    - Specify Configuration Database error I'm trying to get Sharepoint Server set up. I'm at the Specify Configuration Database Settings page, but I can't get past it. If I choose "Create" (which is what I should be selecting according to the install instructions) I get an "Unexpected Error" error message. I was getting a longer message, but now I'm just getting this "Unexpected" one. Any ideas as to what may be wrong? I selected the "Install without Database Engine" option because this server has SQL Server installed. It also is the only server. There are no other servers connected to it.     - MultiPage Meeting Site Layout Hi, I posted this in the WSS newsgroup but didn't get an answer so I thought I would try here. We will be having multiple Mutipage Meeting subsites. Right now, when a user adds a new page the page comes in blank and they are required to add the webparts. I would like to modify the default layout of a new blank meeting tab so that default webparts are already included then they add it. In addition, I would like to change the layout from 3 columns to something else. The first request is a must-have, the second is a nice to have.     - Restore Database schema too old I am getting the following error when I tried to restore the back of the SPS sites that I had created."the database schema is too old to perform this operation in this sharepoint cluster. Please upgrade the database and try again". I have tried for two days to get this too work, without any success.     - Elevate to Production Am I correct that the best way to elevate the portal from test to production is actually backing up the portal and then restoring it on the production box? or is there a better way. Most of the changes will be to 'sub-areas' and what if we have mulitple 'jobs' in test and only want to elevate one of them? Do we need to only have one at a time in Test. Also moving from Dev to test.... I would do the same backup/ restore? Basically it comes down to is I am looking for a procedural guideline on how to manage a complete DEV/TEST/PROD environment and have production secure and only have design changes allowed by admins... not developers.     - Explorer View We are having problems with our Explorer View. It works on some of the computers and on others I get a can't display page error message or Internet Explorer freezes. On the computer that is doesn't work on I have checked and the 'WebClient' service is running so I know that its not that. Does any one have any other ideas or settings that need to be changed???     - Crawl of Sharepoint 2003 portal with SSL fails Hi, We've setup a Sharepoint 2003 portal, which works quite fine. To do so we used three new servers : One SQL server One job server (index & job) One web server (web & search) The search works fine in almost every case! For one of our customers we need to setup SSL for security purpose together with basic authentication. In this case, the search doesn't work well! We get the following error message : The address could not be found, (0x80041205 - Access is denied. Check that the Default Content Access Account in SharePoint Central Administration is correct, or follow the "Exclude and Include Content" link to add a rule to specify the proper crawling account to access this URL. ) If we don't require SSL and change include & exclude content, everything works fine!     - personal site regional settings Hi, I am wondering where the regional settings for mysit/personal site get picked up from. We have set the regional settings for both the portal and the sharepoint services servers to uk, but when I create a mysite (also the personal site) for a user the date settings show up in US format. I get the symptoms as described in the KB article 827483 (cut and pasted here for clarity):- BEGIN QUOTE SYMPTOMS When you try to compile an audience, or specify an audience compilation schedule in your portal in Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003, you receive an error message that is similar to one of the following: An error occurred while setting the schedule. Please check below for details. -or- An error has occurred while accessing SQL database or system resources. If this is the first time you have seen this message, please try again later. If this problem persists, please contact your administrator. -or- The search service is unavailable or access was denied. Check that the search service is configured properly and running. Back to the top CAUSE This problem occurs if both of the following conditions exist: .The configuration database administration account information is changed. -and- .This changed account information is not updated to the portal. In this scenario, when you try to compile an audience, or create an audience schedule, you should receive the following error message instead of the error messages that are described in the "Symptoms" section of this article: Scheduler_LogonFailure_Error The user name or password is incorrect. Check the account information for the configuration database administrator account on the Configure Server Farm Account Settings page. Back to the top WORKAROUND To work around this problem, verify the credentials specified for the configuration database administration account. To do this, follow these steps: 1.Start SharePoint Central Administration. 2.Under Server Configuration, click Configure Server Farm Account Settings. 3.In the Configuration Database Administration Account area, click to select the Specify account check box. 4.Enter the user account in the Domain\username format, and then type the password in the Password and Confirm Password boxes. 5.Click OK, and then wait for the changes to be propagated to the portal. Back to the top STATUS Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. END QUOTE I tried to follow the steps outlined in the workaround, but still have the problem - can't compile an audience, and I get the same message (second variant shown in SYMPTOMS above). I note that Step 3 above refers to 'Configuration Database Administration' account, whereas the SPS page I am looking at only refers to :- 'Default Content Access Account' I have tried this using an Active Directory domain account and a local account, both of which are members of the SPS Server's local Administrators group (and should thus have full rights to change any settings for SPS, as I understand it). Can anyone shed any light on why I cannot see this setting to change it? Is it likely that something is corrupted? (I am a relative newbie to SPS, and the initial setup was done by a third party.     - Document Quotas Hello! Recently we have run into a problem with the number of documents our users are uploading into a single document library. According to the document "Capacity Planning for Windows SharePoint Services" (http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/wss/2/all/adminguide/en-us/stsb07.mspx) we should be creating sub-folders in this document library since there are well over 2000 documents in it (about 20,000) all contained in the base folder. Is there a mechanism for quotas on the number of documents in a library? I know we can create quotas based on overall size, but we are interested in quotas on numbers of documents...preferably per folder. I did not find any information on these types of quotas. The crux of the issue is that this interfering with the CommVault backups of our portal. According to CommVault, we need to fix this based on the information contained in the "Capacity Planning for Windows SharePoint Services" document.     - Help! Design tips for a Portal Knowledge Base At the company I work for, our small IT staff is running into the problem that our employees don't have a proper storage space for their documents. They complain that they have documents that are useful outside of their department and would like us to create a designated site/area for these files. This has been an ongoing problem for everyone and to solve it I would like to design a central knowledge base where we can upload, organize, and possibly discuss these docs. We're all n00bs with Sharepoint and are having issues coming up with a good design and structure for this KB. What we would like to have is a tree hierarchy (not unlike a discussion board) that's organized by topic or category. Where users can post articles, comments, start discussions, and upload/attach documents. In addition we'd like for our documents to belong to multiple categories/topics as they are applicable. For example: I have a document on HOW TO use Remote Desktop. That document could fall under the topic: Accessing a Remote Server, but also the topic: Assisting Desktop Users. If I search for "remote desktop" I want that document to show it is a "member" of those topics. Perhaps there's a way to use metadata? At this point, anything is helpful!! But when they try to access the Team Sites (WSS) which they are members to, they get asked for a login and password and after they have entered it three times it allows them to ask for an access request.     - mapped personal folder opens word docs in read only For some reason when I map my personal folder as a drive it opens up word documents as read only and only word documents. I Can use the Page Viewer Web Part, but I need the ability to make the web part appear/dissappear based on the user security.     - errror: Server does not contain Document Management components... Hello, I tried to assign a server name (in SharePoint Portal Server Central Administration > Configure Server Topology) for the "Document Library Server Component (Optional)" I got the error: "Server myserver could not be contacted or does not contain Document Management components. Please verify that the server can be contacted or install Document Management components on the server." The sharepoint is actually installed on the same server that I'm trying to contact. Sherepoint actually had no other problems during configuration or usage or portal on this server. Even I can create documents in the library from my PC. So why do I get the above error when configuring server topology? My understanding is that Document Library component is installed by default and no additional components are needed. On the setup there is two options to add "Server and client components for backward-compatible document libraries" or "client components".     - Very slow response on first hit Hi, I've got a standard setup of SPS on Win2003. When I hit a site for the first time after an hours or two (e.g. after lunch) the requested page takes 40-50 seconds to render. After that, the site reposnds in sub second times. I assume IIS or SPS is timeing out and recycling. Can I increase this time to 3 or 4 hours to allow users to have fast response times and mitigate the risk of performance related helpdesk calls?     - Problems with search Hi *, we were having huge trouble with the index and search components of our SPS 2003 server (small farm scenario). The index service is running correctly now and has already crawled the portal content. When using the search (from portal home) the search result page only shows: "Your search encountered an error. If the problem persists, contact the portal site administrator." So, I'd like to know what kind of error has been encountered. The event protocol doesn't show any hints to the error either. Does anyone know, how I can reactivate the search? I thought of putting the search and index service to antoher machin temporarily and try it with such a scenario.     - Sps QueryService return Gibberish I am using the sps query service to get description (summary) of documents indexed by sps. The result i receive is encoded - so hebrew content appears as gibberish. In the past the same code worked fine. I tried to add the sps query service to the research pane of word2003. The results here were also encoded so i understand that the problem is in the server and not in my code. On the other hand the results in the search page of the portal appear fine.     - Problems with document collaboration I'm having issues trying to get document collaboration to work within Sharepoint Portal Server. I've created a document workspace on my Sharepoint site and added several documents. When I make a change to the document and then someone else goes in to access the same document from the document workspace the changes are not being reflected dynamically in their browser. Tried the following: 1) Clicking the Get Updates button in the Document Workspace window 2) Per a recommendation in Technet, made sure I have the document update component in Office 2003 installed locally 3) Enabled the relevant selections by clicking the Options button in the Document Workspace window to choose to receive all updates when they occur,etc Is there a Sharepoint permission that relates to seeing these types of updates occur? Also wanted to know if there is a way to see who is actively editing a document in a Document Workspace. In this case I don't mean who the document is checked out to but who actively has the document open since you can edit a document without having it checked out. Sharepoint reflects who is online who has access to the Document Workspace where the document resides but I don't see an option to reflect who are the individuals attempting to make changes to a specific document. Hi, friends, I've recently been given the task of administering an MS Sharepoint Portal Server (2001), and my boss has already given me an interesting task Categories by default are listed alphabetically, rather than functionally. For example, as a K-12 educational institution, we have the following three main categories: *Elementary *Middle School *High School As a result of auto-alphabetizing, however, the categoreis look like this: *Elementary *High School *Middle School See my issue? The same is true of documents. "Kindergarten" comes after "Elementary," for example. The boss has asked that I avoid "cheesy" solutions (such as using creative filesnames/titles like "1Elementary," "2Middle School," "3High School").     - Cannot Create Document Hello, I have installed SharePoint Portal 2.0 on Windows 2003 without any errors. I have created the portal and followed all the installation and configuration steps without any problems. However, when I go to document library (i.e. "Documents and Lists" or from mysite library) and click on create new document I get the following error: Error: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The document could not be created. The required application may not be installed properly, or the template for this document library cannot be opened. Please try the following: 1. Check the General Settings for this document library for the name of the template, and install the application necessary for opening the template. If the application was set to install on the first use, run the application and then try creating a new document again. 2. If you have permission to modify this document library, go to General Settings for the library and configure a new template. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Additional info: - I'm a domain/portal administrator and I have all the rights. - I tried to follow the SPP Administration manual but the "Configure document libraries" under "Component Configuration" section does not exist. - I don't need back-compatible document management component and I didn't install it. clients that only support basic authentication. Is there a supported
solution to using SSL with load balanced WSS front end servers not using ISA
Server 2004? I hope Microsoft didn't back its customers into a corner to be
forced to use ISA.

Should be no problem. You would only start thinking about ISA if you needed
to reverse proxy access when exposing sharepoint externally.
