can think of deleting the not completed tasks or make them 100% complete but this will not reflect the original plan or the reality. Any suggestion?     - Graphic Indicators in Project Center OK, I have read as many posts on this subject, I apologize for the repeating topic...guess it says something about how MS could make this a bit easier...but anyway...I have created a schedule health graphical indicator on a project task number 1. If the difference between baseline finish and finish (or finish variance/480, as per a previous post) I have red, yellow and green indicators. works great in the project plan, at the task level...now I want to see this value in a Project Center view, where only the Project plans are listed...so I have tried to mark the customized task field for the indicator and indicating that the Project Summary task inherits from formula...when I try to save it, it reverts back to non summary tasks only...and the indicator does not show up in Project Center views that I have created. I know if I get a clear, step by step on one indicator I can follow it, but I feel like 'duh' when trying to follow some of the best books on this how to. Everybody seems to leave out a bit to consider. Can you provide any assistance...I have followed the previous links to some incredible material, kudos to all you 'Yodas' out there helping us 'rookies'...I just need some clarifications on how to get Project Center to work on a Task Number customized to show graphical indicators... Funny thing is when I go to make the change to Project Center view, and look at available fields, I do not see my specially named field, which I know I promoted to the enterprise, why does it not show up in my available list?     - Best way to track miscellaneous subtasks? Suppose I have a project to set up a retail website. Suppose one of the tasks is to get the login page working. This entails designing the screen layout, checking the information entered by the user, and other human factors considerations. So, I create a task named "Login page" and assign it to someone with a start date and a due date. At some point, the designer tells me it's up and we give it to some people to test. Some of the testers discover problems. I would like to enter each of those problems as a task to solve.     - Defining working hours, holidays, etc. I am setting up a new project. On page 30 of the Microsoft Step by Step book, it walks me through setting up the normal working hours for the company. I am wondering how much this matters, especially for my project. I am working on a software project. Most of the work, at least in the beginning, will be done by contractors working offsite. Some are paid by the hour and other by the task, but none of them work 8-5. I am guessing that these calendar settings will be used to calculate when each task will be finished based on estimated of days or weeks. So far, all of my tasks have been done with two estimates. I ask each contractor to submit estimates (bids) for (a) total cost (hours) and (b) completion date. They then work whenever they choose to get it done. I have some people working part time. They may estimate a task at only 20 hours, but set a completion date 3 weeks out. Others may estimate 100 hours of work, but promise it in 10 days. I am inclined to just set the calendar to "normal" (8-5) hours with standard holidays and then change it later if need be.     - Problem of .81 day in MS Project 2007 When I entered my tasks in MS Project and assigned a date e.g. Star Date: 26th Aug 2008 and Finish Date: 26th Aug 2008 then this task i considered as 0.81 day task and if finish date is 27th Aug 2008 the it's shown as 1.81 days task. We are interning in a software firm and are building a 3rd party Application that integrates into Microsoft Project using the Microsoft Project Server 2007 PSI Webservices. We are facing a problem that we will be grateful if you could solve. These are the kind of Projects which will be supplied by our application: 1. All the Resources we use must fit into the category of Enterprise Resources, since Status Updates through PSI are only possible with assignments of Enterprise Resources. We have such need of performing time-phased actuals updates on Resource Assignments. 2. Hence, the Global Resources must first be created in the Enterprise Pool if not found, and then be imported into the Project's Team. The flow of our algorithm for creating such a project given all the data is as follows: 1. First create the empty Project in Project Server using QueueCreateProject function. It will not have tasks and assignments yet. (roughly 1 second) 2. Go through the list of resources and create them in the Enterprise Pool if not already found. (roughly 1-2 secs) 3. Import those Enterprise Resources into the Project's Team by using QueueUpdateProjectTeam function. This step requires that the Project have been created in the first place, otherwise it throws an exception. (roughly 1-2 secs) 4. Now add the list of tasks and assignments to an empty Project DataSet. Use QueueAddToProject function to add the tasks and assignments to the Project created in step 1. (roughly 3 secs) 5. Finally Publish the Project. (roughly 4-5 secs) This way of doing things takes a lot of processing time, which we want to avoid. Whereas if the same steps are carried out using the Microsoft Project Client, the whole thing completes in one Queue Job called 'Project Save from Project Professional', which seemingly does all 6 steps in much lesser time. Are we missing something here? Is there a better way of doing the same thing that takes lesser time? What is the proper method to create such a Project in MS Project Server using the PSI?     - Getting Recurring Tasks to Display Info In Resource Report Good morning! Two part question: 1) I'm using the report generator ("View" -> "Report") to create a task usage (work) report. However, I can't get recurring tasks to display their work in the "totals" column. The only way to get it to show is to expand the task; I'd really like to have all of the recurring tasks collapsed when I generate the report. Is this possible? 2) Ideally what I'd REALLY like is a report that just shows resource utilization by time unit (e.g., week, month, etc), but DOES NOT show individual tasks or resources. Basically, I'm just trying to plot, over time, how many FTEs are needed to perform the work required by ALL tasks. I don't care if it's a line graph or bar graph. And if anyone's feeling particularly helpful/smart this morning: is there any way to combine/merge tasks? For example, Task 1 is called: "Bake Pie" and Task 2 is called "Taste Pie." The resources are the same, but utilization is much lower for Task 2. There is another task in between that is done externally to the project (let's call it "Remove Pie From Oven"), so my resources perform work, wait a given period of time, and then perform some follow-up work. Currently I have them as two tasks, with a FS+edays dependency. Is it possible to merge these non-consecutive tasks? Would I even want to? Or would I be better off leaving them as-is?     - Resource joining in the middle of a task I have the schedule as below in Project 2007: Task1 - Res1 (100%) - 21 days (duration) Task2 - Res2 (100%) - 45 days (duration) Both have same start dates. After task 1 is complete, Res1 will join task2 as 100%. How do I make this type of allocation?     - Weird behavior in scheduling In Project 2007, I have a task with work value of 24 hours. I assign Res1 and Res2 (100% each). Now the duration is 12 hours. So far, so good. Now, I add one more resource Res3 (100%). Now, the behavior seems to be inconsistent. Sometimes, the duration changes to 8 hrs. Sometimes, it changes to 16 hrs (which is wrong). Also, when it changes to 8 hours duration (the right one), when I reduce the resource allocation for Res3 to 50%, the duration changes to 16 hours instead of 9.6 hours duration. If I delete the Res3 and then add it again but this time when I add it I put only 50%. Now it shows 9.6 hrs duration (right one). So, I think if I update a resource allocation after it is added, it is not behaving correctly. If I add it with the right allocation in the beginning, it behaves correctly. I am confused. The task type is default (fixed units with effort driven checked). I am not sure what is going on? User error , bug in the tool??? Any help is appreciated. Based on current resource allocation, the work comes to about 700 man weeks. 80 man weeks is for buffer. I want MS Project show the work capacity. How can I get it to show this number? Hello hugh,

Double click on the resource name and on the Cost tab of the Resource
Information dialog, supply effective dates and new rates.
