I have two presentations with midi files inserted into slides. They worked
fine a week ago, but now no loger play. Everything else works fine, wav
files, wmv, mpg, etc. I tried removing and re-inserting to no avail. I
don't have QuickTime installed. I installed some Windows updates this
morning, then tried a Restore to attempt to fix the issue, also to no avail -
System restored successfulyy, but midis still won't play.

Any suggestions? I have a presentation in 2.5 hours that now won't work 100%.

Thanks,
Dan

Hi Dan,

I tried inserting .mid files for sound in versions from 2000 and could play
back the file. I don't find why your file should stop working just like that.
Please check if the file works in any player in your system.

PP 2002 with all updates. The midi plays fine in WMP. I Do remember seeing
a popup after one of my Windows updates that stated some MIME files were not
associated with Quicktime, and did I want to re-associate them. I clicked
yes, then realized a while later that midis stopped working in PP. Odd thing
is, I don't even have Quicktime installed on that machine. I went into file
associations and made sure that midi files and midi streams were defaulted to
use WMP to play.

Went ahead without the midis at the presentation yesterday, but I'm
determined to figure it out anyway. I DID have a similar problem in PP2000
years ago where file associations got screwed up and wouldn't play mpgs. I
remember having to go into the win.ini files and make changes to fix it, but
that was so long ago and before XP. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Thanks again,
Dan

You can change file association using this.

You might also want to try a short folder path. Create a folder with a short
path eg C:\ppts and save the presenation to it. Put the midi in the same
folder and re insert it.

Did that, unless I should associate mid files with something other than WMP.
Are you suggesting that I change it to PP?

Okay, solved it, but I feel really stupid. When the midis wouldn't play, I
went into the advanced volume controls and verified that all volume controls
were not set to off. Should have eliminated that as a possibility, no? It
turns out that there is something in my system that keeps setting the midi
only volume to zero, all on it's own. Fix? Move the volume slider back up
for midis prior to showing my PowerPoint.

Thanks for all of the previous suggestions.
