    - Lab setup I'm still having issues with searching areas. Originally my lab setup was using vmware. after we got the sharepoint installed we couldn't create a portal, it would stop at 49-51% showing some SQL error. SO we switched to Microsoft Virtual Server. Created everything just fine, including a portal. Created a few areas and document libraries, but could not search areas. No errors were returned. I can search sites with no problem. It's just areas. To further confuse the issue I established a keyword with a best bet to a link of a document in an area. As expected it worked fine. Is this an issue with Microsoft Virtual server and/or vmware. I believe the vmware problem was sql in nature. Not sure. Thanks, Mitch Tag: Lab setup Tag: 57409

    - Roles problem for Users in Security Groups Hi, I a sharepoint portal site to which i have added a domain Security Group to this site and all the users were able to login to the site. But when I try to get the Roles of the users, it return null thru the object model in .Net. I have a scheduled job that passes a Alias (login name) and the application must return the roles of that user. Can anyone help me how to find out the user's security groups by passing login name as parameter? If the above is not possible, i want to know how to enumerate the user's Roles (Site Groups) while running the job in Portal Site Admin user context?     - Service Account Password Change My boss told me to change the password on our server account. I go through our documented password change procedure, which almost immediately fails because it's incorrect. (i.e. change password at any desktop workstation, go to http://sharepoint/). I call the guy that changed the password last time, and he walks me through a hardcopy procedure that he has -- which is totally different. (change identity on app pool, change logon account for SP related services) Everything seemed to come up, except when I search, I get an error: "Your search encountered an error. If the problem persists, contact the portal site administrator." If I go into site settings, and pick "Configure Search and Indexing", I get the error: "The gatherer index was not initialized. The content index must be remounted. If the index is still not initialized, remove it." When I use Sharepoint Central Administration to try and change any setting, I get this error: "Error accessing database. Verify that the database server name and the instance name (if present) are correct. Also, ensure the configuration database administration account has sufficient permissions on the server or instance and the service corresponding to your SQL Server instance is running." If I go through event logs, I can see username/password errors: "The gatherer object cannot be initialized. Context: http://oxynet.oxy.com/ Application, ProfileImport Catalog Details: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password. (0x8007052e) For more information visit http://www.microsoft.com/servers/redirect/contentredirect2.asp For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp." If I look at logs (Sharepoint Central Administration > Sharepoint Portal Server > Configure Diagnostic Settings > xxxxx_SPSADMIN.LOG) I see this line, repeatedly: "04/07/05 18:14:13:578 UNK 00000000 00000C9C Exception in GetBlobFromCurrentState: System.InvalidOperationException: Cannot get virtual server configuration at Microsoft.SharePoint.Portal.Topology.PortalSite.a(a A_0)" although I don't believe that it's related. This was working fine before I changed the password. I screwed up our SharePoint Portal server farm, and I haven't been able to find any useful messages on how to fix it, although I think I've seen a couple people who had a similar problem and ended up reinstalling. Reinstalling will get me yelled at. I've been wanting to "Configure the server farm account settings", but this generates the above-mentioned "Error Accessing Database" message. I used STSADM to change the content database, username, and password but it didn't accomplish anything. (those settings were blank, so I don't think STSADM uses the "real" settings for that).     - Digital Dashboard for portal 2003 Hi, I've been doing some research on digital dashboards for sharepoint but all i can find is for sharepoint 2003.     - Team site is lost I created a team site and chose the Do not list in site directory and do not include in search results options. I want to reverse these, but can't figure out how. Also, as an administrator of the entire site, how can I see sites that other people create and hide from view.     - After first install, SearchServiceManagement.aspx errors out Did a completely pristine install - Windows Server 2003 with SP1, SQL Server 2000 with SP3, Sharepoint 2003 with SP1 and Visual Studio .NET 2003. Did Windows Update to make sure that everything was up to date. My first operation - opening "Sharepoint Central Administration" - brings up IE but it errors out with an "Internal server error" (HTTP 500) when it brings up http://localhost:12582/SPS/SearchServiceManagement.aspx There are no entries in the Event Viewer.     - What's wrong with the indexer???? Does anyone know how to fix this error so I can search content? This is sp2003 running on w2k. I am running IIS 6.0 with integrated authentication.     - The mystery of the Default MySite Quick statement of problem: Today, I logged into the SPPS server box as HollisD, browsed to the portal, click the MySite button, and a personal site for HollisD is created. All seems good. I go back to my HollisD workstation, browse to the portal, click the MySite button, and get taken to the HBeta personal MySite. All is not good. Where is this MySite vector controlled and how can it be reset to operate so that each client account gets sent to its proper personal site? See below for details. After I turned on the MySite capability of the portal, in the Admin pages, I exited the Admin pages, opened the browser, and went to the portal. This was while I was logged onto the desktop of the SPPS2003 server box as Administrator, using the domain Administrator account. Once in the portal, I clicked the MySite button, and it created a MySite with the name Administrator on the page. I exited the portal. All was well and good in the world. I then walked to my HBeta client computer, called up the browser (IE6) and browsed to the portal site, clicked MySite, and it created a MySite for HBeta. Somewhere in that process a dialog box appeared asking if I wanted to set this site as the default MySite. Not knowing what that was about, and trusting the SPPS designers to know what they were doing and wouldn't really let anything bad happen, I said yes. The site was there, I added my picture to the profile, and all was good. I walked to my other client workstation, the HollisD computer, and attempted to do the same thing. Alas, when I clicked on the MySite button, it takes me to the HBeta personal site. How is that happening? I asked in the managed MSDN newsgroup, and Wei-Dong XU had no idea. All is not good. Today, I logged into the SPPS server box as HollisD, browsed to the portal, click the MySite button, and a personal site for HollisD is created. All seems good. I go back to my HollisD workstation, browse to the portal, click the MySite button, and get taken to the HBeta personal MySite. All is not good.     - Submit to Portal Area and Grouped Listings. We are trying to create a top level area that contains all of the companies documents as contained in the multitude of document libraries within our portal structure. To do this we are using the Submit to Portal Area feature on the documents. However. When we make a change to the original document in the doc library the submitted version (who's URL is the same as the original) does not reflect the change made.     - Deleting Site Question Hi, So under SPS, I have a sub-area that holds our sub-sites that are created. When I want to delete a sub-site, do I have to go into that WSS sub-site first and delete it there and then go pack into SPS and delete it from the "Manage Sites" area? I tried deleting one by going into Manage Sites area and chosing Delete, but I can still access the subsite via the URL.     - How to initialize an object just once for entire session I have created a webpart that generates the dynamic subsites andgrats access to the users. For representing the list of users, I have used DataTable with DataGrid. Actually when ever the page is refreshed, the new instance of DataTable is created and I always loose my previous data. I want the instance to be created once for the entire session of the user. I have tried a lot and researched a lot but no use. Currently I am checking if the DataTable instance is null or not.     - Access denied on extranet server Hi all, I finally got my sharepoint portal up and running in extranet and intranet environment. + intranetserver: virtual directory A with WSS installed virtual directory B with Portal running + The extranet server also has 2 virtual directories that point to the same content as the intranetserver, but SSL with Windows integrated authentication. Users can access the intranet-part and the extranet-portal, but the extranet-WSS gives an access denied for all users but the administrators! Is there a supported solution to using SSL with load balanced WSS front end servers not using ISA Server 2004?     - Specify Configuration Database error I'm trying to get Sharepoint Server set up. I'm at the Specify Configuration Database Settings page, but I can't get past it. If I choose "Create" (which is what I should be selecting according to the install instructions) I get an "Unexpected Error" error message. I was getting a longer message, but now I'm just getting this "Unexpected" one. Any ideas as to what may be wrong?     - MultiPage Meeting Site Layout Hi, I posted this in the WSS newsgroup but didn't get an answer so I thought I would try here. We will be having multiple Mutipage Meeting subsites. Right now, when a user adds a new page the page comes in blank and they are required to add the webparts. I would like to modify the default layout of a new blank meeting tab so that default webparts are already included then they add it. In addition, I would like to change the layout from 3 columns to something else. The first request is a must-have, the second is a nice to have.     - Restore Database schema too old I am getting the following error when I tried to restore the back of the SPS sites that I had created."the database schema is too old to perform this operation in this sharepoint cluster. Please upgrade the database and try again". I have tried for two days to get this too work, without any success.     - Elevate to Production Am I correct that the best way to elevate the portal from test to production is actually backing up the portal and then restoring it on the production box? or is there a better way. Most of the changes will be to 'sub-areas' and what if we have mulitple 'jobs' in test and only want to elevate one of them? Do we need to only have one at a time in Test. Also moving from Dev to test.... I would do the same backup/ restore? Basically it comes down to is I am looking for a procedural guideline on how to manage a complete DEV/TEST/PROD environment and have production secure and only have design changes allowed by admins... not developers.     - Explorer View We are having problems with our Explorer View. It works on some of the computers and on others I get a can't display page error message or Internet Explorer freezes.     - Crawl of Sharepoint 2003 portal with SSL fails Hi, We've setup a Sharepoint 2003 portal, which works quite fine. To do so we used three new servers : One SQL server One job server (index & job) One web server (web & search) The search works fine in almost every case! For one of our customers we need to setup SSL for security purpose together with basic authentication. In this case, the search doesn't work well! We get the following error message : The address could not be found, (0x80041205 - Access is denied. Check that the Default Content Access Account in SharePoint Central Administration is correct, or follow the "Exclude and Include Content" link to add a rule to specify the proper crawling account to access this URL. ) If we don't require SSL and change include & exclude content, everything works fine! I get the symptoms as described in the KB article 827483 (cut and pasted here for clarity):- BEGIN QUOTE SYMPTOMS When you try to compile an audience, or specify an audience compilation schedule in your portal in Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003, you receive an error message that is similar to one of the following: An error occurred while setting the schedule. Please check below for details. -or- An error has occurred while accessing SQL database or system resources. If this is the first time you have seen this message, please try again later. If this problem persists, please contact your administrator. -or- The search service is unavailable or access was denied. Check that the search service is configured properly and running. Back to the top CAUSE This problem occurs if both of the following conditions exist: .The configuration database administration account information is changed. -and- .This changed account information is not updated to the portal. In this scenario, when you try to compile an audience, or create an audience schedule, you should receive the following error message instead of the error messages that are described in the "Symptoms" section of this article: Scheduler_LogonFailure_Error The user name or password is incorrect. Check the account information for the configuration database administrator account on the Configure Server Farm Account Settings page. Back to the top WORKAROUND To work around this problem, verify the credentials specified for the configuration database administration account. To do this, follow these steps: 1.Start SharePoint Central Administration. 2.Under Server Configuration, click Configure Server Farm Account Settings. 3.In the Configuration Database Administration Account area, click to select the Specify account check box. 4.Enter the user account in the Domain\username format, and then type the password in the Password and Confirm Password boxes. 5.Click OK, and then wait for the changes to be propagated to the portal. Back to the top STATUS Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. END QUOTE I tried to follow the steps outlined in the workaround, but still have the problem - can't compile an audience, and I get the same message (second variant shown in SYMPTOMS above). I note that Step 3 above refers to 'Configuration Database Administration' account, whereas the SPS page I am looking at only refers to :- 'Default Content Access Account' I have tried this using an Active Directory domain account and a local account, both of which are members of the SPS Server's local Administrators group (and should thus have full rights to change any settings for SPS, as I understand it). Can anyone shed any light on why I cannot see this setting to change it? Is it likely that something is corrupted? (I am a relative newbie to SPS, and the initial setup was done by a third party.     - Document Quotas Hello! Recently we have run into a problem with the number of documents our users are uploading into a single document library. According to the document "Capacity Planning for Windows SharePoint Services" (http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/wss/2/all/adminguide/en-us/stsb07.mspx) we should be creating sub-folders in this document library since there are well over 2000 documents in it (about 20,000) all contained in the base folder. Is there a mechanism for quotas on the number of documents in a library? I know we can create quotas based on overall size, but we are interested in quotas on numbers of documents...preferably per folder. I did not find any information on these types of quotas. The crux of the issue is that this interfering with the CommVault backups of our portal. According to CommVault, we need to fix this based on the information contained in the "Capacity Planning for Windows SharePoint Services" document.     - Help! Design tips for a Portal Knowledge Base At the company I work for, our small IT staff is running into the problem that our employees don't have a proper storage space for their documents. They complain that they have documents that are useful outside of their department and would like us to create a designated site/area for these files. This has been an ongoing problem for everyone and to solve it I would like to design a central knowledge base where we can upload, organize, and possibly discuss these docs. We're all n00bs with Sharepoint and are having issues coming up with a good design and structure for this KB. What we would like to have is a tree hierarchy (not unlike a discussion board) that's organized by topic or category. Where users can post articles, comments, start discussions, and upload/attach documents. In addition we'd like for our documents to belong to multiple categories/topics as they are applicable. For example: I have a document on HOW TO use Remote Desktop. That document could fall under the topic: Accessing a Remote Server, but also the topic: Assisting Desktop Users. If I search for "remote desktop" I want that document to show it is a "member" of those topics. Perhaps there's a way to use metadata? At this point, anything is helpful!!     - User Access Problem Hello, We have a couple of users out of hundreds who can access the SharePoint portal without a problem. But when they try to access the Team Sites (WSS) which they are members to, they get asked for a login and password and after they have entered it three times it allows them to ask for an access request. I'm still having issues with searching areas.

Originally my lab setup was using vmware. after we got the sharepoint
installed we couldn't create a portal, it would stop at 49-51% showing
some SQL error.

SO we switched to Microsoft Virtual Server. Created everything just
fine, including a portal. Created a few areas and document libraries,
but could not search areas. No errors were returned. I can search
sites with no problem. It's just areas. To further confuse the issue
I established a keyword with a best bet to a link of a document in an
area. As expected it worked fine.

Is this an issue with Microsoft Virtual server and/or vmware. I
believe the vmware problem was sql in nature. Not sure.
