    - Error using LogParser Hi, I am having a tough time in parsing the Sharepoint's STS log file. I did a google and gound microsoft's tool LogParser but couldnt use it successfully. No matter what format I give its giving me errors ,I guess its expecting a header but the log file deosnt have one. Its throwing errors like "Cannot find #Fields directive."     - Search Service settings in Sharepoint 2007 OK, seeing as I now have my MSDN version of MOSS 2007 I've scrubbed a load of rubbish of the disks in my lab and gone for a multi-server build to see how the components will stack up in something approaching a production environment. In this instance I have a "real" SQL 2005 server and two virtual MOSS servers, one to be an Application Server and one to be a front-end web server purely to render content to the end user. The build, thus far, has gone remarkably simply but I've just hit a bit of an intellectual brick-wall while trying to configure the services on the farm. Having to start the WSS Search service on the application server purely to enable searching of help content seems a little wierd but I can live with it. The really confusing thing (or perhaps its just that I'm a bear of very little brain) seems to be the on-screen text accompanying the page to configure the Office SharePoint Server Search Service Settings. The way I had envisaged it was that in my two-server configuration I would be able to run most of the services on my Application Server (in an SSP environment) leaving the front-end web server to just render content and consume such services as were appropriate. However it doesn't look as though it works like that. At the top of the page you define whether your App server is going to index content and/or handle search queries. OK - I want mine to do both. This then brings up a number of other options further down the page. All th estuff about accounts is generic and understandable until you get to the last section about "Web Front End and Crawling" >From this it would appear that for your Application Server to act as a crawler (i.e. carry out the indexing function) it also has to be defined as a front-end web server. Err - why ? Surely the indexer creates indexes and then, if necessary, propagates its index to one of the search servers. I can't see any logic to why the indexer needs to be a front-end web server. Nonetheless this seems to be mandatory, and so moving on we are then presented with a series of conditions for making the server dedicated or not. The help text says: "Use this option to specify a dedicated web front end for crawling. Crawling through a dedicated web front end will reduce the impact of crawling on the other web front ends in the farm. If your index server is not running other shared services, it is recommended to enable the web front end role on this computer and use it as the dedicated web front end for crawling." OK - so taking those two together it seems to be saying that a dedicated web front end for crawling is a Good Thing and that in an ideal world you have one server which is working purely as an indexer and not running any other services. OK - not too far from the 2003 model (except that there the indexing server typically acted as the job server too) But... If your index server is also running the Excel Calculation service or other shared services, select no dedicated web front end for crawling. Otherwise, these services may not work as expected. So unless you have the luxury of a dedicated application server to act as an indexer then this suggests that you *must not* dedicate it, but instead (by inferrence) allow the crawling service to be shared across all your front-end web servers. But surely this completely breaks the notion of having a three-tier web / application / database architecture for MOSS 2007. If I set this up the way it seems to be suggesting, I will have the crawling/indexing service running on both my front-end web server and my application server, the search service running only on my application server, and any other applications (profiles, excel services etc) also running on the application server. It seems, somehow, counter-intuitive to force me to run the indexing service on a front-end web server which I *wanted* to just use for serving content to end users. If one was to be forced to run any applications there, wouldn't it be more logical to force the "search" rather than the "indexing" application?     - Context Menu script error We have a new SPS2003 install and all seems to be working well but we have run into a problem with one IE7 client machine. This machine will not display the context menu for editing and checking out documents but instead simply throws a script error of "Object not found." This happens for any shared documents or document workspaces but only on this machine. My initial research brought me to OWSSUPP.DLL as the ActiveX control responsible but this control is present on the troubled client and is the same version as running on some of our working clients. I followed some old instructions about re-registering this dll but RegSvr32 will not register or unregister this version. The client in question is using Office 2K7 Professional.     - SPS 2007 is not getting uninstall I have SPS 2007 install on my machine. Due to some securtiy issue i have to change the domain of my PC or else i have to sift my machine in another domain.     - Limiting access to uploaded documents Hi all. I am trying to manage documents relating to a key project using Sharepoint as the project repository and have encountered a limitation. Basically I have 3 project teams (for convenience A,B,and C) and I have set up groups A, B, and C in sharepoint, with associated document areas. Now my problem is that while I would like all the members of the teams to be able to see each others documents, i.e members of team A can see documents in repository of team B and so on, I would like only members of team A to be able to change documents relating to team A, and ditto for the members of teams B and C. In other words I need some way to tag individual documents as read-only for some sharepoint users, but read-write for others, all of this whilst keeping the documents segregated on the basis of team ownership.     - MOSS 2007: stsadm question I exported a site that has the setting "Require check out". When doing a test import to a new site, the import process failed after importing the documents. From what I can ascertain, it was trying to set all the values for the additional columns for the document type. But the doc library refused to allow it citing "the document must be checked out before the document can be edited". Can this be overridden? What a pain!     - Topology Error encountered after moving from MSDE to SQL Hello, I followed this procedure http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/winsharepointadmin/HA011608241033.aspx and found that the SharePoint Portal Server (SPS) farm topology still thinks the configuration database is located on the MSDE server. It now resides on a SQL database server. Two servers: one holds WFE, WSS, SPS and the other (SQL server) hosts the configuration & content database; I believe this is a "supported" farm configuration.     - Central administration not working after upgrading MOSS 2007 to RTM. I had a SharePoint 2007 farm (Beta2 TR) with one Application server (also WFE) and a database server. I followed all the steps exactly and upgraded this farm to RTM. The upgrade was successful (no errors in installation and configuration). But, after upgrade, the central administration site is not working. When I browse to the central administration site, I get error: "Server error in '/' Application".     - Migration MCMS 2002 to SharePoint 2007: ~LT~? I'm trying to migrate the content of an MCMS 2002 site; and I'm running into the problem that in the MCMS 2002 database some of the content is stored with ~LT~ and ~GT~ respectively for <>. Anyway, the migration does not work and the content is not formated (the tags are not recognized). I tried just to do a switch and replace of these characters before I migrated the db but this seemed to cause even more problems. Does anybody have an idea about this?     - Invoke a Web Service from InfoPath 2007 Has anyone got a code example of how to invoke a web service from code-behind the form using c#? I have it all working with InfoPath 2003 but the object model in InfoPath 2007 has had a redevelop and I now need to work out all the new objects to use to do the same thing.     - MOSS 2007 Beta 2 TR STSADM backup won't restore to MOSS 2007 RTM Before I upgraded to the MOSS2007 RTM version, I backed up my site using STSADM, luckily I also backed up my SQL databases. Once the upgrade was complete I thought I would try and restore it to a different application and see if I still had the same issues I was experiencing with B2TR. When I attempted this I got an error (see below) Command used to backup site in B2TR: stsadm.exe -o backup -url http://moss2007:38989 -filename c:\MOSSBackup\b2trbackup.dat Command used to attempt to restore site on RTM upgraded version: stsadm.exe -o restore -url http://moss2007:34040 -filename c:\MOSSBackup\b2trbackup.dat Error Received: Your backup is from a different version of Windows SharePoint Services and cannot be restored to a server running the current version. The backup file should be restored to a server with version '12.0.0.4407' or later. My current RTM Version is 12.0.0.4518 so I thought it should work... After talking with Microsoft they said that you can't use a STSADM backup from an earlier version and restore it to a newer version (they just need to fix their error message then). They only way to do this is to backup the SQL database and once the upgrade is performed, restore the database and run: STSADM -o AddContentDB -url http://xxxx.xxxx -database databasename Apparently STSADM backup/restore doesn't handle schema changes from one version to the next but by restoring the content SQL database and running AddContentDB switch it upgrades the schema at this time.     - MOSS 2007: "Add to my links" gives authentication error When I click the "Add to my links" button in the top right corner of My Site, a pop-up authentication dialog appears prompting for credentials. My credentials however, are refused when I input them. Apparently, writing the link to My Links has authentication problems. Anyone had this/ knows about this?     - MOSS 2007: "Add to my links" gives authentication error When I click the "Add to my links" button in the top right corner of My Site, a pop-up authentication dialog appears prompting for credentials. My credentials however, are refused when I input them. Apparently, writing the link to My Links has authentication problems. Anyone had this/ knows about this?     - Contributors can not fill out survey in WSS Hello, We're using WSS under SPS 2003, and after creating a survey and adding Domain Users as having Contributor access, it's not allowing anyone in the Domain Users group to submit a new response to the survey. What am I doing wrong? Under Site Settings and Users, Domain Users is in the Contributor Site Group. Under Permissions for the Survey, Contributor has View, insert, edit, delete items. This is a sub-site of another WSS site, but the permissions are setup to not be inherited from the parent, and I've setup similar sites before with no problems like this. Thanks in advance for any suggestions or ideas. I don't want to give everyone more then Contributor access as I don't want everyone adding/editing the survey or seeing everyone's responses.     - SharePoint Approval Workflow Hello Everybody, I have a question about the SharePoint approval workflow. Here is my scenario: Setup: a) I have a list which is configured with the default approval workflow. The list belogs to a site using the 'Publishing' template. b) I have an AD group, with 2 users in it, assigned as approvers. c) The same AD group is assigned as contributers to the site containing the list. Issue: A user beloging to the AD group creates a page and starts the workflow. Two issues: a) The user does not see a "Approve/Reject" option on the page. b) The worklow status of the page shows "Approved" but the task shows "In Progress" and assigned to the next person in the AD group. When I create a new site collection in MOSS2007 and I try to activate the Office SharePoint Publishing Infrastructure, I receive this error: "The trial period for this product has expired."     - WebPart work on SPS 2.0 but not with SharePoint Portal 2003 Hi, I am trying to deploy a WebPart on a "SharePoint Services 2.0" setup and also on "SharePoint Portal Server 2003" setup. I am successful in installing it correctly using a CAB file deployment on the SPS 2.0 but unsuccessful with Portal 2003. When the user tries to browse the WebPart Gallery and add it to a page, it flashes the following error message: ----------------------------------------------------------------- "A Web Part or Web Form Control on this Web Part Page cannot be displayed or imported because it is not registered on this site as safe." ----------------------------------------------------------------- The details of my installations are as follows: - My WebPart also uses an additional assembly (a.k.a. "AdditionalAssem.dll", version 1.2.3.4) - I have copied the wss_minimal.config (security policy configuration) file and customized to another policy (a.k.a. Minimal_Plus) - In the policy "Minimal_Plus", I have given "My WebPart" and "AdditionalAssem" full trust while keeping all other same as minimal. This is in <CodeGroup> tag under "FirstMatchCodeGroup". - In web.config I have switched the trust settings to apply the Minimal_Plus policy <trustLevel name="Minimal_Plus" policyFile="D:\Program ...\Minimal_Plus.config" /> <trust level="Minimal_Plus" originurl="" /> In additional to the above settings, I have used the CAB file deployment of the WebPart. The WebPart is installed using the STSADM command. The Problem is the same security settings and CAB file work on SharePoint Services 2.0 but not with SharePoint Portal 2003. SharePoint Portal thinks that it is not a safe control. My impresion is that it should also work with Portal 2003, since SPS 2.0 is a subset of Portal 2003 and portal has additional features (which should not block existing SPS 2.0 features). Am I missing some setting or security consideration ? Is SharePoint has even more tight security and need more configuration ?     - Creating a Data View in MySite of a list in Portal site: Sharepoint Designer doesnt show any lists In Sharepoint Designer, opening MySite, when using 'connect to another library' in order to connect to a collection of a website in the Portal server (which uses another port), no sharepoint collections are shown, no libararies and lists. I have tested it inside the same top level website (from Portal Server to Portal server subsite) and then all shows and is ok. No you can't. SPS2003 can be updated only to MOSS.
Be aware not to confuse SPS and WSS.
