In the middle of a slide animation, can I present a graphic and pause the
animations such that the viewer must click the object to resume the
animation?

If you right click the mouse during a slideshow - powerpoint will pause
whatever it is doing.

Click again on any blank area of the slide to continue from where it was
PAUSED from.

cheers

This is cool, but I was hoping I could add an object and stop the animation
automatically when that object appeared?

Wishful thinking?

No need, just design your animations on the slide as you want them. Set the
first ones to animate "After Previous" and then the next one set to "On
Click". Any following that you can also set to "After previous". If your
slisde has 10 animations and you want the first five to advance
automatically and then stop and be forced to click to restart the animations
the above will do it nicely. You may even want to have object with text
like "proceed or next" and use it as a trigger.
