I've resisted posting in this newsgroup, as it falls under the 'Defunct
Groups' in the left hand nav pane. Should I post here instead? Who deems
what is defunct.

???

Microsoft. (It's very difficult to get a Usenet newsgroup removed while
there are still posts to it. This is one way of cutting down on the
number of posts - not that it seems to work)

Their intention in doing that was no doubt to encourage people to move
to their new newsgroups for all SP products (.setup_and_administration;
.design_and_customization; .development_and_programming and .general).

Times change however and the present Microsoft line is to get people to
post to the *forums* (which they control and where they are constantly
improving the software behind them)

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/sharepoint

where in addition to the equivalent forums for those new newsgroups
there are also more specific ones like BDC; Workflow; InfoPath; and Search.
