My Site
Hello,
I installed the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Beta 2 and
then created several user accounts for testing purposes.
It is possible to log on as a different user as well as to
browse through the portal but the My Site site seems to be
always the same (it belongs to the creator of the portal).
Since I have thought that every user with permissions
superior to Reader should have an individual My Site site
I need some advice. How can I configure individual sites
for individual users?
Thanks.

Java Applet error using in Web Part
Hi,
I was trying to use Java Applet in SPS 2001 but it shows
error while displaying the web part.
I have JRE installed in SPS and also included the java
class file in the same directory where I saved the Applet
File.
Do I need to enable or install anyother thing to see the
Applet in the SPS Portal.
Note: I have no problem running the applet directly from
IIS.
If anyone tried, do let me know???

Main Company Site
I know have 7 workspaces. One for each department. I am now trying to tie
them all together. Off the top of my head i made a nice web page that has
an icon for all he workspaces that links users can click on to go to any
workspace.
The problem is now. I am tasked with viewing the announcements from each of
the workspaces on this web page. I thought about making another workspace
just to use the digital dashboard part of it to tie the workspaces together.
Can I pull the announcements from other workspaces in either one of these
scenarios or am I way off base. Any help or suggestions would be
appreciated. How is everyone else doing this.

Backup & restore won't work for me
I had a SharePoint Portal with a small number of sub-sites. I used the
Backup & Restore tool to create a backup.
I've now wiped the server, done a fresh install of all of the software and I
have a nice clean portal. I go to the Backup & Restore tool, pick the
manifest from the above backup and it is unhappy.
The SITEDBS entry is saying "Portal site existed at backup time but no
longer exists". If I select this item and click on the Edit button, it wants
me to pick an IIS virtual server and a portal URL. However, the IIS virtual
server list is empty!
Please, somebody, tell me how to get this data restored!
Thanks :-)

SEARCH / Host header names & multiple IP addresses.
Dear all
It seems that SPS2003 has a LOT of problems when trying to configure search
on a machine that uses host header names or does have multiple IP adresses
on one network card.
It almost seems impossible to get the indexing/crawling to work unless you
use a pretty "standard" one ip/no-host-header-names configuration. Which is
not very great!!
We have a handfull of customers who want to upgrade to 2003 but the
search/indexing problems hold them and us from doing so.
Does somebody from MS had a CLEAR idea or sollution for this problem? Or is
this for a quickfix.SP release? LOLZ.
Kind regards

SPS 2001 Category Webpart
Hi,
I'm using SPS 2001 English SP1 on a Win2K Server English SP3.
I click on the Category Dashboard and then choose a category , I get the
following error
message: "Script Execution Error: Malformed XML query results for category
items". Just one category throws this error, the other function properly.
I have ca. 20 categories. 2-3 of them have subcategories, one of them has
about 100 subcategories. This one throws the error.
What can I do?

SPS 2001 Login required for MS Word docs
Hi,
I'm having a SPS 2001 English SP1 running on a Win2K Server English SP 3. I
use Basic Authentication with SSL for the workspace. I have a document
library which contains different documents, .mht and .doc documents. When a
user (that have rights on the documents) tries to open a doc document, a
login box pops up (3 times), even if the user is authenticated and has
access to the
workspace and document library and documents. When the user tries to open a
.mht document, no login box appears, the document is opened. I saved the.
doc document as .mht, the login bx doesn't appear, I checked the rights of
the user, the rights that are set on the documents and document library,
everything seems okay, but the login box still pops when the user tries to
access some .doc documents. The user runs Office 2000 on the client.
Any ideeas, advices, hints?

Contributor can not delete Portal Listings
Hey all,
As a contributor an user can upoload a document, add a
listing for this document and even delete the document
from the document library. However, by going to "Manage
content -> Portal Listings", the same user can not delete
the reference to the document (listing). The error
message displayed is: "You do not have the appropriate
rights to delete listing MyDoc.doc".
I added the permission to the Contributor Site Group
to "Manage Area - Delete or edit the properties for an
area on the portal site" - but in this case the
Contributor will have an option "Change Settings" on the
left menu. Something that I don't want!
If the Contributor Site Group has the option "Delete
items from a list, documents from a document library, and
Web discussion comments in documents" checked, why can
the contributor NOT delete an item from the Portal
Listings???
Am I missing something here? Is it by design???

Same listing in multiple areas?
The Help file in SPS 2003 talks about the ability to designate that a
listing should be displayed in multiple areas. Here are the exact words
from Step 6 in the Add a Listing help:
" In the Location section, click Change location to display the listing in a
different portal area OR TO SELECT ADDITIONAL AREAS FOR THE LISTING." (I
added the emphasis)
This seams like a feature that would be very desireable. I can't see how it
is supported, though, by looking at the General tab of the edit page for a
listing. When I click on the Change Location button all I seem to be able
to do is use the Portal hierarchy browser to move the listing to another
area. I can't figure out any way to have it appear in multiple areas
without creating it again in the other areas I want it to appear in.
I am still running the Beta 2 TR of SPS 2003, so maybe this doesn't work in
it but does in the RTM. If so, I would like to know that.
Can anybody clarify this feature?

Virtual Server List Anomaly (SPS 2003)
From the SPS Central Adminstration page, I select "Configure virtual server

(columns will align when viewed with a monospaced font):
Name URL Version
Default Web Site http://quartz/ Not Installed Extend
Portal http://quartz:8080/ 6.0.2.5530
I have two portal sites on this server. The "Default Web Site" site was
created during the initial install. I created the "Portal" site later.
Both sites work fine. You can see that the version shows up as "Not
Installed" for the first site. That doesn't seem right. As a result, I can
only show the "Virtual Server Settings" page for the second site.
So one of these sites must be configured incorrectly. Which is correct, and
how can I fix it?

SPS 2003 RTM Runtime Error - WebPart
I have just upgraded 2 development SPS 2003 TR servers to RTM and built one
new live SPS 2003 RTM server from scratch. All 3 are having some bizarre
issues.
Most notable is one involving the Content Editor Web Part. I and drop the
web part onto a page, but when I try to add content to the web part IE pops
up a message saying "Cannot retrieve properties at this time." And then
another message saying "Cannot save your changes."
When I check the application event log on the SPS server I first see this
error: Windows Sharepoint Services "An error occurred during the processing
of a configuration file required to service this request. " and next is a
second error "Error: Failure in loading assembly: System.Web,
Version=1.0.5000.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a".
Like I said, this is on 3 different servers all of which seem to be working
fine.
Does anybody have a clue? Hopefully this is some security setting that is
tightened up in the RTM or something simple like that.

Customizing Default Look and Feel of site
We've got a trial version of SPS 2003 installed in our environment. We're
liking what it can do, but of course the question arises, "How can we
customize the look and feel of the site?"
For example, nice though the default header of the portal site is, how can
we customize it and put on something that is our very own? Maybe move the
links around, perhaps jazz it up a bit. In other words, make the site LOOK
like our own and not like some out of the box kind of site. Which files
would we change and how?
I've got Visual Studio.NET and would MUCH rather use that than FrontPage
2003.
Can anyone point me in the direction of some good documentation on that?

Losing Customizations
Hi
We have a server with Sharepoint 2001 on it. We recently
installed service pack 2a and since then everytime we
reboot Sharepoint (or something) is replacing many of the
files within the /Portal/Resources/ folder within
WebFolders with fresh versions. As such we are losing all
our customisations that we have placed in files such as
EditProfile.asp, spsdash.css, etc.
Has anyone experienced this problem and is there a way to
stop sharepoint refreshing the files with its own (pre-
customised) versions?
Where does it do the refresh from, can I modify those
files so that it it must do a refresh, it will use our
customised files?
Any help would be great

I have heard conflicting information regarding whether or
not SQL client licenses are required for SharePoint. I
know that you need a SQL server license to use SQL as the

need SQL CAL's? My initial thoughts are that the SQL
client licenses are not required for users since the users
are not directly accessing the SQL server. The SharePoint

Problem with WebPart and assembly
According to the description in MSDN I have created a basic WebPart, no
problems.
Now I would like to extend it. Therefore I created a DLL with a simple

While compiling I got the error, the DLL is not stong named. So I gave
it a strong name. But when I open the web page in the browser I get an
error,t he assembly is not safe. Where do I define the PublickKeyToken
for the assembly? I tried it as <SafeControl> like for the WebPart, but
it didn't work.
Next try was to use some functions from other libraries directly in the
WebPart assembly like the following:
IPEndPoint ipdest = new IPEndPoint(System.Net.Dns.Resolve
(host).AddressList[0],port);
Here I get en exception (in german):

I assume that I also wave to declare this library as safe somewher. How
must this be done? Have I to put it into the GAC?
