If a user, can no longer log into sharepoint because of a lost or forgotten
password, can the password be retrieved or do they need to be sent a new
invitation to join sharepoint. Also if they need a new invitation can it be
sent to the original email or does it have to be sent to another one?
thank you

The password they use is their Windows Authentication password. This is not
managed by SharePoint. If they forget their password, then they would need
to have the password reset in Windows.

As I said, it isn't a SharePoint function. So, you would need to get onto a
Domain Controller or a machine with the "Users and Computers" MMC snap-in,
right click the user and select change password.

You could possibly use IISADMPWD to assist in reseting passwords. Check it
out and let me know if you can't find any information.
