SharePoint is very weak on workflow. The doc library has single route
approval flow and it has an event handler to enable the extension of coding
your work flow. However it is far away from customers' requirments.
So you may have to consider other thrid party's work flow products such as
k2. Bob Mixon has a series of blogs which detailed covers the comparison of
work flow solutions on the market.
