I know, there have been a lot of articles on this, but haven't found the solution on this. The situation is as follows

My Portal Search works fine, no problem with that. But I also created WSS sites, under http://servername/sites/ . Now I also want to search these sites from my portal. But the sites-content is not in the search result. I haven't added the sites to the Site Directory though, is this necessary? Does this mean I need to add every new site to this Site Directory. What I have tried

- Proxy settings are ok, read something about that issue but this is fine
- When I do a full catalogue text search in SQL Server on the _Site-database I get about 600 results and 1 MB so looks good too
- I enabled WSS search results
- When I search on a WSS site within that site, I get results
- The Site Directory is something else then /sites/, how can I include this and all the subsites

I would really appreciate this, this is the last thing I have to configure before going live. Thanks!

Yes, you need to add the sites to the Sites Directory and enable them to be
crawled. Also, make sure the Default Access Account for the crawler has at
least Reader role on the WSS site.

I am having the same problem. How do I enable a site to
be crawled if yuo initially did not select this at the
site creation? I have tried adding it to the content
source but every time it runs a crawl the same sites come
up in the errors and won't be crawled for some reason.

Also what is the default access account? are you just
saying that someone must have access to the site?
Everyone is a contributor so this shouldn't be an issue
should it?

Thanks

Can you please say how exactly you add sites to the Site
Directory?

From the Home Page of the Portal -> Site Settings
Under the Search Settings and Indexed Content select "Manage crawls of Site
Directory"
This takes you to the SRMan.aspx page
Just Add Link to Site and select the "Crawl this site" from the dropdown.
If you are an Administrator this will automatically be Approved. If not,
you'll have to ask the Admin to approve it.

Hi Christopher,

Thanks a lot for your help, I have added the sites to the Site Directory now... But still no results, but that hasn't anything to do with the Site Directory I think. Every crawl that sharepoint performs in the portal stops after a while... And when I look in the gatherer log I see the error

The address could not be found, (0x80041201 - The object was not found.

A lot of people are experiencing this problem, no solution found yet. (That proxy-server article from microsoft didn't help)..

Thanks anyway, maybe you have the solution for the error above, that would be great...

Ok - well this is where I am running into problems the
site I want doesn't come up on the 'Manage crawls of
site' page and there is no option to add a site there.
How do I add a site to be crawled?

I am having the same problem as MJB - after a full
content update I get errors that the site wasn't found.

Any help would be great - thanks

Hi Ian

I didn't solve my problem with the search yet, still get an error in the gatherer log, but about you question how to add a site to be crawled, I think I have the answer

Within your portal, go to Site Settings, and then in the area Search Settings and Indexed Content choose the option 'manage crawls of Site Directory'. Then choose add link to site to add the site to be crawled (make sure 'include in search results' is checked in the next page). If you have administrator rights, your site must now show up in approved sites, which means it's being crawled (if no further errors ;)

Good luck

MJB

Hi MJB,

Thanks for the instructions. However I went to the place
you indicated and I don't have the option 'add link to
site' there. Should it be in this location? I have full
administrator rights.

Is there any other way to add the site to be crawled?
