    - Resource across projects I'm getting there - thanks to this forum! I now have a shared resource across 3 projects (one of which is absence, i.e. sickness & holidays!) If I open my resource file (in resource usage view), I can see by person, all the work that they have done across the projects in a week (to make sure it adds up to 35 hours) then by project I can see the progression - LOVELY But, of course, a problem remains (!), since I receive worksheets (across the projects) by man, I would like to be able to enter the hours worked from the resource usage view in the shared resource file, and then have that update the hours worked in all the projects (and consequently hours remaining etc etc) - I don't seem to be able to do this (it doesn't have any effect, and will not save), I have to go into each project & update them individually (which then updates the shared resource file) I'm sure there must be a way of doing this, all help appreciated Thanks -- Helen Tag: Changing SQL password Tag: 89137

    - Non-working time in the Resource Graph I am having 2 issues with seeing non-working time in the Resource Graph view: 1. Why can I not set non-working time to display in this view, even just the default calendar non-working time? 2. Is there any way I can display non-working time for the resource I have selected?     - Revised Target (Finish) Dates What is the best way to see revised target dates for tasks in MSP. Example: Task 1 had a target date of 8/26 (fixed units, effort driven), but the resource assigned was out sick for a week. The planned finish date in MSP does not change from 8/26 even though no time was booked to it, but reality is the task was not done on time.     - work days of a project Hi, I need to know if there is any way to have Microsoft Project show the working day that a task is starting? i.e. I know that project is 157 working days long and I have the calendar days and durations for each task (over 100 tasks) what I need to know is what day into the project does teh task start.     - Possible to automate iterative project tasks? I'm working on the Project templates for a set of processes which *may* have some iterative components. For example, I submit an application to an agency. That agency may request additional information, which adds an additional 30 days to my schedule. If they accept the application and pass it on to the final regulating authority, THEY may request additional information - adding another 30 days to my schedule. Is there a way to account for an optional, iterative task, without adding several individual RAI tasks along each step of the process? If an RAI is issued, it is mandatory and will become a dependency for other tasks; if it is not, other tasks will continue on schedule. Ideas on simplification welcome!     - Track overallocations across projects Hi, I am helping a project team to put their plans in 4 or 5 MSP files, and consolidate them into one master document and all resources in one pool. One question that has risen is what the best practice is when it comes to track conflicts (resource or calendar) across the consolidated files once the project has strarted. Is there any way to let Project warn for conflicts in project A as a result of a change in project B?     - Resources / Sum Hi all together, In MS Project I have a Resource where each you use it (type material) $ 100.00 are billed. Now there are 13 pieces used in May. In the column "Work" there stands correctly "13" and also the $100.00 appears in the right column. BUT at the TimeScaleData the sum in May is only the value of one piece ($100.00) and not the required 13*$100 = $1,300.00 ...     - Open project files in read-only by default? Currently when I open a project file from the project server it defaults to read/write view. We're responsible people so this isn't a huge issue but, for peace of mind, I feel it would be very helpful if I can change the default to "Read-Only" when opening files.     - Problem using resource sharing in a project portfolio We are using MS Project Standard 2002 for project portfolio mgmt in our organisation. USAGE: We have a common .MPP file that includes a list of all human resources. Each project manager has his own .MPP file for his own project. Each of the project specific files is linker to the common resource list by the standard function of MS Project (). The project managers are not to write anything to the common file. We also have a portfolio file, which collects all the project files together and we would like to use it among other things to show summary resource load graphs. All the files are located on a network drive. PROBLEM: MS Project mysteriously "shuffles" the resources, so that if a project manager has chosen e.g. Smith for a certain task, next time he opens his file, the resource is now Mr Taylor. It has somehow shifted down a couple of rows in the resource list. Many project managers have experienced this. Still, we have not been able to isolate the problem by deliberate testing. Notice that if the name of the human resource is closer to the beginning of alphabets the shift is fewer rows than if it is towards the end of the alphabets. Does anyone know what causes this problem? Are there work-arounds? Is the problem due to our version os MS Project or the lack of Project Server?     - Consolidated Resources I created a shared resources file. Once linked, I expected the drop-down file in each of my linked projects to link to the shared resources. Instead, the drop-down in my file shows only those that I originally entered directly into a file. Did I do something wrong? Is this the way it is supposed to work? If so, how does this help?     - Model for Litigation Matters I work for an accounting/economic analysis firm that specializes in litigation consulting. We are hired by lawyers to help quantify damages in civil law suits. Our directors (senior officers) will testify in a court of law in support of our damage calculations, and also rebut the calculations offered from the opposing side. I have been asked by many seniors in my firm if I could recommend software that would help manage the document flow, project hours, progress to date, assignment of tasks, etc. for a given matter. A typical matter involves two entities involved in a legal dispute, with my company being retained by either one (plaintiff or defendant). Also involved are a tremendous amount of analyses - summarizing depositions, research analyses of relevant markets and industries, analyses of financial documents, etc. A matter will usually have a managing director, a senior manager, along with junior analysts. The above tasks are usually assigned to analysts. The problems encountered are typical for any project: Which analyst is doing what task? When did they start? What is their progress? What documents have been reviewed? By whom? What summaries/reports/conclusions have been generated? As you can imagine, staff may be assigned to more than one matter. Also, work on a particular matter may suddenly cease and remain dormant for an extended period of time, and then resume again. It would be helpful for everyone involved to be able to pick up where they left off, know at glance what analyses have been completed, and very important - be able to retrieve all of the results/conclusions or vital data up to that point. The answer may simply be to develop an Access database. I understand that Project is quite complex and is capable of very sophisticated project management and scheduling. But I was wondering if Project would be useful for litigation type matters such as this. Any thoughts or suggestions for other software that you may be aware of would be greatly appreciated, too.     - Constraining Specific Tasks Exclusive of Other Work Hello All, I am new to MS Project trying to schedule a shutdown. Three tasks (each a different duration) require all other work to stop while they are being performed due to safety concerns. These three tasks are the primary reason for the shutdown. Two of the tasks are on the critical path. They also occur in the middle of the overall project. Only two of the tasks can be performed at the same time. Other tasks would stop when these three tasks start and would resume after all three are completed. Currently this is a simple MS Project project without resource allocation.     - Why is Project so RUBBISH I'm really ticked off. I thought software way meant to make life easier not a damn site harder. Simple thing: set up a master task that is the duration of the project. Split the project into sub tasks. Half the time I can't even change the duration date of a task.     - Viewing Overallocations While working in the Gantt Chart on the Table Entry view (or any view for that matter) I would like to be able to immediately see that a resource has become over allocated when assigned to a particular task. For example, if a resource is already allocated at 100% and I assign that resource to a task, is there any way that a dialog box can appear that says, "This resoruce is already allocated on this date and this task, are you sure you want to over-allocate the resource?" Alternatively, it would be great if there was a graphic indicator that immediately appeared, like on the Resource Sheet view. I know that I can very easily switch to the Resource Sheet, Resource Usage or Resource Graph views to see that the resource is over-allocated, but I am really hoping to find a solution that does not require switching views. The resource responds with updates to hours worked, but when I click update project', I keep getting the following message: An import error occurred. Check row XX column -1.     - Sub Web Access We are using MS Project Server 2002 with SharePoint for sub webs. When running Status Reports we get the Microsoft Logon dialog box. If you enter a valid username and password nothing happens. If you select Cancel, Issues and Documents do not get pulled from the sub-web. We have deleted some users from the Browser Group in the sub-webs as they were locked out due to the 1024 user limit. If I re-synch the sub-web, sometimes it corrects the problem but not always. Firstly, please excuse me if I use some wrong terminology, I'm on a French version of 2003 so the words are different & I'm having to guess at what they would be on the Eng version! My staff will use it plan & track what they are doing in the next period (say two weeks).     - New User/Is Project right for my project Hi there - I am new to MS Project and trying to figure out if I can make it work for my project before I invest too much time into learning the product. I am working on a 2 year project that has various tasks with various deadlines, and one ultimate deadline. I want to keep track of the tasks and be able to generate a timeline/chart to show the plan and progress. However my tasks are not something that I will be applying a certain number of resources to and my duration will be fixed. I will be assigning tasks to people, but the tasks are more of task leaders for that particular task and you can't assign an effort amount to it. Basically this is more of a process that we are going through and the various phases that will get us through the process to our ultimate end result. The people working on this project all have other duties and this is just one thing they are working on along with the rest of their job. I hope that makes sense and any advice anybody can give on if I should give MS Project a chance or go with a different application. I am having trouble when I attempt to change the SQL Password that
Sharepoint is using to access the SQL 2000 database. I have changed the
account password that Sharepoint is using. Then then go into the Sharepoint
Configuration and change the password on the two different locations to the
new password. After doing this, I reset IIS. When I attempt to open the
sharepoint site, I get an error stating that it cannot connect to the SQL
Database. I change everything back to the original password, and
everything works fine. What am I missing here?
