Moving Site Collection with SP Toolkit
I just installed the Sharepoint toolkit on our devlepment server for some
testing. I have 1 question and 1 problem. The question is, when just
selecting 'move' to move a site collection to another content database, does
the toolkit 'lock' down the site collection in the process ?
The problem I see is, I locked down a site in order to test the move process
and when viewing the admin page, the site is still listed as 'not locked'. I
even refreshed the page twice. Does anyone else see this problem ? I tested
going to the site also to make sure it was locked and sure enough, it was.
So why does it still list as 'not locked' ?

Sharepoint Portal Server 2003
Hi All,
I'm having a problem restoring a 2003 Portal site from the content
databases. We've restored three weeks of backup databases with exactly
the same problem and have tried multiple web servers and sql server

How to set multiple files properties before importing files in
Hi
I need to import a lot of Office documents in a SharePoint library,
where a few metadata is configured. I am looking for a way, or a
product, to set some custom properties for each file before importing
them in the library. All this to prevent me to having to set them one
by one for all the files.
In Windows Explorer, I can display the properties of a document, and
set a custom property in the custom tab. I need to apply the same
property to a bunch of file in the same folder before importing them
in my SharePoint library.

Sharepoint changes my value inside a SPListItem on its own!
Dear sharepoint developers,
I am facing a weird issue when updating an item in a custom list.
One filed I have in a list is of type HTML; I have some CSS classes
associated with java script that read certain HTML tags and produce a
tool tip by a mouse over;
the structure of this HTML script is XML-wise as follows:
<snippet>
<a href="#" class="tt">
keyword<div class="ttcontainer">
<span class="tooltip">
<span class="bottom">
<span class="middle">definition</span>
<span class="top"></span>
</span>
</span>
</div>
</a>
</snippet>
My List Item; let's call it 'item' gets updated in a similar way as
follows:
<snippet>
item["field_name"] = "<a href=\"#\" class=\"tt\">keyword<div class=
\"ttcontainer\"><span class=\"tooltip\"><span class=\"bottom\"><span
class=\"middle\">definition</span><span class=\"top\"></span></span></
span></div></a>";
</snippet>
During debug time and before updating, I trace the value and it's as
expected, I confirm that the saved value inside the item["field_name"]
matches exactly the one above; however, after updating:
<snippet>
item.Update();
</snippet>
The value gets changed automatically from sharepoint; my HTML code
above misses two span closing tags and the surrounding double quotes
of the classes are missing as well as follows:
<snippet>
<a href="#" class=tt>
keyword<div class=ttcontainer>
<span class=tooltip>
<span class=bottom>
<span class=middle>definition</span>
<span class=top></span>
</div>
</a>
</snippet>
Concerning the surrounding double quotes, it's not that bad, I can
live without them! but the missing span closing tags! offfff ..., I
had some rough time figuring out how it happens and I had been
reviewing my code for weeks doubting my logic and finally it seemed
that sharepoint changes it from its own!
Any idea on how to fix this? Is this a bug? do I need to pay extra
attention when dealing with fields of HTML type?
I'm puzzled!

Mirroring a shared directory in Sharepoint
I have a SBS 2003 Premium running the default "Companyweb" Sharepoint site.
I also have a 5-6gb directory of documents (in various subdirs of course) on
a shared drive.
Is it possible to have Sharepoint mirror this shared directory, so that
users can access these files from the web?
I'm thinking that there might be a 3rd party web part for it, but any input
is welcome...

MOSS Hosting
Hello All
We host a few sharepoint 2007 sites for a few clients (SPLA). The way
our setup is configured at the moment is that we configure their top
level site for them and just provide them with an access URL, they
dont get access to Central Admin. Therefore If anything is required to
be enabled on the server, for example the InfoPath forms service, they
request this via a support ticket.
We now have the requirement to provide a dedicated service to a
specific customer who wants to be able to use Central Admin. The
problem as I see it is that the dedicated service is in our hosting AD
domain and therefore they could cause problems and also probably
browse our AD (?)
Is there a way,apart from creating them in their own domain, that we
can stop them interogating our hosting AD?
What are the real risks if we let them lose with central admin on a
MOSS server in our hosting domain.
Any thoughts and advice would be most welcome.
Thanks

Sharepoint solution architecture?
Hello all:
I am a Dynamics CRM solutions architect with a little knowledge of
SharePoint, so if anyone has suggestions about the following scenario I will
greatly appreciate input. Does anyone know of any Sharepoint planning tools
such as project plans, "how-tos" for architecture, etc?
I am working with a customer who needs to manage issuing RFPs and then
responses to those RFPs. They would like to set a deadline for an RFP
response, and if someone responds to the RFP they can submit changes to
their answer any time prior to the deadline, but the customer would like to
have these changes submitted to an approval queue for them to review before
the change is actually applied to the response. The customer is thinking
they would like an intranet for managing the RFPs and responses, and then
each responder will have access to an extranet to manage their responses. We
also need to link this process to MSCRM.
So the scenario I was thinking is using MOSS to manage this process, and the
questions I have are:
1. Is MOSS a good possible solution/ Would it be possible to sue MOSS to
create a hierarchy of sites such that the overall site is accessible to the
company, and then each possible RFP responder gets an internet accessible
"sub-site" under the MOSS site? I was thinking that there would be a list
(or??) that shows open RFPs, and as soon as someone wants to respond to an
RFP they are asked some information, and then a new sub-site is created for
them.
2. To create a new RFP I was thinking of either an ASP.NET web form or an
Infopath/Forms Services form. Would either solution work?
3.That's where I am for now, can anyone make a suggestion as to whether I am
on the right track? Are there more answers I need to find out?
Thanks.

Importing user profile custom property from LDAP
Hi.
I'm trying to enable form authentication in MOSS 2007. The common part
is OK. I registered profile import connection, made full import,
extended application. It worked. Cool.
The next part. I need to import some custom properties from LDAP to
user profiles. My steps:
1) SSP Administration -> User profiles and properties -> Add profile
property:
Name: mailQuotaSize
Display Name: Mail quota size
Source data connection: Master Connection
Data source field to map: I can find there any fields from LDAP, only
AD, so I choose:
Enter field to map: mailQuotaSize (like in LDAP)
OK
2) Reimport profiles.
I can see new custom field in profiles, but no info from directory. In
all profiles new fields are empty.....
Can you help me?

Issue: I save a site as a site template. The site template is in the

Why?
Is there an option in Central Admin that could be disabled / enabled

Could it be one of the Site Features that is messed up?
I could swear that I could do it in the past but can't now.

Workflow / task lists email notifications
Q: Is there any chance that some of SharePoint's workflow email
notification processes are not properly configured WRT their
permissions?
Specifically it seems that a process that creates email task
notifications, and which needs to read info from Task lists, sometimes
does not have sufficient permission to read from certain Task Lists.
Specifically, email task notifications stop the moment I adjust a Task
list so that its tasks can't be read inappropriately by other
SharePoint
users. It seems like my adjustment (made via List Settings -> Advanced
Settings) also prevents Task list items from being read by an email
process that legitimately should have read access (regardless of my
Advanced Settings), and that email task notifications stop being
created
as a result.
==================
Example:
Go to this "Meeting Documents list:
http://bds.northbeach.bankofamerica.com/sites/MSS/Forum/BATestMtg/Document%2
0Library/Forms/AllItems.aspx
Select"Workflows" from any of its Test Documents, and start a new
workflow "Test3WF". This is an Approval workflow, with myself set as
the default approver. Add yourself to the approval list and hit
"Start". You will receive two emails; a status notification (telling
you your workflow has started), and a task notification (telling you
there is a task for you to complete).
Repeat the steps with Test4BA. You will receive the status
notification, but no task notification. The only difference between
these workflows is that Test3BA's "Read Access" lets users read "All
items", whereas Test4BA's shows "Only their own". That difference
breaks the email task notifications.
==================
More Details: I'm testing basic out-of-box Approval workflows. My goal
is to have a workflow...
(1) ...send email notifications to individuals when a task is
assigned to them, and also...
(2) ...use Tasks whose Read settings are set (via "List Settings ->
Advanced Settings") to be "Read access: ...users can read Only their
own
(items)." (Screengrab at the bottom of this email.) The intent is to
let users see their own workflow responses, but not the responses of
other people participating in the workflow. Hence users can read (and
edit) their own tasks, but cannot read other users' tasks.
However, my tests suggest those two options are mutually exclusive.
Emailed task notifications work fine, until I switch the Task list's
Advanced Settings to limit users' Read Access. Once I flip that
switch,
workflow participants stop receiving email task notifications. I can
launch and participate in workflows, but I stop receiving email.
Three other findings from my tests:
i) Aside from task notifications, SharePoint also emails (what I call)
status notifications -- status updates to the workflow originator
telling them when the workflow launches, completes, etc. This problem
only applies to email task notifications. Status notifications seem
unimpacted.
I believe status notifications originate from the Workflow list in
some
way, whereas task notifications are generated by the task list. Maybe
there's a process that wants to *Read* the task list, but is prevented
from reading that list once I restrict the list's permissions? (In (2)
above.) I'd hope a system-level process has broader permissions, but
this looks like a clean explanation for the problem, especially
since...
ii) ...since it's possible to "fix" a tasklist so that it resumes
sending email task notifications. First you have to set the list so
that anyone can read it. Then you toggle off, and then on, the email
notification switch. Just toggling "E-Mail Notification" doesn't do
it;
"Read access:" *must* be set to "(users can read) All Items" at the
moment you enable "E-mail Notification".
Any insight would be appreciated. Tag: where does the manifest.xml file go? Tag: 100198
Getting Red X Item Icon on Search Returns But Not in Document
Hi Everyone,
In MOSS 2007 Enterprise, all of my searches are returning the infamous
Red X "Item Icon" for all content types: email, xlsx, docx, etc. I've
checked permissions and I'm logged in as an administrator. It doesn't
matter which application pool or site collection I log in through, or
what I'm searching for: all returns are Red X's.
Interestingly, when I open up a document library, however, the icons
are there just fine. Thus, the issue is search dependent.
When I right-click "Properties" on the Red X icon from the searches,
it only gives me a partial address for the item: for example, a (what
should be) Word doc icon reveals http://<servername>/team/_layouts/
whereas when I'm in a document library and right-click an icon I can
see, such as the Word doc icon, I get a fuller URL:
http://<servername>/team/_layouts/images/icdocx.gif .
My deduction is that something is messing up the search's ability to
process the rest of the URL for the item icons from an XML file. But
what? Any ideas?
Thanks for any help,
Stephan

Quick launch bar missing from Sharepoint Portal Server 2003 Site
I've look under every rock, in every nook and cranny and still I can't
find how to add the quick Launch tool bar to the side of my Sharepoint
Portal site.
Admittedly I am a complete novice when it comes to Sharepoint, and so
some of the posts I've read have been a bit confusing (as is the rest
of sharepoint!).
The account I am using has full permissions to the site (reader,
contributor, web designer, content manager and member) and when I
visit the sites home page I get a menu down the left hand side, but
most of this seems to be related to maintaining the site, not part of
the site itself.
There are 2 sections ("Topics" and "Actions") and while "Topics" looks
like it might be relevant to the site seems to link elsewhere, or
provide links to do so.
The "Actions" section conatins links such as "Add Listing", "Create
Subarea", "Manage Portal Site" etc. There is a link to "Edit Page" but
when I do this there is no option to turn on the Quick Launch bar.
I've read on some pages that it is itself a webpart, so when I go to
add web parts I only get certain areas to add them to, and the left
isn't one of them. There is also no "Quick Launch" in the list anyway!
Is someone recognises my problem and has a simple set of instructions
as to what I should do to fix this, I would very much apreciate it!
Thanks

Inability to Print Microsoft Word Documents Opened from SharePoint
Hello,
A site currently running under MOSS is having an issue when users
attempt to print a Microsoft Word document opened from the SharePoint
site. This is the error received:
"You cannot print this document as it is a protected document that
must be printed from the Intranet. Go to the official Intranet and
print the document from there."
I am told that end-users have added the SharePoint site to their
"Local Intranet" zone within Internet Explorer, and that for some
documents, they do not get this error.
Has anyone else come across this error, or would anyone be able to
provide some help as to determining the root cause of the issue? I
have checked to see if IRM was to blame (see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922100),
but it seems this was not the case.
Thanks in advance,
Nathan Peters

Printing PDF's and Metadata
Is anyone aware of a product that will force metadata selection when
printing PDF's to a document library? I realize I can upload the
document and get the metadata prompt but I would like users to print
directly to the library avoiding saving the file locally. Tag: where does the manifest.xml file go? Tag: 100183
MOSS 2007 and Excel Services
Hello All,
My configuration of MOSS 2007 is 2 web plus 1 SQL (cluster)
Web1
Central Administration
Document Conversions Launcher Service
Document Conversions Load Balancer Service
Excel Calculation Services
Office SharePoint Server Search
Windows SharePoint Services Help Search
Windows SharePoint Services Incoming E-Mail
Windows SharePoint Services Web Application

Both servers are part of a Windows NLB, Multicast with the protocols TCP 80
and 443 and affinity single.
I'm using Kerberos for authentication and all spn are set to all service
accounts and urls.
I've run the following commands on both web servers:
stsadm -o set-ecssecurity -accessmodel delegation -ssp sharedservices1
stsadm -o setsharedwebserviceauthn -negotiate
stsadm -o execadmsvcjobs
I've checked %program files%\\Microsoft Office
Server\12.0\WebServices\Root\Web.Config and it contains the following:
<location path="XXXXX/ExcelCalculationServer" allowOverride="true"
inheritInChildApplications="true">

customizations to sharepoint templates

Managed Paths MOSS 2007
We are in the process of upgrading from SPS 2003/WSS 2.0 to MOSS 2007/WSS
3.0. Our SPS 2003 Portal site layout looks like:
http://portal.company.com/ root
http://portal.company.com/bd/ subsite
http://portal.company.com/hr/ subsite
http://portal.company.com/legal subsite
http://portal.company.com/operations subsite
etc
etc
After the upgrade successfully completes we end up with just the root site
and no subsites. The managed path is an explicit inclusion for the root. How
do we add a path so all 100 or so subsites that are directly in the root can
be accessed? Explicit wildcard? Will that mess up the root site? Are we
missing something?

Problems with Vista and External SharePoint 2007
We established a External SharePoint 2007 server about 4 months ago. The
server requires users to enter a username and password upon entry,
authentication is against our external domain. Currently when our internal
users on a Microsoft Office (2003 or 2007) they are prompted to entry there
username/password once more time. After that then it will not prompt again.
We have now started the migration to Vista. My internal users are now
prompted for username/password every time they request to open a document
from our external SharePoint server. In reseaching the issue we have found a
registry fix, but would have to do it for each product in the Office Suite
and really would prefer not to do this route. we have also tested it outside
and have seen where it will prompt for the username/password but then at
other times will not when open the document. If any one could provide some
suggestions as to a possible solution, the assistance would be deeply
appreciated.

Create a Hierarchy of Documents Libraries ... is it possible?
Hi all!
Is there a way to organize Documents Libraries in folders, or any
other organization scheme?
I have a situation where we need to have several document libraries in
a single site, and all show up at the same level, making it confusing
to navigate or understand the logical structure.
Thanks for your help

Problem "Open in Excel' in EWA
Hi,
I have the following problem : I have a MOSS site that is not a root site
(its URL is something like http://server/sites/portal/default.aspx). I use
Excel Web Access and the Web rendering of Excel files works fine. But I
obtain an HTTP error 500 when I try to open the file in Excel. I noticed
that MOSS tries to open the file with a wrong URL like
"http://server/_layout/..."
Is there a way to fix this wrong URL ? Or do I have to reinstall my site on
the root (please, no...) ?
Thanks,

Possible for a workflow to export a List as CSV/XLS and email it to a
Is it possible with the MOSS workflow capability to setup a workflow
(e.g. I'm thinking a weekly "job") that would simply export a specific
List to "Excel format" (e.g. CSV, XLS) and email the result to a
specific recipient?
In discussions with my team, there's serious concern about the space
consumption that comes with turning on Versioning, but I think they'd
still like to be able to look back on non-appended field content in
case some detail is needed far off in the future. If we asked our
participants to update a List twice a month, then exporting a weekly
snapshot of the List should capture 99% of the updates without ever
having to remember to manually retrieve them.
I'm pretty confident on the "weekly" part (using a date-based trigger
for the workflow), but I don't know if the "export as Excel" is
something that can be automated at the server, nor whether this could
then be tied to an "email the result" kind of action.
Any thoughts or tips would be extremely appreciated. :) Tag: where does the manifest.xml file go? Tag: 100154
