How do I change cells with #### in Project?
For some reason some of my duration, start date and finish date cells say
"####" and I cannot change the information in these cells?
Does anyone know why this happens and/or how to fix it?

Tasks that are dependent not changing start dates
My setup is that I have many fairly small projects. The tasks are of short
duration 1-4 hours normally. If task #1 doesn't get started (For example it
was scheduled to start yesterday, I want the next task to be listed as
starting tommorrow not today as was originally scheduled. I won't necessarily
be opening that project or myslef even know that the task got started late,
but I don't want the next person in line thinking they have a task starting
today when the task above them didn't get done. I don't want it to show up in
their tasks. I have current projects set to 1 day.
I have set my dependencies up FS and added a day lag time. It doesn't seem
to recalculate until I enter something into the task above, but I want it to
keep moving the dates if it doesn't get started.

projected cost
When I go to "report" in the view menu and select the "cost" option, and
subsequently "budget", I see the five columns. I understand where the
"total cost" statistic comes from, but I don't understand the "projected
cost". How is it calculated and where in the program?

Strikethrough a word
Hello there,
When I complete a task, I would like to put a line through it, but keep it
visible. I'm sure that I've seen this before in a project plan.
Basically I would like to strikethrough the font, just like you can do in

summary progress
In the tracking gantt view, what is the summary progress bar showing. In
other words what is summary progress? Is it % complete, % work complete, or

Gannt Chart Question
Currently I'm using a split screen to view the resource sheet and a gannt
chart. as I click on each specific resource, the gannt chart displays the
tasks the respective resource is working on. So far so good...
Now, when right clicking in the open area in the gannt chart, and then going
to bar styles > text - the field under the 'right' row is displayed as
resource names.
Is there any way to simply show the name of the resource that I'm clicking
on in the resource sheet above and his respective percentage allocation

Schedule Progress
I am trying to show schedule progress on a summary bar. For example if I
have 60 hours of work to do over a ten week period, and 30 of these hours are
scheduled to be done in the first four weeks, and I have completed 30 hours I
want my summary progress bar to be 40% of the total summary bar rather than
50%. Consequently if 30 hours were scheduled over the first nine weeks and
the remaining 30 hours were scheduled for week ten, I would want to show the
progress bar as 90% of the total summary bar rather than 50. I thought I
could use a summary progress bar which starts at [start] and ends at [%
complete] to do this, but it doesn't look right. Any help would be

book pubishing process
I tried to post this question a few mins ago but I am not sure whether I have
managed or not. If this is appears to be a copy I am sorry.
I would like to track my resources in the period of several books pubishing.
I am entering the book's name as the task and the works to be done during the
process as ubtasks and assign resources for each subtask. For ex: I have
editors, graphic designers etc.. I would like to enter the total number of
pages for each book as the target work to be done and would like to ask from
each of my resource to enter the number of pages the have edited that day. Is

I want to show summary of total resource used on project as abar graph and

How do I measure actual progress % versus planned progress %
I am trying to report against my project.
I can't find a way of showing the progress which SHOULD have been made
according to the plan.
I want to show, by project phase, % of activity which was planned to have
completed and % of activity which has actually completed.

Track Estimated vs Actual work
Im trying to track my Estimated vs Actual work. when I enter the Actual Work
the Estiamted Work moves with that and therefore the whole schedule moves.
I want to be able to track my original estimates for reporting and learning
purposes so if I enter Actuals I dont want the Estimates to change.

Query - What if?
Hello folks,
Is there a function in Microsoft Project to ask the question "What if?"
(i.e. duration of several tasks changes/delays) and the program automatically
responds (somehow)? This would be in lieu of actually making adjustments to
the schedule and seeing what happens to the schedule! I don't think there is

How do I change task duration
in the Project 2003 template "Commercial Construction-1"?
I have saved the file to a different name, so I can edit it for my own use.
Most of the tasks are not relevant for my work, but I can use them to base my
own project on.
How do I unlock these fields so I can put in my own dates?
When I try to change the dates or duration they are always grayed out.

Deleted a filter, used by a view, and now cannot open the file
Hello,
I recently deleted a "filter" that was used by a "view". Apparantly that
must have been the default view because now when I try to open the file I get
the following error message:

The filter "V - DDI - ALL - NOHLT" cannot be found
You tried to display a view or use an import/export map that references a
filter that is not available.
- If you are trying to use a view, specify a different filter for the view
- If you are exporting with a map, the export will continue without the
application of a filter.

Then, when I click "OK" or even if I just click on the "X" in the upper
right hand corner I get the send error report message. Once that message
comes up the application hangs until I click either the "Send Error Report"
or "Don't Send" buttons.
My problem is that I can't get into the file to fix the filter/view problem.
Any suggestions?????

Multiple Resources & Resource Calendar
I have three resources that must meet to discuss as situation. I assigned all
three resources to the one task.
However, one of the three will be absent on specific date so I updated that
resource's calendar accordingly. When Project 2002 Professional determines
the start/finish dates, it uses the day the one resource is absent. If
remove the available resources, it does not schedule on that day.
Is there a way (other that updating each resource's calendar to say they
aren't available even though two are) to tell Project that all three
resources must be present and thus, not to schedule the day the one resource
is absent?

Level by priority
Is there any way to make project level by priority first, then by task
duration? "Priority, Standard" does not seem to do it- my short, high
priority tasks are still being delayed by lengthy low-priority ones. I
don't want to use the do not level setting because not all of these
high-priority tasks are of the same importance. Thanks for any help.

Resource graphs
I want to display graph showing aggregated resources asigned to project,
rather than separate graphs for each resource. If possible subset showing

Print preview screen is greyed out.
Can only print to the default printer on preview screen can't change to
another printer selection is greyed out. Everything else works fine when
printing File->Print and you can select printers that way, but not from
preview screen. I reinstalled project, haven't installed SR-1 for it yet but
going to.. Does anybody have any other ideas? (using 2000 Project)

Project Ownership
I know how to edit the ownership of a Project in Web Access and I also know
how to change the ownership in Project Pro. Is there a way that when the
ownership is changed in Project Pro that the ownership in Web Access is
automatically changed so that you don't have to go through those steps in
both places?

View Specific Date Range
I have a 5-year project schedule. My boss needs a way to view only a
3-month period (July 1, 2005 - September 30, 2005). I know I can print a
specific date range and filter a view for start date ranges.
However, I haven't been able to figure out how to view a range where I have
all tasks which start during the period and may finish after the end date (of
the desired view). I would need for Project to slice the gantt chart on the
desired end date.
Example:
Task A starts on 7/15/2005 and ends 6/1/2006. I want the gantt chart to
only show 7/15/2005 through 9/30/2005 (for now) and keep the rest hidden.

How can I have task data adjusted to wrap in Printing?
In Project 2000 it is easy to get data to wrap on screen, but can this then
be printed. It seems to just print as one line and lop off what is too long
for the field width. If the width is adjusted to print as one line, then the
text is too long. I have cut down the task description to the bare minimum

PWA - Project (Group) Web Sites
We are using MS Project 2003 & Project Server;
Is it possible to have many projects link to a single 'Share Point Services'
web address...??
My reason for this is that we have project managers who manage several
concurrent projects (ie a group of similar projects, for example ~ 'subsea
equipment projects' and 'surface equipment projects'), and our intention is
to have a website for a group of projects.
I cant see how to do this from the Manage Windows SharePoint Services page.
Any advice would be appreciated,

When I export from MSPrj2K to Excel the Summary activities are not included.
I have checked the Show Summary box in the filter as well as on the
Tools/Options/View tab.

How to resolve a gap in task ID numbering
I have a Project 2003 schedule that's been published to Project Server. In
Project, the task IDs have a gap, like this:

Tasks 4 through 7 are not shown. The schedule has no filtering, sorting, or
grouping applied. I've tried resorting by ID but with no luck. The missing
tasks 4 through 7 are simply nowhere to be found in Project.
I mentioned that this schedule has been published to Project Server. There,
can see the mystery tasks 4 through 7 in the Project Center view.
Back in Project, I'd like to show the missing tasks 4 through 7, delete
them, and have Project correctly renumber the remaining tasks. Any
suggestions on how to accomplish this?

Percent complete not rolling up to 100% - Project 2003
When I set all the subtasks to 100%, the summary task only show 99%. I can't
change the summary task % to 100 - it goes back to 99%.
I can't get the tasks to show complete and it is messing up my completed
tasks report and driving me nuts.
Everyone else on the project has Project 2003, and no one else is having the
problem. To make it worse, when they try to fix my file for me, it doesn't

Custom Indicators
I would like tag certain tasks in my project by entering information in
custom text fields (text1, text2 etc.) and have a custom indicator displayed
in the indicators column that identifies the tasks that I tagged so. How do I

% Complete not updating to Web Access
If PM updates the % complete in the project plan, without changing the total
work hours, the percent is not updated in the Tasks view for the resources on
the web. We tried publishing all information, and republishing al
assignments, to no avail.
Under collaboration options we also tried both options for 'Publish and new
changed assignments'
We need to do this because we are just getting started with Project Server
and Web Access, and the PMs wanted to just update the hundreds of already
started and completed tasks on ongoing projects, rather than have all the
resources enter all that actual time.

Duration changes with multiple resources
I have a project whose tasks total 600 hours. Of the 600 hours there are
tasks and sub-tasks. If I add multiple resources (let's say 3 resources) for
each task, the duration for each task shows 1/3 of the time of the total
task. (i.e. a task estimated at 30 hours will show a duration of 10 hours
after adding 3 resources at 100%). Project will also pull in the finish dates
reflecting 10 hours of work instead of 30 (which is fine).
How can I get Project to continue to reflect the actual total number of
hours of effort (in this case 600) with multiple resources performing each
task? My objective is to show that the project requires 600 hours of effort,
but will not require 600 consecutive hours for completion.

Graphical Indicators
I am using Microsfot Project 2000 - one of the fields I use folows the ROYG
philosophy for Project managemnet (Red, Orange, Yellow and green) - I

I am using Project 2000 - when I create and run a report, it appears in a
print preview window but I cannot create a file of any kind (eg. Doc or

Cum Work changing
I have a project plan that the Cum Work values will change as you move around
in the Timescale portion of the view. If you set your cursor on a particular
week so that week is the last week (we're using weeks as the display)
displayed, then either arrow or mouse click to at least 2 later weeks, then
return to the week in question, then the week after the week in question now
shows the value of the week in the Cum Work field you were just looking at
instead of its correct value.
If you arrow or click on another field in the Timescale portion, you will
see the Cum Work value change to the correct value.
Tried it on both Project 2002 and 2003, same problem in both, same problem
on multiple computers, same problem on multiple LAN's.
Anyone have a guess as to what is causing this?

for a project in PWA, where is the data saved? Is it possible use that data

Duration and Resources
I have understood most of the comments so far on fixed durations, etc. but
maybe someone can help me with this.
I have one task which is going to take 300 hours. I have entered this as a
fixed work task with a duration of 300 hours. Then I assign resources, there
are three and each has their own working calendar (one is a part time
worker). Project seems to be assigning each worker an equal share of the of
the work whereas I want to have the shortest possible duration - so my full
time resources should take a larger percentage of the task, right?? Wrong??
I have tried specifying fixed units, etc. but that all goes horribly wrong -
what I need to do is specify the work first, then specify the units and let
project calcuate the duration. How can I fix work and units?

Unable to installl Microsoft Project 2002
During the installation of Microsoft Project 2002 the Windows installer
appears and the window to enter product key opens. Before I am able to enter
the poduct key a popup window appears saying "Microsoft Project has been
successfully installed.
O/S is Windows XP and I am using Office 97.

Duration field rounding
The duration field automatically defaults to 2 decimal places (I am

How to get more columns in microsoft excel?

I have a text file(FTP from mainframes) where there are more than 400
fields.when i try to transfer from textpad to excel it throws error that all
the fields cannot be loaded.

Hotmail Password
Yesterday i went to sign into my hotmail email account through MSN Messenger,
and it said my email address was either wrong or my password was incorrect. I
have the account allready set up so i don't need to type anything i just need
to click the "Sign in" button. I haven't changed my password since i made the
