    - Remove a task from the critical path How can you remove a task from the critical path? I have a hammock task that moves with the end date, but its not critical. It moves with the end date because its a support task that needs to keep going as long as the project is going.     - Material Resource overload Hi, I have a question on overloading materials in MS project 2003. when you create work resources you can set max units so it will show you the overallocation of your resource.     - Scheduling with a deadline while behind schedule Here is my problem: I'm currently scheduling so that production ends on the deadline however we are behind schedule. When I update the schedule to move all of the late tasks to the current date it just piles them up on that date with no regard for predecessors. I realize the problem is that I'm scheduling with conflicting constraints but is there some way to resolve this? I would like to spread everything throughout the time window and maybe adjust the max units of my resources to account for overallocations. Thanks for your help.     - Managing Consultants I'd like to set up consulting assignments as tasks in my project. I'd like to be able to record invoice amounts against the contract value. This does not need to take the place of the % completion calculation, but rather, provide a method to summarize the actual costs to date. Example: Hire an architect to design a building. The contract is for $30,000. At the end of the first month, I recieve an invoice for $7453.22. The second month I recieve an invoice for $6781.58. How can I show this in MS Project?     - Excel VBA to create and populate a MS Project file What i have now is a Project file with "links" that whenever a change is made to the outlook file, it's reflected in the Project file, but it's not working out exactly how we'd like it to. I am unable to remove the links using a macro/VBA in excel (Where all of the operations are running from) so the file always asks if one would like to update the linked information whenever changes happen in the Excel file, which is not what we want. Once exported, the Project file should become static. A Project file that has all of the information that was displayed in the above table at the time of running the macro, but will not change or ask to be updated. Of course there probably are other ways to do this better, like Projects mapping feature to open an exported XLS file or possibly just simple copy/pasting within the macro, but i can't for the life of me figure my way around the syntax and funtionality of controlling Project from Excel. I'm going to try and summerise just to be clear. 1) Data in excel populates the a table with info for the tasks, start/end dates and resources of a specific project. 2) A button labelled "Export to MS Project" is clicked in the Excel file. 3) A series of VBA steps end with a MS Project file saved and closed which contains all of the Task Names (5 to 10 of them), Start and end dates, and resources from the excel file.     - Slip task I understand how to split a task, but here is my problem: Task Start date of 4/11/05 - Finish date of 5/24/05 (20 days duration) There was a interrupt to ONLY this task that delayed the task from starting/finishing on time, the delay started on 4/11/05 resume work on 4/28/05 (duration 13 days). Instead of an interrupt to the calendar (cause this will effect all of my task) I split the task - I can't get the split to start on that day, it wants to start on the 4/12. My question is: Is there any way of adding columns for split task that shows "Stop Work" (date), "Resume Work" (date), and "Duration of Interrupt" (days?     - Outlook Integration Wizard / Addin for Project 2003 I use Project 2003 Pro - standalone, with no server tiein. I would love to have the tasks synched up with outlook tasks. I have been hunting for the addin but I cannot find it. Is it a component of the server? or can I use it without the server component.     - How to change pjDate_Www_dd ? A question that many people has asked in MP forums is not yet responded. When we choose the date format w5/1, MP shows dates in this new format, but the problem is that the week showed might not be the one we need. For example, as of this week, MP shows W29/4 for today, and what I understand, and also I need, is to show W30/4 (for the same date, July 21, 2005) Is there a way to create a macro to change how MP displays that date when the date format W5/1 (pjDate_Www_dd) is choosen ?     - Resource usage and graph I have a project which has the working time calendar set to 6 hours of productive labor a day. That leaves 2 hours for meetings, and other not project related activities. For one resource the "Resource Usage" for a given day shows 6 hours, in red, and the "Resource Graph" shows 200%. I don't get it. I can see how there may be a calculation rounding issue and it would allocate e.g., 101%, but not 200% unless it assumes that resources only come in integral increments.     - Resourcing will not feed through to pool On numerous occasions we have resourced plan with resources from the pool and the following occurs; -within the entry view the name of the assigned resource appears in the resource name column -the name appears adjacent to the activity in the Gantt chart Both outcomes expected, however, -within the Resource Usage view there are no work hours defined for that resource. -the EAC field does not recognise the resource cost as it believes it is not assigned. We have found a temporary work around which resolves the issue. We have to take the resource units down to 0% apply the change then reset it to the desired units of 100%. There is no consistency in this error as it has occurred on different plans at different times with different resources. Can anyone help me resolve this glitch as it is incredibly inefficient to have to keep checking every resource to ensure the work hours have been recognised? Kind Regards.     - Sending info to client without including cost data I am currently working on a project as a subcontractor. I need to send my MS Project file to the prime contractor but do not want to send my resource cost data? I have to send the whole file because the prime needs to integrate my schedule with their master schedule. Their purpose is for overall tracking of the schedule, not cost. Any suggestions on how to effectively forward the schedule but remove the cost data? My first thought was to password protect the resource sheet; however, that doesn't seem to be an option.     - how to print tasks limited by timescale I think I found the answer to this (or even posted this same question) but lost it. So, if you guys don't mind. Here is the question again. In File|Print there is an option to set a time range to print. This limits the timescale, but it doesn't affect the tasks that are printed. Is it possible to make Project print only the range of tasks that are affected by the date range? When I used a filter to exclude the other tasks, it resulted in a bunch of summary task bars.     - MSProject crashes when monitor display settings change. I'm unable to display live project files through a projector. The project foreces a display settings change on my laptop.     - MS Project gives gbui://blank.htm error. Registry patch not work When starting MS Project 2003 Standard, I receive an error message about gbui://blank.htm or gbui://main.htm. The only way out is to end task through Task Manager. There is a registry tweak listed at MSDN.com, and also a "Re-install IE6 SP 1" procedure. However, Windows will not allow a re-install of IE6 SP1 since I already have WinXP SP2 installed along with newer updates. None of these options appears to correct the problem.     - I'm losing bar format colours when using Gantt Chart Wizard Hi all This is a very simple question, I hope: I have coloured in some task bars in my Gantt Chart using 'Format Bar'. This is to help me see, for instance, which tasks are being done by external bodies. If I then highlight the critical path using the Gantt Chart Wizard, some of these tasks are coloured in red - fair enough. If I then try to go back to my 'non-critical path view' using the Gantt Chart Wizard, I seem to have lost my previous bar formatting! All bars have reverted to the default colour.     - Resource levelling, timesheets and task dates Hi all, I've got a problem with the dates that Project is calculating for me when I level resources. It is setting dates for incomplete tasks to be in the past when of course I want them to be scheduled for the future. I have about 70 projects containing incomplete tasks. The project actuals have all been entered using the timesheet function in PWA and these have been accepted by the project manager (me). I opened all the projects from PWA so that they loaded under a master project into Project Professional. When I levelled resources, Proj Prof calculated new task dates, but many of them were in the past causing the resources to be overallocated and making a total mess of the project schedule. These project tasks do not have date constraints forcing them to be in the past. Following advice I have read elsewhere, I cleared levelling, then used the Tools->Tracking->Update Project->Reschedule uncompleted work option. When I try this over the "Entire project", it does nothing. When I try this with "Selected tasks" it sets a date constraint on those tasks to the date I specify - this works but I really don't want to have to do this for each of the 70 projects every time I level resources. I want Proj Prof to be smart enough to schedule incomplete tasks to start after the date of the last timesheet entered for each resource. Suggestions anyone?     - Critical path does not trace to beginning of project My project's Gantt Chart is formatted to show critical path. What I'm finding is that only the last few tasks are colored red to indicate the critical path. Why wouldn't it show the critical path all the way back to the first task in the critical path? I am looking for the opinions of those who have experience with Niku
Workbench (which is a project management software program similar to MS
Project).

How does Workbench compare to Project?
Is there a big learning curve? Seems like there would be.
How is the support?
Can anyone suggest readings to compare the two products? I have not seen a
single book on Workbench.

Any viewpoints on the two products would be most appreciated.
