Auto Filter
I am attempting to apply an custom AutoFilter to the duration field. I
select "is greater than or equal to" from the drop down list of the Custom
AutoFilter dialog box and "3d" - click OK and I get the message "This is not
a valid test. Click the test in the list, and then press ENTER." I don't get
this error if I select just "equals" or "is greater than" by itself.

Problem with calendar view
When I access the "Calendar View" from either the view menu or the side bar,
a number of my tasks are not visible. They have not been hidden, nor are
they in any way different in priority etc (at least as far as I can tell)
from the tasks that do appear. The date blocks have nice little arrows in
the top left hand corner telling me that there are tasks hiding below and
one can see what they are by selecting the right click option of "Task
List....". This is next to useless to me and certainly not what I expected.
If I drag (enlarge) the date blocks so that only one week is visible on the
screen I can see most but not all the missing task bars except that in this
case I loose the nice little arrows telling me there is more below. I can
drag the task bars to the top of the date windows at the risk of disturbing
Project's calculations. I have a 300 line project, perhaps not big by some
standards but too big to have to go through a process like this.
Can anyone please tell me why I am getting this result and how to painlessly
fix it? Why should the task bars be separated vertically in the same date
block when in all instances they are predecessor/successor, the same
priority etc etc.? The only thing I can think of is that they are not
always on consecutive lines ie their ID numbers are not consecutive, but
that is no excuse for a program allegedly as powerful as MS Project 2003.

wgsetup and resource pool
Hi
We have windows 2000 & XP/MS Project 2003. We have a resource pool .mpp
file with approx 20-25 projects at a time linked to it and about 45 staff in
it(at the moment - could get bigger if this works!). We are contemplating
installing/configuring some sort of email/workgroup collaboration. MS
Project Server or resource pool and wgsetup?
From the vast range of experience out there based on the situation above
what do you recommend? There is a considerable financial (and technical)
investment involved with Project Server but it should provide more
functionality and better resource management capabilities. Wgsetup (a feature
which isn't particularly well advertised by MS) seems to provide a cheap and
reasonably painless method of communicating for project staff. I know this
is a bit general and non-specific but I would appreciate any comments/advice
from anyone who has implemented wgsetup v server.

Rounding fractional durations
Hello,
Project is creating fractional day durations because I have fixed work
tasks, and when it levels resources, sometimes it moves people to work
part time on tasks, and this results in a fractional duration. Is

I would like to add a column after the task that shows a job number. When I
view the resource useage sheet I want this job number to show up after the
task. I have added a column Number1 and renamed it to job #. I also added a

WINPROJ.exe generated errors while printing
one of our users received the subject error message while printing a project.
The individual is able to successfully print other projects. This same file
can be printed by me on an identical printer. Any ideas what could be

Integrating 3 Schedules and Tracking Slips
My company and 2 others are working together on building a product, and have
been asked to integrate all of our schedules. After discussion, we are going
to use an approach such that we create a Master "shell" schedule, that links
to the sub-schedules. Since all 3 companies are working as a collaborative
effort, there are dependencies between each company. Company A cannot start
work until Company B finishes their portion. In order to properly track
these tasks, we are going to create milestones in the Master Shell, that link
to each company's task so that we can easily track when something is slipping
or not. If Company A slips their finish date by 1 week, then that will push
the Shell Milestone, which will then push Company B's start date. We chose
to have this milestone's in a seperate schedule/section to easily track
deliverables. Whenever the shell schedule is opened, it automatically links
to the subschedules, and get's the most up to date information. My question
is, is there an easy reporting mechanism, in project that shows how many
dates each milestone moves? I am looking for like a Before/After snapshot of

Default View
I would like to have the default view of my Project file to be the Gantt
Chart. I have followed the directions of the help file: Tools -> Options,
click on the View tab and select the default view you wish.
However, I have this set to Gantt and when I open the file, it always opens
in the Resource Usage view.
When opening the file, I can see the Gantt view for a brief second and then
the Resource Usage view opens instead.
I have tried changing the default view to other settings but the Resource
Usage one is all that will open on default.
Any ideas on how to correct this?

Actual work changes when importing a project
While importing some project-files (Project 2002, non-
enterprise) to project 2003 server (enterprise projects),
I noticed that for some projects the actual work that has
been entered by the resources differs between imported
file and original files. The sum of actual work for the
task remains the same, but the hours are spread
differently. I need to keep the original values.
The redistribution happens when starting the import wizard
for enterprise projects (immediately after selecting the
file). Only some resources and tasks seem to be affected.

Outlining tasks in subprojects
How can I have better control in outlining tasks of subprojects and the
Master Project so that they are in synch,,i.e., they have the same outline
structure. When I try to adjust (indent, outdent) the task outline , MS
Project prohibits me from doing it.

hi,
I am looking to generate a planned vs. actual variance
graph (in Excel) for the % Complete column in Project. I
would like to use this metric to identify the delta in
progress for the project completion and identify schedule
slip. Can this be done through a wizard or other Project

is scheduling from a finish date the best way to approach this scenario
Hi Guys
normally i try to avoid scheduling from a finish date, but i've come across
a project question that seems to only really be possibly by doing this and
i'm wondering if i'm approaching this from the right angle.
the project is to schedule the advertising and recruitment of a large number
of people over a 12 - 18 month period. The recruitment process for each
employee takes up to 100 days and the employment process needs to be
staggered over this period. So employee 1 needs to commence on 1 May 2005,
employee 1500 needs to commence on 1 August 2006 - if the company is to
commence trading on 1 Sept 2006.
These dates are dependent on the expected commencement date of the company
trading which is still in the "feasibility" stage at the moment. So what
they're looking for is to say, if the company was to commence trading on 1
Sept 2006 when does employee 1's recruitment process have to start ... if
the company's trading date commencement is the 1 Nov 2006 when does employee
1's recruitment process have to start etc.
Currently the project is set up to schedule from a finish date with a
project finsih date of 1 Sept 2006, Each employee's recruitment process is
listed out with the employee title as the summary task and a milestone at
the end which is linked to the project finish milestone with a lag to give
the "right" gap (ie the main manager needs to be on-board 16 months prior to
the commencement of trading) etc.

Linking to summary tasks
One of our customers at work recently suggested that linking to a
summary task wasn't good practice. Does anybody agree and can suggest
why this is so?
Sometimes we have lots of lower level tasks and if a summary task

Master Projects
I have created a template to use for creating individual similar
projects. I have also created a shared resource pool. Becuase the
individual projects are similar and I am using a template, a lot of the
task names remain the same across projects. The difficulty arises when
trying to join the individual projects into a master project. When
looking at the various views, tables, etc, for example resource usage,
it is impossible for me to tell which of the individual projects the
task names refer to.
Is there an easy way to identify the individual project tasks within
the different views? I'm working in Project 2003. (this is my first
posting, so I hope I'm making myself clear enough).

Updating the schedule with progress
I am looking for help in identifying the best way to update a schedule
for progress on a weekly basis. At the moment where I work we are just
updating the dates and adding a % complete.
However, I now think that it would be more realistic to do the
following each week:
Request a new finish date for any tasks that are already in progress
Request an updated start date and duration of any tasks that should
have started.
Then update progress on the tasks through to the current date.
I feel that this shows that tasks are taking longer for example and
shows visibility of where the project is running late.
I know that some people update the % complete and then re-schedule but
we are reliant on our subcontractors updates and we need to be given
finish dates from them really in order to notify another subcontractor
when they can start a successor activity for example.
Does any body have any views on this or an example of an updating
process that you use.

Error When importing Word Document
I have Project 2003 Pro. I am able to import a visio document into the
project file and a graphic, but when I attempt to create a new word document
or import an existing word document I receive a "OLE Object Can not be
displayed." error message. It also states to close all other programs to make
more memory available. I have a 2.3 GHz Pentium 4 with a Gig of Ram and 15
Gigs of Hard drive space available on my primary drive.

We use a grouped resource pool for all our company projects. To record Leave
we set that persons leave period to 'non-working' time. To get back this
information for all resources we need a report / table / view that tells us
when this Leave has been entered.

How to open an MPX file with in-place activation in IE?
How is it possible to open an MPX file through a browser and have it open
using "in-place activation", that is, opening inside of the browser window?
Currently, MSproject opens separately and the MPX file is loaded into that
window separate of the browser.
What I am trying to do is have a web-based program (written in PHP) generate
an MPX file and display a MSP2k-based gantt chart inside the IE browser
window. Perhaps there is an OLE container available that runs in-place, but
then load MSP passing it the MPX?.??

Project provide way to identify driving predecessor (* maybe?)
Project should provide a way to identify the driving prececessor and
successor in the task details form or entry form. At first I thought it was
the first one on the list, but that was not the case. Perhaps the driving
pred/succ could be bold or have an asterick (*) beside it. If more than one,

I tried again on Project 2000 (with a 40h/w calendar) and on Project 2003
(with a french 35h/w calendar) : the result is the same: all the
calculations on standard durations are short by one day. On elapsed
durations (with "ed"), the result is good.

Finish to finish depency question
I have 3 tasks A, B, and C
Suppose:
Task A begins on Day 1
Task B ends on Day 10
Task C has a duration of 5 days. I want it to have a start to start
dependency with Task A, and a finish to finish dependency + 2 days with
B.
The problem is that Project is scheduling task C to end on Day 12 and
start on Day 7, even though it can potentially start on Day 1. I need
task C to be scheduled on Day 1 because I am going to have another task
with a start to start dependency with task C.
As I am new to Project, I was curious as to how you would model this in
Project to achieve my desired behavior.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Problem with links and constraints
I have a couple projects in which I linked all the tasks, and it set the
time line up as expected. Now if I go into them and modify the "work" of a
particular task, the task next in line does not adjust the start date
accordingly. The constraint type is "as soon as possible", but no matter
what I do with predecessors (even delete links altogether) the start date of
the task in question does not change. I can modify the start date by
actually changing the start date in the task information dialog, but I know
I've had this work properly in the past.
Any Clues???

Monthly Material Charge
How do I get Project to allocate an even monthly charge, like Software
Maintenance over the life of the program.
I've tried to prorate a Fixed Cost, but it spreads it according to the days
in each month, not evenly (same charge) for each month.

Issue with saveing project to Project Server
Morning All,
I am having to call upon your expertise once again. I will keep this
problem high level.
When a plan is created outside the Project Server, the end date and the
leveling process is correct. If you click level project, the little bar in
the bottom will click a few bars every few seconds. Everything works out
great.
But when you take the plan to the server it will ask you to replace the
resouces with people that match in our resource pool's whos ids are pulled
from Active Directory. I will click yes, then it will take all of the
leveling out of the plan. MS Project will decided that everyone can work
30-40 hours in each day that they are assigned to a task.
It seems it is stacking the tasks with the same start dates and not leveling
them like it should, when I click level project I do clear out the prior
leveling and it will be level in less than a second but the dates will not
change to the correct date.

Hi,
Has any one had problems with users with Outlook integration receiving
multiple entries for the same project everytime the tasks are updated and
re-published.
Also when you try to delete the duplicates you receive an unknown Error
code: 14.

Actual hours in MSP
Hi,
We are trying to put weekly actual hours in Microsoft
Project from our financial system through an import macro
that we`ve created. However, we have the following
problem: our month end date does not match. Ie. the end
of the month in our financial system could be March 18th
and in MSP, the month end date is March 31st. Is there a
way to change this in MSP? (Also, our month end dates are
never the same from month to month). The results of this
problem is that our actuals at the end of the month never
match between MSP and our financial system.
