Is there a way to add all the members of a security group to a site or list
in WSS sites created under SPS 2003.

I have several lists that need different groups added to them, but I keep
getting error user does not exist messages even though I have typed the
correct name for the group and group email address.

Thanks,

Paul

I guess a better question is how to format the Group correctly.

For example if I have a main enabled Global Security Group called Company
Agents and the email address is companyagents@company.com and I have several
groups or people nested in that group how do I correctly add them to a WSS
Site or list.

I have entered the email address of companyagents@company.com and when I go
to the next screen it says enter the username. I have tried entering
everything I can think of here.

1. COMPANYDOMAINNAME\companyagents
2. COMPANYDOMAINNAME\Company Agents
3. companyagents@company.com

but nothing works. Does anyone have any advice?

Thanks,

Paul

"COMPANYDOMAINNAME\Company Agents" should definitely work for you. Can you
add this group successfully in SPS area?

I can do this in SPS, but I am not able to do it in any of my WSS sites. It
seems my only option is cross site groups, which means I have to recreate
the same logical folder structure in Active Directory into my Cross-Site
groups so I can easily add people?

This doesn't seem right, but I was not able to do it in WSS sites under the
Sites area.

Is this just the way it is. This whole completely separate security model
is cool, but it can cause problems.

I am looking forward to SPS200X b/c it always seems Microsoft starts really
getting things right at about the third major release for a server
technology.
:)

I've had no problem adding domain security groups. Unfortunately, I have no
idea why you might be experiencing this problem.

I have not had problems when adding to Portal sites or areas, but I am
talking about WSS sites. Is that the case with you as well?

That's right, no problem adding domain security groups in a WSS site. I'll
see if I can find anymore info about this.

Is the portal in the same domain as the group you are trying to add? Can
you add individual users?

Re: Is there a way to add a security group to a WSS site or list by Paul

Paul
Tue Oct 19 10:47:24 CDT 2004

I can add individual users, cross-site groups, but just not global domain
security groups. I have tried several variations on the username, but I
alwasy get a return saying that the user doesn't exist.

I would love to figure this out. I have not been able to add domain
security groups to WSS sites at any of the three locations we have deployed
SPS2003 and WSS.

Thanks for your help on this Ed!

Paul

Re: Is there a way to add a security group to a WSS site or list by Paul

Hmmm, is this a bug? I went to AD and changed all my group names and
removed spaces and capitalized the first letter of each word.

Before my groups were named CompanyName Staff, and I tried all the normal
things to get it to work DOMAINNAME\CompanyName staff,
"DOMAINNAME\CompanyName staff", DOMAINNAME\CompanyNamestaff.

None worked, but when I removed the spaces, changed group name,
CompanyNameStaff for example, and then added the group with

DOMAINNAME\CompanyNameStaff everything worked, but I am a little
dissapointed in the implementation, for example the users section in a list
doesn't seem to get autopopulated using groups or nested groups?

Thanks,

Paul

I've got lots of domain security groups with names that have spaces in them
. I vaguely recall having problems once with a name that was too long.
