Total Resource Cost
First let me set the stage.
I have created my resource sheet to include an hourly standard rate per
resource.
On tasks that require multiple resources, I want the system to add the total
sum verses coming with an average. Example four resources @ $50 per hour
should show a total cost of $200.00 for a one hour activity verses the
average of $50.

Where'd my resources go?? Help!
I have created a project with all of my tasks and durations entered and
linked it to a master schedule. I then created a resource pool file and
linked the master schedule to the resource pool.
Since I'm doing all of the scheduling in the master schedule I clicked on
assign resources and there they were. As soon as I clicked on a task to
assign someone to ... there they went. So essentialy there are no resources
available to task.
I checked my resource sheet and all of my resources are listed at the top. I
verified my calenders and insured that all resources were available 100% of
the 7.5 hour work day (1/2 hr. off for clean up, etc.) So where are my
resources going when I try to select a task for them???

Date Changes each time I level
If i open a project and level it, clear leveling and level again right away I
get different finish dates and percent complete. I tried it about five times
in row and each time got a different date and percent complete. Any ideas

Managed Time Periods
What are the rules around DELETING a managed time period? Can you only do it
if no actual hours exist for the period? The delete option is greyed out in
all of our time periods. Also, when you delete the period, will all data in

Need to show breaks and text in Gantt Chart for one task.
I need to show breaks in the Gantt Chart, like multiple milestones of one
task. The chart needs to continue until my finish date, but inbetween i need
to indicate when, on which date the work is 30%, 50%... done. As well I need

Any way to apply a filter automatically upon opening a file?
I've created multiple consolidated project files to view our project plan
from different viewpoints, using different Gannt bar formatting and by
applying different filters. However, if I want someone else on the team to
see the same view, I have to explain to them to open the file and apply a
special filter. This doesn't go over very well. Is there way I can have a

How to save a form, how to use Access forms in Project?
I created this customized form for entering data in Project 2000. The
problem is it only appears on my computer, although I saved this on the
global template using the organizer feature. I am afraid I am going to lose
this form when I get a new computer this week. Is there a better way to save
it?
Also, I've noticed it is much easier to create forms in Access than it is in
Project - there is a lot more functionality e.g. you can copy and paste

Hi,
Is there any way to export the calender view in MSP 2003 to project
server view or some where else? Not to excel.
I want a web page containg the calender view of MSP 2003. That is when

Project Profitability
I can record a resource rate as an internal cost to my company, or as an
external rate that I charge clients. What I'd like to be able to do is track
my project's profitability by tracking the difference between the two, given
that the initial estimate I quote clients based on the external rate remains
constant. I've looked in books, and through Project's help files, but can't

Create a "Custom" Field
How can I create a custom field that will show the "Projected % Complete"
based on the current status date. I want to be able to compare the actual %
complete with where it should be. I would also like to be able to show in a
custom field the "current complete through date" for a task. This would be
very useful in understanding a Late Task. This will be a visual aid for my
customers that greatly speeds our project reviews. Your help will be greatly
appreciated.
I'm looking for a way to show where a
% complete should be on the status date. If the task is late, and shows 33%
complete, but on the status date it should be 41% complete I want to be able
to show that as well as the "Complete Through Date" this will give a visual
reference. Hypothetically - a task is 33% complete with a complete through
date od 12/30/05, but on 1/10/06 the status date, it should have been 41%

Can I "hide" tasks?
In printing and reviewing Gantts, I have many tasks that are either not used
or completed. I would rather these task not be displayed to keep the Gantts
as simply and small as possible. Deletion is not an option for many reason,
one being the integrity of the outline numbers.

MS Project's future?
Hi everyone,
Does anyone know what Microsoft's plans are for Project in the future? From
what I understand, the latest version of Project is 2003 and I haven't seen
anything yet about a newer version coming out. Also, I was looking to
attend training and get Microsoft's certification for Project, but have
noticed that no certification seems to be available anymore via a class. I'
m assuming the MVP certification is still available but to my understanding
that isn't available via a training course. Anyway, I'm just curious if
Microsoft intends to continue on with Project or if they're going to
introduce a different line of software to replace it. Any insight you have
would be greatly appreciated.

Questions about Project Server
Hi everyone,
My company is contemplating making the move to MS Project Server and I'm
researching whether or not it will be a wise move. We've been trying to
implement the standalone PC version for several years now and have been
encountering widespread resistance (the staff doesn't want to give up
Excel). Our initial thinking was to get everyone up to speed with Project
on their computers and then make the jump to a Project Server environment.
However, I'm beginning to think we are perhaps hamstringing our efforts by
not offering the services that MS Project Server can provide. Also, we have
received several requests recently from our project managers for e-mail
notification of tasks, et cetera, to their teams. Have any of you
encountered the same situation at your companies? If so, do you have any
advice?

Can allocation outline be ignored for linked tasks in another proj
I am using outlining to identify all my tasks.
When I link a task in another project, tha link task is displayed and an
outline number is assigned(effectively giving that task 2 ooutline numbers:
one in this project and another in the original project). I have selected "
do not display linked task" but the outline numbers remain disrupted.
Can outlining be ignored for linked tasks in another project?

Group by Custom Field Order
Is there a way to group by "order" or "row number" in the custom attributes
of a custom field? I am only able to group by a field and assign
ascending/descending order and would like to my group follow the order I have
in the custom attributes section.

Project Files Missing VBA
I have recently seen a couple of MSP files that are getting an error saying
that the file is Missing VBA, this shows up when the file is opened or any
macros are run. When I open the VBA editor, there is no listing in the
Project Explorer frame for the file that has the error. Modules that are
contained in the global file can be exectuted against the file missing the
layer. I am trying to identify what is causing the VBA layer of the file
getting deleted. Has anyone else seen this happening or know what is causing

Scheduling Resources based on availability
I am currently trying to complete a Gantt Chart for a project i am managing.
I need to schedule specific tasks based on the availability of each
individual resource. For instance, i can not have two parts programmed at the
same time because there is only one programmer working this job. I also
cannot have two parts machined at the same time because we only have one of
that specific machine. I was told there is a way to achieve this ability, but
i am unsure as to where to start.

Managing One Project with Multiple Sub-Projects
The situation: I manage one project that has six different areas that I want
to treat as sub-projects - each of the six areas has its own lead or project
manager and each needs to manage his/her own schedule.
My goal: Each lead gets control over their schedule and resources, and we
have a file that we can see the tasks and milestone for each area in one
place.
So, I am thinking that I have one .mpp that is the Resource Pool, and six
individual .mpp's that the leads control, and one Master .mpp with each of
the six sub-projects inserted into it.
So, the questions:
1. Is the resource pool going to be a problem? If a lead has to open the
Resource Pool .mpp every time they want to work on their sub-project .mpp, it
basically means that no one else can work on their sub-project until the
Resource Pool .mpp is free. Is this correct?
2. Levelling: The leads will level their sub-projects, do I want to level in
Master .mpp as well? Does this run the risk of changing their levelling and
their plans?
3. Do we all need to level the same way, and set each person's levelling
options to be the same and keep it that way?
I am reading the MS Project help section, going through this message board
and re-reading the Tech Trax website, but any help or advice would be greatly
appreciated, either with answers here or links to external information.

Spooler Errors
Hi,
I have Project 2003 Pro, and a Project Server installation and
successfully installed SP2a - I am an administrator.
I am still seeing spooler errors on administrative projects. These
project updates turn up as Updates (I own them the projects) on my
Project Web Access and I accept them, I am then prompted to save the
Project File to complete which I do.
They then do not go away. I also get a spooler error 0x80040E14.
This seems specific to Administrative Projects. Can anyone supply me
with some pointers for the resolution of this?

Adding vertical, task or time driven lines on a Gantt
Hello,
During our projects there are three or four critical phases after which
other tasks commence. While these tasks are linked to milestones, we always
end up hand-drawing coloured lines on the printed Gantts to visually show the
phases. Manually drawing lines on the Gantt is very clumsy for this purpose
(Multiple vertical lines required, lining them up, manually moving them if
the date changes, etc.)
Can I create vertical lines (similar to the Status date) that are task or
time driven that display the top to bottom of the project?

Cannot change start date for a task
Hi,
Every time I try to change the start date for a particular task, it
adds a constraint of Start No Earlier Than but doesn't change the start
date. Consider the following example
TASK 1
Start Date: 1/11/06
End Date: 1/11/06
Duration: 4hr
Predecessor: N/A
Now if I try to change the start date to 1/9/06, it doesn't change the
date but just adds the No Earlier Than constraint.
Any reasons why Project would do that?

Access/Project Interface
I'm not familiar with Project. I work in Access, and have been developing my
company's database.
Now there are some folks who want to use some of the database's information
for Project, because it makes prettier reports (for project scheduling) than
Access can. And probably it will do more for them than that, so it's a good
tool for what they want to do.
From what I've been able to glean in this newsgroup, saving Project data
into Access on a regular basis seems to work better than saving Access data
into project. Is that accurate, or is it an artifact of being in a Project
newsgroup?
I have a number of reasons I would prefer to go the Access into Project
route: I have considerably more expertise in Access than the Project users
have in Project--I don't trust what kind of input forms they will come up
with, or what timetable they will be on; I would prefer to put in place
something that will give them the data and then let them worry about whether
they can get Project up and running the way they want to; I think I want to
capture some data from the schedule input people that Project people will
probably have no use for (e.g. does this person get copies of mail on this
project, and if so, what kind). However, I do not want to set something up
that is either impossible or drastically cumbersome to implement in terms of
the interface. My hope would be that we could find something which would let
a person get the data from Access--ideally, a proceedure which could
automatically be done at the end of a day or end of a week so that the two
systems stayed pretty much in sync with each other. Is this possible? Or do
I have to find a Project book and start studying?

Roll up bars to summary task
Just to spesify my question:
What I have is a summary task with two recurring task at the next indent
level.
Each of this recurring task is created buy 5 sub-tasks. These subtasks
have I formatted by using Flag.... So these tasks are flag tasks with
specified colours. I have managed to roll up the flag task to the recurring
task, but I also want it to be rolled up to the summary task level. Using
the same colour and grid as on the task itself
All my task has marked Yes in the column roll up.

Can't change "Data entry options" in Value List dialog
When customizing enterprise project text fields, I can't select the option to
"Allow additional to be entered into the field". It is greyed out. The

Outlining in Master projects
As opposed to using outlining columns, I am using task outlining both for
legability, indenting the number with the txt, printing and export reasons.
However I need each sub-project to start with a different number. Currently
I am using blank tasks to force the numbering.
Using Outlining in the text, can I define a start number?
When I place a sub-projects into a master project the sub numbers all
commnece with 1.
Can I retain the outline numbers so that tasks under "7.0 Project name "
expands to 7.1, 7.1.1, etc?
