It is my understanding that earned-value calculations only apply upto the
specified Status Date. My problem is that I have earned-values being
calculated and displayed on a tasks (which have %0 completed work) that start
AFTER the Status Date. This eventually causes problems because as work is
actually completed on such tasks the earned-value numbers are incorrect
because they include the values that were prematurely calculated. Has anyone
observed similar behaviour ? Is there some MS-Project setting I'm overlooking
that enforces earned-value calculation being cutoff at the Status Date ?

Sounds like you may have some issues with actual versus scheduled dates.
If you enter work progress without also showing the actual dates on which
the work was performed things are going to get mighty confusing.
