we have chosen a design template.

There is a stripe across the slide as part of the design template.

My boss would like a different color stripe on various slides.

when i change colors of the graphic they change for all the slides, and i do
not get a choice to change for this slide only.

how can i dot that?

Sounds like you are doing this on the master slide.

Try going to the slide master view and INSERT > Duplicate slide master as
many times as you need. Change the color so you have masters with each color
needed.

In normal view you should see all of the masters and be able to apply to
selected slides.

These instructions are for 2002/3 it's slightly different in 2007. Before
2002 you cannot have multiple masters

You have created new master slides. Now you have to associate slides
with the masters.

What David said. Go to the Home tab and click the Layout button. Change to
the appropriate slide master and layout.
