You DON'T want to delete it if you need to preserve the actual work that was
performed on it, otherwise you will lose that data. I would recommend not
deleting the task, zero out the remaining work, and update the notes that
the task is no longer needed and was never fully completed. You can also
move the task to another section of the plan under a new heading called
"Tasks Not Needed" (after adjusting any dependencies). This way you
preserve the work that was done and can see what task were used at some time
on the project.
