    - Display of Overtime Work I have resources that work on several different projects. I assigned the resource to a 40 work week.     - AutoLink Question I am trying to understand the AutoLink option more fully. I see that if I have tasks linked with default FS dependencies, and add a new task between existing tasks, it will automatically break the existing link, and create a new chain. However, if I have changed the dependency type to, say SS, before inserting a new task, it respects the link and doesn't automatically link the new task. Why would that be? Are dependencies that are not automatic respected, even though AutoLink is active? Also, if I move a linked task, it sometimes breaks the link and sometimes doesn't. What is the rule for this?     - indicator column not showing screen tip when point to it. I am in a classroom and one of the computers shows the screen tip(as it should when you point to the indicator-note, contraint) in that column. A number of the other computers show the indicator but the screen tip doesn't show up when pointed to.     - Assigning a calendar to one task The base calendar for my project uses an 8 hour workday. I have one task (a lab test) which will run 24 hours a day. For that task only, I went to Task Information/Advanced and assigned a 24 hour calendar. I entered a duration of 48 hours for the task. If I understand correctly, Project should show the task taking 2 work days (24 hours per workday x 2 days = 48 hours). However, Project shows it taking 6 work days, which implies that it's still using an 8 hour workday for that task (8 hours a day x 6 days = 48 hours). How do I get that task to use a 24 hour workday?     - Max units vs. tasks with specific resource availability Hi! I have described my problem here http://www.positivistene.org/2008/01/14/MSProjectAndResources.aspx (sorry for the introduction on the case). My main concern is that the developer's "non-productive-work" i ignored in the project, and therefor the project when initiated i already wrong. Programmers do not work 100% 37,5 hours a week, the work closer to 75%. But does this mean that an initial 10 hour assignment is going to b completed in 12.5 hours, or will it take almost two full days calenda time rather than a bit more than one. I did a small test in project. In the resource view I created developers working 65%, 50% and 100%. I then created an "implementatio phase" and a "test phase" - I gave the developers 20 tasks to carry ou - amount of work everything from 2h to 35h. The result? Project uses my % input, but not for calculation in an way. In theory (I believe) my 50% working developer _should_ spend 1. weeks calendar time on set of tasks making out 37.5 hours (1 wor week). But project ignores this fully and says that this well start o monday and be complete following friday.     - Resources on Many Projects I'm a long time but basic MSP project user and I havn't really used resources before. My task is: 'Find a way to plan and apportion resources over projects' - ie apportion members of my team to projects on a time basis. I do not for the moment want to go to the lenghth of assigning resources to individual tasks. Before putting in a lot of effort I want to find examples of best practice and see if MSP really is the best tool. Do any of you use MSP in this way and have you any general advice to pass on. One issue that springs to mind is how this plan would interlink with individual project plans. I suppose it would be possible to time them all together in some giant programme - do any of you do this? My immedeate task, to reitterate, is just to plan my people's time (there's about two dozen). If I involve individual project plans these all involve other staff from other departments and I don't want to get involved with planning everything for my 17,000 strong company.     - Finish time Help. I have a project were a task is set finish to start. Its predecessor finishes at 22/01/08 13:00. The task is set for 12 hours and rightly sets the start time as 22/01/08 13:00. The finish time then changes to 23/01/08 13:00. I want this to be 23/01/08 01:00.     - finish grouped tasks first Hi, I'm new to Microsoft Project and have been working my way through all the tutorials but haven't come across an answer to this yet. I entered tasks, durations, resources, and then linked tasks and set dependencies. Then, I realized it was difficult to discuss the schedule with others (with 40 tasks), so I started grouping tasks into phases with summary task names. Now, what I'd like is for Project to re-order the work so that tasks in a phase finish in order, making the duration of each phase as short as possible. If there's a good reason for doing something from Phase 2 right away, that's fine, but if there's no reason to do a task from Phase 2, I'd like to work my way through all the tasks in Phase 1 before moving on.     - Problem with format of exported hours being in quotation marks I am exporting a tab-delimited text file. (using Save As) In the output file created by MS Project, the Work field (in hours) is sometimes in quotation marks. It seems that when the number of hours in the Work field exceeds 999, it gets quoted as in "1,000 hrs" while 208.10 hrs is not in quotes. I think it's because of the comma. All values with a comma separating the thousands digit are in quotes. For that matter, even the Name field is in quotes when the Name field contains a comma. the quotes around the Name field is not a problem for me but I can't have the Work field in quotes. Is there any way to tell MS Project not to put exported numbers in quotes? In the Map that I use to do the export, the field formats all default to - Text. About the most that they do is put percent complete. I am wondering what the quickest way is to record actuals. I know you can set status date and all that.     - Soap Toolkit version 3.0 error realted to InfoPath 2003 Hi All, I have created an InfoPath(version 2003) form with manged code. It is published to a form library in SharePoint site. The form is retrieving data from a webservice. When one of the the user tries to access the Infopath form he gets the following error "Before InfoPath can use a Web service, you must install Office SOAP Toolkit version 3.0." The user then installed SOAP Toolkit version 3.0. But after installation he is again getting the same error. I then requested him to access the url of the webservice directly and he was able to access the url of the webservice and could see all the methods. I requested all users to install ".Net Framework" and run ".Net Progrmmability Support for InfoPath" to access the form. I noticed in Microsoft Office installation in the "Shared features" there is "SOAP Toolkit" which says it supports access of webservice by Office applications. I am not sure if this could be the reason on the users computer. I am yet to test this one since I do not have access to the users computer currently. Apart from this can anyone think of what could be the reason. I would really appreciate if someone can provide me any hints, since its been 3 days I am struggling with issue and failed to find a solution yet. Also the user is not a developer.     - Linking subprojects to a Master Project Our team is operating MS Project 2003. We maintain separate project files for each of our active projects in a shared network directory.     - Slow responce from Project Web Access? Hi All, I have three production MSP 2007 instances and three dev/test instances. All six instances are quite slow to responde to an initial request for project web access. If I click on a favorite link to PWA or enter the address manually, once I hit enter it taks up to 20 seconds for the main PWA page to load. After it loads once it will load in 1-2 seconds everytime there after but the inital load after being away from the page for 10+ minites goes at a snales page.     - Tasks.UniqueID vs. Tasks.ID for reporting? Hi - I would appreciate your feedback about the whether the Tasks.ID or the Tasks.UniqueID field is better for reports. It seems that Tasks.ID can change on the fly (such as when a task is inserted), so it doesn't seem to be a good field to show if consistency is needed over time. The Tasks.UniqueID field seems to remain constant, so it would therefore be better for consistent reporting.     - ACWP does not always equal Actual Costs I am entering Actual Cost manually, and have a status date set in project information. One in Excel, which is a requirement that our salespeople fill out) and one that is in Project, which we want our salesteam to begin using.     - Linking Multiple Tasks to Milestone I normally link sub-tasks within a summary to each other, and use a milestone as the first and last tasks, so that I can link the last milestone within a summary to the first milestone in the next phase (groups of tasks within a summary). I think this is correct and seems to work well. However, in looking at various Project templates, including those furnished by Microsoft, I have noticed that often the way they work is with an ending milestone within each phase (no beginning milestone), linking each and every task within a phase to the ending milestone within it (even though tasks within the phase are linked). The ending milestone then simply links to the first task in the next phase. Is there any reason to have so many links to the ending milestone? Shouldn't the tasks be linked together and the last task in a phase be lnked to the ending milestone? Is it necessary/recommended that each phase have a beginning milestone?     - Earned value over time report Hi, I try to produce an earned value report over time in MP 2007. My tasks have fixed cost (this work is done for me by contractors). I saved a baseline and the earned value details updates regulary in the earned value table. It makes sense right up until you want to insert a task when you're grouping,
then it doesn't make sense anymore. :)
