    - Automating Project Professional server side I have a web service which updates the project database to extend a task, and then I need to run the project scheduling engine in order to update the schedules accordingly. I have all this code written, and it works just fine as long as I run it from the computer I'm sitting at. However, as soon as I call the same code from a web service, it doesn't work anymore. It appears that I cannot automate project professional from a web service. Does anyone have some resources that will explain to me how I can get around this.     - Actual Work Changes? I have a task in MS Project Server that is fixed duration and is effort driven. I've been manipulating data to set my project just right, but I've noticed the following.     - Task Usage - tracking actual Can someone explain why on the Task Usage screen, if I have 'work' hours for a specific day, and the resource did not perform that work for that day, if I put zero hour for the actual sometimes the work shifts to the next working day, and sometimes MS Project will not take the zero actual hours and not shift the work to the next day.     - Resource leveling/scheduling - odd behavior Thanks for all the help earlier on effort vs duration. Now I have a question on levelling. I have read the Levelling FAQs that I saw referenced in other posts, but I am curious about this behavior of Project. After attempting to Level Resources, Project complains that it cannot level for a set of dates, June 27-July 3. When I looked at what Project had scheduled for that day, we had one sub-task of a project and a completely unrelated task, scheduled for the same dates. There was no relationship between the tasks, other than that both must be completed to meet our "Complete & Tested" Milestone. Oddly enough, I also noted that from May 22-Jun 9, Project scheduled NO work at all for my resource. So I was wondering, why didnt project move the unrelated task (that has no predecessors or constraints) for May 22- Jun 9? I manually fixed this by making the task start on May 22.     - Materials, % Complete and EVM Hi - I am having trouble with accurate reporting when adding hardware materials to my plan. I am running a $266K project that is where duration % complete is 34% and work % complete is 37% and I've actually only spent $77K. Sounds pretty good right. $100K of the $266K is for 4 servers and the software that is required. I have added this $100K material resource to the resource pool and assigned it to the "Order Hardware" activity in my project schedule. When the "Order Hardware" activity is 0% complete, my CPI is around 1.2 and my SPI is around 1.09. Sounds great right. Well we just ordered the server last friday so I want to update it to 100% complete. Only thing is then my project actual cost has just increased by $100K and now my CPI is .5. I am very particular in the way that I report project performance. I use the Earned Value Management (EVM) methodology....reporting BAC, AC, Planned % Complete, Actual $ Complete, PV, EV, SV and CV. I want to show that I have purchased this $100K item but I don't want it to show that I have grossly overbudget either. Any ideas?     - Auto color change on task bars. I am importing scheduling data from MS Access to Project. The data I am transfering includes information on the "working status" of a given task. (i.e. lead, working, completed, etc.) I would like each of these to be represented by a different task bar color. More importantly, I would like Project to recognize the "working status" and automatically change the task bar color when I merge the data.     - Task Start Date My Project begins 2 months ago. I have tasks that could have started prior to todays date and have slack time. Because the task constraints default to ASAP, they currently show the start dates that in theory could have been the actual start dates that are earlier than today's date. But, since they were not started they cannot start prior to todays date. I understand the situation, but people who are looking at the gantt schedule do not. I do not want to set the task constraint to ALAP, because this would obscure the available slack time. Is there any way to get tasks that have not started to show a "possible" start date equal to the current date? I know I could set the task constraints to "Start No Sooner Than...", but that would require changing every task every day I (or someone elase) looks at the project.     - Task - Resource Allocation for Multiple Users with Differnt Work Hours I have a task that takes 40 hours to complete. I asssign 3 people to it. Two work full time and 1 works part time(3 hours per day during the week and 8 on the weekends). If I set the resource allocation for 100% for all users project takes the 40 hours and gives each person 13.33 hours of work to do causing the task to take longer then needed as the part time user takes more days to complete his 13.33 hours. I would like to be able to 1. Have it allocate the resources based on getting the task done in the least amount of calandar days rather then giving each person the same amount of work. The guy that works 8 hours per day should just keep working on the task until it is done. Is this possible? I tried resource leveling which I thought might help but it didnt seem to have any luck. The speciality employee also charges more per hour if that can help microsoft project to figure out resource allocation. I posted a similar inquiry a while back and got a response from one person who thought this was not possible. I think he might be right but I don't understand why project can't handle that allocation. I can manually edit the working hours the week of that task (once I know when the task is starting) but I cant seem to do much else.     - Shared Resources I took the resources from a project and save them as a Resources project. I then went and deleted the resources from the original project and said I wanted to share resources. The thing is, evidently when I deleted the resources I deleted the assignment of those resources to the tasks, so the shared resources sit there unassigned.     - Not Quite Leveled I'm using Proj 03. I've got a project with roughly 1500 tasks. They are broken into two major sets, and those sets are broken into two sets. So it looks like Summ1 Summ11 T111 . . . Summ12 Summ2 Summ21 Summ22 Summ23 All the Tijk share a single resource. They're all ASAP Fixed Work. Summ1 and Summ2 are independent. Summ11 and Summ12 are linked SS+24h. Summ2i are linked SS. The fixed work ranges from a min to a couple hours. T1ij are of equal priority and higher priority than T2ij. So here's my problem. When I level resources to the min the resource is slightly overbooked (108%) for the first two days; the 3rd day is around 50%.     - task resource allocation discrepancy: 0hrs<>80% I'm using Project Standard 2003. I have a 300 task project file. On many tasks, I have allocated myself (David Wanless) as resource at a rate of 80%. However, many of these now have a work value of 0hrs. How can a task of duration 5 days have a resource allocated at 80% for 0hrs? Note that other resources are allocated to the same task. Some of their work values are also wrong, although not 0. If I create a new task with all the same resources allocated, it calculates my Work value as 30h, matching the 80% of my time. This works fine and is an excellent tool for workload forecasting. However, When you open the resource pool MSP 2000 creates a Master Project.     - Corruption when debloating Hi, I recently debloated our project file by following the steps to convert it to MSP Database and then back to a plan. It worked in reducing the size but I've just noticed that some of the assignment costs have been modified. Further investigation shows that when looking at one of the changed assignments in the task usage view, if I total up the monthly cost columns on the yellow right hand pane, it doesn't equal the assignment.cost value on the left. I've only just noticed this because the task cost had remained unchanged (so task cost and the timebased data cost were correct, but the assignment cost in the split field was different). Upon dumping all variances out to Excel, I can see that some have moved up by a small fraction and others down, but the overall variance on the assignments totalled up to 5K, which isn't really a justifiable rounding error.     - How do you schedule in a roster environment I am scheduling a project at a fly-in fly-out 365 day a year operation that runs an 8 days on / 6 days off roster. Crews fly in for 8 days of work, then fly out for 6 days off. Some crews work Tuesday to Tuesday, some Wednesday to Wednesday, and some Thursday to Thursday. Each crew has an opposite crew that works the other side of the 8-6 roster, so on roster handover days (i.e. the Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, depending on the crew) everyone is here, and the entire operation is handed over to the incoming crew. As you can see, there are 6 crews, and as a result, I think there will be 6 different resource calendars for this project (2 for each of the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday crews) My questions are: 1 - is there a quicker way to set up an 8/6 roster in Project? Right now I am using the Wizard to manually set working and non-working days for the duration of the project. This is tedious and prone to error. If the project extends beyond the plan, someone will need to cotton on to the fact that the calendar needs to be updated as well or the whole thing could fall in a heap. 2 - what happens when a team member changes crews / rosters? Occaisionally a team member, usually a senior manager, will go to work on the opposite roster. I am concerned that if I change their resource schedule it will back-date itself and mess up all the start / finish dates that have already gone past.     - OK, I'm new to Project but... Just installed Project server and Project Prof. on a few clients. Trying to get it to work so my people can play with it before we go live. No problem connecting to the server but I can't figure out how to save an "Enterprise" project. I'm assuming to be an "Enterprise" project it must be saved to the server first. When I click on save, I don't get any choice to save it to the server. I'm assuming a "Non Enterprise" Project is a project that is saved other than the server and just published to the server. Hi; When saving an Excel document as XML, I am able to load and view that documnet into Excel just by a doubleclick on the saved XML document. If I try to doubleclick on a XML document saved from MS Project 2003, the XML file is shown in Internet Explorer - not opened as a project in MS Project 2003. How do I change the symbol on milestones, from the default black diamond, to
something else, on ALL milestone tasks on ALL projects?

I assume I do something in the Enterprise Global, but I don't know where.

Here is what you do:

Format menu,
Barstyles
choose the milestone line and change it to what you want.

For the enterprise, I'm not 100% sure as I don't use it, but I think you
need to check out the enterprise global before you do this and make sure you
are in the default view (Gantt view or something like that).
