I was told that there was a 2GB limit on the size of the WSS database. The
information provided by MSFT never mentions anything about this. Is it
true?

The free MSDE database has a limit of 2Gb, if you use SQL server the limit
is something much greater

The WMSDE that is installed with a pure Windows SharePoint Services
installation does not have a 2GM limit.

MSDE that is installed with SharePoint Portal Server (if NOT using SQL
Server) does have that limit.
