I'm designing a large WSS server farm and require SSL. We have old Netscape
clients that only support basic authentication. Is there a supported
solution to using SSL with load balanced WSS front end servers not using ISA
Server 2004? I hope Microsoft didn't back its customers into a corner to be
forced to use ISA.

Should be no problem. You would only start thinking about ISA if you needed
to reverse proxy access when exposing sharepoint externally.
