Hello,
I would like to create a schedule in Microsoft Project for our
Manufacturing company and would like some advice before doing so. I will do
the automation in VBA (I know there are a newsgroup for that but that's is
not my main concern here).

We manufacture product. For each product, machines may varies. For
each machine, I have a different pool of resource that can work on it. I
mean, one person may be able to work on Machine A & B while another resource
may be able to work on Machine A & C. My main concern is being able to deal
with such knowledge from my people. Is there any way in Project I can deal
with that? What would be the best way to define everything?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Christian,

I can think of two ways to handle this, depending on what you need to
see on the schedule and whether you collect data on machine time or
not. Some companies charge hourly for machine time as well as labor
time while others only collect labor hours.

Method 1: Lay out your operations in the schedule in the sequence they
will be run. The tasks would be Milling, Grinding, Inspection,
Cleaning, Plating, etc. The machines involved in these operations
would be added as resources along with the people used to run them. So
under Milling would be resources of Bob, Jim and End Mill. This would
give you flexibility as to which machine to use along with the people.

Method 2: Layout the operations and the machines in the schedule in
sequence. Using this idea you would have a Summary Task for each
operation with the machine(s) involved in those tasks as subtasks. The
people resources would then be added at the subtask level related to
the machines.

I hope this gives you some idea on how to proceed. I'm sure others can
add to this as well.

Ok but then, If I use the Resource Leveling, how can Project compute the
optimal Schedule based on people limitation?
I mean, If I have two person that can work on one machine, I don't want to
put both of them as resources under an activity because Ms Project doesn't
know it only requires one and the other resource could work on another
product manufactured at the same time that use the same machine in another
room...

Any idea? Thanks for the help btw.

Hi,

It's quite simple really.
Project never, never, never, selects a resource for you.
Leveling will only handle the resources you assign.
If you find a logic that can make the selection and that you can program in
VBA, fine; but that looks like quite a task to me.

But if you can live with this (major?) limitation, I can definitely give
some advice on how to introduce and level the resources you select!
