    - single resource partially tasked on multiple projects I have a single that is tasked with a fixed duration task. This sets them to 25% utilized during that task. I'm trying to also task the same resource to an additional fixed duration task that would add roughly another 25% utilization. However, project is not letting the two tasks exist concurrnetly with the same resource, even though the resource is not wholly utilized. Even though predecessors are not set, it's forcing the first task to be complete before the second begins. I'd like to have the two tasks exist concurrently and show the resource's total utilization between the two tasks. I'm sure it's just a setting I'm not famliar with or something simple I'm not doing.     - Entering actual work in a "timesheet" view I have created a programme of work in MS Project (2002) with the intention that myself and my colleagues can book actual work (per day) into a timesheet view using the Task Usage screen. However, I have experienced some unusual results when testing this. For example, I have created a fixed duration task of 5 days, starting on a Wednesday and finishing the following Tuesday. Three resources have been assigned to this task, each with 2h work (0.4h per day), so a total of 6h over a 5 day period. As part of my test, I entered some actual work - 1h on the Friday for one of the resources. I had expected to see the second hour of work spread equally across the remaining 2 days duration of the task (i.e. 0.5h per day), but instead MSP extended the task by a further 2 days, to the Thursday, and allocated 0.25h each day. I have tried a few things to get around this, such as setting constraint dates on the task and unchecking the "effort driven" flag, but to no avail.     - Incorrect Expiration Date When I was researching the trial download of Microsoft Project 2007 it said the trial download period was for 180 days (6 months). I completed my download last night and a window popped up saying my copy will expire in March. That's less than two months away.     - Resource Calendar If I want to give my resources an hour of "off time" for them to do other work during the day, what is the best approach? I could change either their own individual calendar for individuals or modify the Standard Calendar, or create a new base calendar for those resources and make the break from noon - 2 instead of noon - 1. But what if I don't care at what time they execute their duties, as long as it gets done sometime that day.     - Actual % complete versus Planned % complete Hello, When you add the column "% complete" in MS Project, you can enter the actual % complete. I would like to add a column, that shows the "planned % complete". This must be calculated automatically by the start date, the duration and the date today. Example: The start date of a Task is January the first. The duration is 20 days (work and none-working), so the end date is the 20 of January. I would add a column, that shows the "planned % complete". So suppose it is the 10th of January today, the "planned % complete" must be 50% automatically calculated.     - Expected end date I have a task with startdate = 2007\11\05, Actual startDate is 2007\12\05. At the date 2008\01\15 I have reported remain. durance as 10h. When I level resources the end date is calculated from startdate + 10h ie. I see an enddate = 2007\11\06. I am interested in an expected enddate as of now.     - Calendar ?'s Hello, I am an entry level project manager and I know this is probably a silly question but I would appreciate any input...It seems like a nightmare to manage the calendars in this program, I'm quite confused and I'm having a difficult time keeping my dates where they need to be. I have spent little time with the program, however I have taken a class about two years ago and unfortunatly I have forgotten most of what I learned. Will someone please explain (as simply as possible) to me the way the calendars work? If I set up a 24hr calendar for the project and want to show an 8 hour task as a day what do I do? I had many other questions but can't really recal the the exact issue I was having so I can't give anymore examples.     - Leveling Changes work hours from 2 hrs to 14,944 I have a project that was created in 2007 Project Pro and saved locally. I imported the project onto the Enterprise server. Now I want to do some updates. I retrieved the project from the enterprise server and have all of my work hours. All tasks have the same resource on all of them. There are many tasks that start on the same day. When I level the resources I have one task that was 2 hrs of work is now 14,944 hours and one other that was 8 hrs is now 73,119 hrs.     - Missing Lookup values in custom fields in msp2007 I have custom fields defined in my Global.mpt. When a new file is created these fields are automatically copied to the new mpp. Some of the fields have lookup values. In msp2003 the lookup values would be copied along with the other custom field properties. In msp2007 the lookup values are missing. The resources are full-time support people, yet we are breaking down their support hours by the different organizations that call in with questions.     - How can I get a text field to stop autocorrecting 2 CApitals? Subject pretty much says it all. Our WBS Number (Text4) contains two capitals, such as 5.1.1.1.GAwl. Once you hit enter, M$ reverts it to Gawl. MPM (Microframe Project Manager) is picky enough that GAwl does not equal Gawl. Microsoft absolutely loves to think for you and I can't shut it off.     - Release project and resources on completed project Hi! I have 4 different projects set up to use the same resourcepool. When a project is complete - is it possible for me to remove the link between the project and the resourcepool? Or to give another example - I have a project that is set up wrong --> I start all over again with a new file and with the link to the same resourcepool. Even thorugh I deselect "use this resourcepool" --> resourcepool on the "old" project and saves everything, the old project still seems to be linked in. This leads to resources beeing overbooked as they are already beeing used in the old project.     - Resource skill sets Using Project 2007. We have a spreadsheet where each team member capabilities are recorded, one column per team member. There are 46 rows - each representing a specific skill set used in project implementation contains a score of between 1 & 5. Our Project Assistant would like to bring this information into our Resource Sheet so that it becomes easier for her to assign resources based on project and task requirements.     - Resources with different % Units Hi everybody. I am using Project 2007 (Standard). I have a fixed work, 40 hours task. I have 2 resources assigned at 100% units, both with a standard calendar (40 hrs/week). The duration is 5 days as a conseguence. Let's say that resource A is now available at only 50%. Project assigns 4 hours to resource A on each of the 5 days, while resource B is assigned 8,8,4 hours in the first trhee days of the week. It seems like that when changing %Units assignments, Project tries to keep the duration unchanged. Is there a way to tell Project to try to minimize duration when changing resource %Units assignments?     - AutoLink Question I am trying to understand the AutoLink option more fully. I see that if I have tasks linked with default FS dependencies, and add a new task between existing tasks, it will automatically break the existing link, and create a new chain. However, if I have changed the dependency type to, say SS, before inserting a new task, it respects the link and doesn't automatically link the new task. Why would that be? Are dependencies that are not automatic respected, even though AutoLink is active? Also, if I move a linked task, it sometimes breaks the link and sometimes doesn't. What is the rule for this?     - indicator column not showing screen tip when point to it. I am in a classroom and one of the computers shows the screen tip(as it should when you point to the indicator-note, contraint) in that column. A number of the other computers show the indicator but the screen tip doesn't show up when pointed to.     - Assigning a calendar to one task The base calendar for my project uses an 8 hour workday. I have one task (a lab test) which will run 24 hours a day. For that task only, I went to Task Information/Advanced and assigned a 24 hour calendar. I entered a duration of 48 hours for the task. If I understand correctly, Project should show the task taking 2 work days (24 hours per workday x 2 days = 48 hours). However, Project shows it taking 6 work days, which implies that it's still using an 8 hour workday for that task (8 hours a day x 6 days = 48 hours). How do I get that task to use a 24 hour workday?     - Max units vs. tasks with specific resource availability Hi! I have described my problem here http://www.positivistene.org/2008/01/14/MSProjectAndResources.aspx (sorry for the introduction on the case). My main concern is that the developer's "non-productive-work" i ignored in the project, and therefor the project when initiated i already wrong. Programmers do not work 100% 37,5 hours a week, the work closer to 75%. But does this mean that an initial 10 hour assignment is going to b completed in 12.5 hours, or will it take almost two full days calenda time rather than a bit more than one. I did a small test in project. In the resource view I created developers working 65%, 50% and 100%. I then created an "implementatio phase" and a "test phase" - I gave the developers 20 tasks to carry ou - amount of work everything from 2h to 35h. The result? Project uses my % input, but not for calculation in an way. In theory (I believe) my 50% working developer _should_ spend 1. weeks calendar time on set of tasks making out 37.5 hours (1 wor week). But project ignores this fully and says that this well start o monday and be complete following friday.     - Resources on Many Projects I'm a long time but basic MSP project user and I havn't really used resources before. My task is: 'Find a way to plan and apportion resources over projects' - ie apportion members of my team to projects on a time basis. I do not for the moment want to go to the lenghth of assigning resources to individual tasks. Before putting in a lot of effort I want to find examples of best practice and see if MSP really is the best tool. Do any of you use MSP in this way and have you any general advice to pass on. One issue that springs to mind is how this plan would interlink with individual project plans. I suppose it would be possible to time them all together in some giant programme - do any of you do this? My immedeate task, to reitterate, is just to plan my people's time (there's about two dozen). If I involve individual project plans these all involve other staff from other departments and I don't want to get involved with planning everything for my 17,000 strong company. In Project2007 I would start with the Earned Value Over Time Report.
Your alternative would be using Analyze Time Scaled Data in Excel from the
Analysis toolbar (available in P2003). %Complete may need to be calculated
with a formula in Excel.

In P2007, you can develop a custom report (Reports/Visual Reports/New...)
using the Task Summary Data and then pick %Complete from the Field Picker. A
privot table can time scale the data as well.
