hi,
i got a situation. i have a pool of material resources. these materials have
some standard cost on each unit being used. so i defined per use cost for
each for them. but for some task if i use 2 units of that material resource,
then the per use cost is accounted for only one unit.

is there a way by which i can calculate the peruse cost for each unit of
material resource being used?? someone pl help me out..

thnx & regards
Eswar

Eswar,
To manage Material resource cost, don't use the "Cost per use" field but the
simple "Std. Rate".
For example : Resource name = Concrete
Material label : Metric Ton
Std. Rate: 50$ (means 50$ / Metric ton)

If you assign this resource on a task : units = 2 (2 Metric tons)
Project will calculate the material cost : 2 x 50 = 100 $

Hope this helps,

hi gerard,
thnks for that. i have already set up that standard cost. wht i want is :
every time that resource is used there is some additional cost incurred. like
burden. i want that cost to be included in the budget. is there a way for
that?

You could create a custom resource field (type: COST) with a formula.
This will work if your overhad (burden) factor is standardised.
Take the Std Cost and multipy it by your uplift factor.

The "cost per use" is a fixed cost that will be charged you budget each time
the resource is assigned. The behaviour is the same whether we're talking
about a material resource or a work resource. For materials, I have a
resource that costs $10 standard rate and $5.00 per use and assign that
resource to one task for that uses 5 units, my cost is $10/unit * 5 units +
$5/use for a total of $55. If I assign the same resource to 5 tasks that
use 1 unit each, my cost is $10/unit * 1 unit/task * 5 tasks + $5.00/use * 5
uses for a total of $75.00

thanks for that steve.
hi paul,
thanks for that. i am almost near to the solution from your reply. but only
if i could understand wht u ment by:

"This will work if your overhad (burden) factor is standardised.
Take the Std Cost and multipy it by your uplift factor. "

i am in a learning stage.. :-)

Hi Eswer,
I'm assuming you are trying to assign an extra cost (you call it a burden)
onto your material cost? This is common accounting practice.
If this is this is the case and if the burden is a constant (e.g. Add a set
% to the material cost) you can create a custom field which uses the material
cost as the base and multipy it by the constant.
When I say the burden needs to be standardised I mean it should be a fixed
%, i.e. the business want to add 20% to all material costs!! The 20% is fixed
and can therefore be used in the formula based custom field.

Paul

Hope this clarifies my answer.
